Warwick SHS & Aranmore Catholic College Challenges

Congratulations to the Year 8 & 9 students involved in the friendly challenges. All girls played with great spirit, sportsmanship and skill. Both Year 8 teams won their games against Warwick SHS and the Year 9’s lost by a close 4 goals. Aranmore Catholic College were very strong as their Year 9 team won the Year 9 High Schools Cup. Our girls played with great integrity and it was a valuable experience for them to see the level that can be achieved at their age level. Unfortunately both teams of combined Year 8 & 9s lost o Aranmore. Thanks to all parents that supplied food for our friendly afternoon tea and also to the Yea 10 girls for coaching and umpiring. Hopefully the Year 8 & 9s will be motivated by the Year 10 girls success this year and again represent the school at the WA High Schools Cup. Mrs Cameron Inside this issue

Student Services The Year 12’s have been a great group of students. Students are reminded to finalize all requirements at school in order to participate a number of rewarding events being organized for them: Valedictory, Graduation Dinner and their last day. Year 11 students have selected their Leaver’s jumpers for next year and would like all orders to be placed ASAP. Notes will be sent home this week. The Year 11 Dinner Dance was a huge success and thanks go to the organizing committee and to the Margaret River Resort. Photos are on the S Drive. Apologies to all for the inconvenience of moving student services offices – we all look forward to the extensions being completed. A reminder to all that old or unwanted uniforms would be appreciated at Student Services in order to increase our supply of spare uniforms. Uniforms are laundered on a regular basis after being borrowed by students. Good luck to the Year 12 students in their final weeks of school.

From the Principal’s Desk We wish all staff and students an enjoyable and safe Term Three break. This has, as usual for Term Three, been an exceptionally busy 10 weeks. Year 12 students and their teachers have been gearing up for their final SWL placements and final examinations, to be held in the final week. Programs for all students are particularly intensive during this term, aiming to consolidate essential learning following the feed back of first semester exams. Also, many of the sporting and extra-curricular programs culminate during the term with state finals, in which we were very well represented, and performance activities such as the Cabaret.

When we return for Term Four our Year 12 students will have only two weeks remaining before their graduation. We take the opportunity now to congratulate them on their completion of twelve years schooling, wish them the very best in future endeavours and extend to them our fond farewells. The Valedictory ceremony will be held on the evening of October 23rd. As usual, the newsletter is brimming with events and activities that occurred during the second half of this term, all of which were enjoyable and valuable experiences for the students involved. I would however, like to make special acknowledgement of all staff and students who produced and participated in this year’s spectacular Cabaret. It was an extraordinary event of the highest calibre. In particular we would like to acknowledge the outstanding expertise and hours of hard work put in by Kara Beecham and Bel Howse. Thank you from us all for a fabulous evening’s entertainment. Well done and good luck to the coaches and students of the Margaret River SHS Surf Academy. After winning the state’s Top School Trophy for the 3rd year running all teams within the Academy will compete in the National Surf Titles in December. This Year the titles will be held here in Margaret River at the Main Break. Congratulations to all members of the Academy and particular thanks to our supportive parent group and to Scot Cameron, Belinda Anderton and John McTaggart. Mary Jane McNeil Principal

Year 9 High Ropes Course On Thursday, 11 September the Year 9 Roping class participated in an excursion to the Explorus High Ropes Course at Karridale. This day gave students an opportunity to use some of the skills developed in their lessons such as belaying and use of cave ladders. The high ropes course involves the students in groups of three (1 up on the course, 2 belaying on the ground) negotiating a series of elements between 10 to 12 metres above the ground. It is the perfect opportunity to develop trust between the students as they are relying on each other for their safety. I would like to thank Nikki Hansen and Explorus for their efforts on the day. Margaret River Senior High School 2008 Sporting Grant

If you are representing the state at a national sporting event in 2008, then you are eligible for funding to cover some of the expenses incurred. For more information see Mrs Keall in the Maths office or phone 9757 0750.

The students learnt the formal proceedings of the parliament and debated at lengths the bill on lowering the voting age to 16 years. The three Margaret River students spoke exceptionally well with Ashley introducing the bill to the Student Parliament with wit and a clever interpretation of recent Australian politics, Rose presenting a convincing private members statement and debating the bill with intelligence and conviction and Natasha arguing for the bill strongly and with enthusiasm. The students demonstrated the high quality of presentation and achievement of students at this school.

Bunbury Regional Student Parliament On Thursday September 11th, Year 10 student leaders Rose Paley, Ashley Biddulph and Natasha Rigby travelled to Bunbury to participate in the Bunbury Regional Student Parliament alongside peers from government and private South-West high schools. The students each represented a member of the West Australian government and had to prepare a speech, such as the introduction of a bill, a private members statement or an address-in-reply.

Mentoring at the High School For the past 6 years the Margaret River Senior High School Mentoring Program has been successfully supporting students to fulfil their potential through the guidance, support, advice and knowledge of its volunteer mentors.

This term and last have seen a big influx of new mentors (10 altogether!), most of whom have jumped in and are already matched with students. I am always so impressed by the community spirit of people here...There will be a Mentor Meeting in the second week back at school – Wednesday 22nd October – at the Community Resource Centre on Tunbridge Street, 9.30-11.30am. This is a great opportunity for new mentors to talk about their strategies and experiences and hear input from the older hands….which is always really appreciated!

Anyone interested in the program is also very welcome. Deb Barber, Mentoring Co-ordinator,

Year 12 Leavers Seminar On Friday,12 September the Year 12 Leavers Seminar took place at MREC (Margaret River Education Campus) for it’s fourth consecutive year. The school sponsors this day which acknowledges the value that we place on the welfare and safety of our emerging young adults as they prepare to leave school and embark on their post secondary school life. The messages presented on the day aim to provide the year 12 students with preparatory messages about staying safe during the ‘leavers week’ celebrations and beyond as they begin life after school! The program includes talks and activities presented by experts in various areas of youth health and welfare. The Red Frog Crew are the Australian Chaplains Association and provide about 200 young volunteers in WA and 2000 nationally during leavers week to stay at the venues frequented by “schoolies”. Since 1997, The Red Frog Crew (so named because of their trademark red frog lollies), have provided support to accommodation providers in helping to care for young people. The Police attended the day and were available to talk about the issues of new alcohol laws and crowd control related to schoolies week. These sessions were extremely valuable and allowed the young people to ask a lot questions on many other aspects of law as well. A major message was that the police are primarily there to look out for young people, and they were encouraged to contact police if they needed help. ASWA/Substance and Mission Australia Youth Pathways programs provided a session that used a musical and game show theme to deliver messages about drug awareness and safety. Jaye Edwards from Trinity Uniting and True colours delivered a session related to sexual health and wellbeing in a lighthearted non threatening environment. Other speakers on the day included Rance Driscoll Community Development Officer at the AMR shire to discuss the “Leavers Strategy” and accommodation provider Melissa Lay from Hamelin Bay. The opening address from Ms Mary Jane McNeil and the closing by Mr Merv MacKillop representing the school included some valuable messages for the year 12 students and indicated the value the school places on student welfare and safety. Lovely music was provided at lunch time by year 10 students Rowena Wise and Isabelle Lemon and a yummy morning tea and lunch was prepared by Amanda at MREC. The kind donations of many local businesses allowed us to distribute some fantastic door prizes to the students including two mobile phones and many vouchers. Evaluations of the day indicate that the day is enthusiastically supported by those students who attended and they have indicated some very valuable take home messages from the seminar. Good Luck with exams year 12’s and we wish you an enjoyable, happy and safe end to your high school days. NETBALL NEWS

W.A. HIGH SCHOOLS CUP GRAND FINAL

Congratulations to the Year 10 Netball Team who qualified for the High Schools Cup Grand Final. This was an excellent achievement by a great bunch of girls. They made an awesome challenge on the Grand Final Day against Nagle College from Geraldton.

Unfortunately we had a slow start in the first quarter which meant we had to play catch up for the day. With a few strategic positional changes we attacked hard in the second quarter and both teams were on an even score for the quarter. Ariana Murphy, Year 9 student, played exceptionally well when she was thrown into goal shooter due to the unfortunate absence of Ellie Williams suffering from glandular fever. This allowed Jess Cameron to move to centre and create added drive in the centre-court. Maddy Giralt and Ingrid Colyer played tirelessly to create turnovers in defence to allow our attackers the opportunity to peg the score back. Finally the girls broke through with a winning last quarter with solid court play and shooting from Sophie Noske but it wasn’t enough to come away with the win. Final score being 51-37. I would like to congratulate the girls on their never say die attitude and great sportsmanship displayed throughout the finals campaign! I would also like to acknowledge the support from all teachers at the school in relation to the absence and interruption that the finals campaign may have created. We thank Mrs Mary Jane McNeil, as principal, and the school for their financial support for our two trips to Perth. The Margaret River Netball Association also gave support with personnel and uniforms and it is fantastic that we can all work together for the better of netball in our community. Special thanks to Donna Williams, Simone Bedford, Wendy Leach, Darcy Matthews and Amy Lindsay for officiating as coaches and umpires. Tracy Cameron

A Message from Dental Health Services

Dear Parent/Guardian The Federal Government’s Medicare Teen Dental Plan commenced on the 1 July 2008. Each child, aged 12-17, in families receiving Family Tax Benefit A, Youth Allowance or Abstudy will be posted a $150 voucher each year for a ‘Preventative Dental Check’. This dental check can include all or some of the following items, depending on your child’s clinical need:

• Oral examination • X-rays • Scale and clean • Fissure sealants • Oral hygiene instruction • Topical fluoride applications

You may use these vouchers at a private or public dental clinic (including School Dental Therapy Centres). The School Dental Service will continue to provide a free service to children enrolled in Pre-primary to Year 11 (until the age of 17). Year 12’s and 17 year olds with a Health Care Card are eligible for general dental care at Government Dental Clinics. If you choose to use the voucher at a public clinic, there will be no out of pocket expense for the items listed above. Any dental treatment that is planned after the ‘Preventative Dental Check’ remains free of charge in the School Dental Service and is subsidised at a Government Dental Clinic. If you choose to use the voucher at a private dentist, there may be some out of pocket cost if the dentist does not bulk bill Medicare for the ‘Preventative Dental Check’ and any dental treatment that is planned after the ‘Preventative Dental Check’ will be at your own expense. It is important to note that if your child is not enrolled in the School Dental Service and you have sought treatment for your child at a private dentist, you are required to wait until the completion of the course of treatment before attending a public dental clinic. For further information, please contact your local public dental clinic, private dentist or Medicare on 13 20 11 or www.medicareaustralia.gov.au

Attention Parents of Year 8 Students in 2009 Immunisation Status If your child is coming to the high school next year and you have filled in their enrolment or are still submitting their enrolment, we still require a copy of their Immunisation Record for every student. Records do not transfer from primary school to high school. We need to load Immunisation Records onto the high school system for every student. If you have lost or do not have access to your child’s record please Freecall 1800 653 809 to the Medicare Australian Childhood Immunisation Register or contact your immunisation provider for a copy of your child’s record. All children born in 1996 or after should have a complete record available to age 7 from the Register. For records of school based immunisation programs e.g. Meningococcal C, Hep B, Boostrix, Gardasil and Varilix, you will need to contact the immunisation provider. This will be the Community Health Centre if done at school or the GP is done at a doctor’s surgery. Phone number for Mill Rd Community Health is 9754 0666. Please fax or post a copy of this to the high school at your earliest convenience. Fax number is 9757 2253 or postal add: MRSHS, 158 Bussell Highway, Margaret River, WA 6285. Thank you. 2008 Year 11/12 Outdoor Education Hiking Expedition

On the week of Monday, 25 August to Thursday, 28 August, twelve Year 11 and 12 students undertook the annual Upper School Outdoor Education Hiking Expedition. The expedition serves as a vital tool to complete a number of assessments ranging from observations of performance with respect to hiking, campcraft, navigation and leadership to completion of an expedition journal which shows the students’ planning as well as a record of personal experiences on expedition. The group set out from Margaret River Senior High School on Monday morning and travelled to the Pemberton Camp School for final preparations. Once kitted out with all the necessary equipment and food selections made for the next three days, some free time was given in the afternoon. Early on Tuesday morning after a hearty breakfast the group set off from the camp school on foot heading south on the Bibbulmin Track. The hike was carried out on the southern side of Pemberton, incorporating 2 campsites on the Bibbulmin Track (Warren and Schaffer). Days 1 and 2 on hike consisted of 21-22km walks between campsites (pretty long days). Day 3 was an easy 4km walk to our pick-up point. In pairs, the students took turns at leading the group over the three days, navigating and pacing. In addition, students were required to give accurate grid references at various points to show they were aware of their exact location at all point of the walk. It must be remembered that at all times students had a backpack (~15kg) on their back containing all their food, cooking equipment, clothes, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, fluids, etc. ….. everything required to survive the three days. The weather gods smiled on us with no rain late and cold but mild temperatures at night. Overall the group put in an exceptional performance, remaining positive and focussed even in times of duress. The group dynamic was fantastic. I would like to thank Mark Hudson (Principal of the Pemberton Camp School) for his assistance over the four days and organising a large component of the equipment used.

Margaret River Little AthleticsClub Registration Day - Saturday, 25 October at 9:00am

Margaret River Little Athletics Club has been reborn and will commence their season on Saturday, 25 October at the Gloucester Park Oval commencing at 9am. Before that happens a committee of dedicated parents is working very hard to get everything in place for the opening of the season. A registration day is vital as it gives us a clear indication of the numbers and ages of the competitors who wish to join. This registration day is on Wednesday, 17 September at the Margaret River Hawks clubrooms from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. You will need to bring your child’s birth certificate and $100 for the first child registered and $70 for every subsequent child. This covers all their insurance as well as equipment and administration costs. Children who’s birthdays are from October 1991 through to December 2002 are able to compete this season. We are also looking for parents willing to assist with the running of our community club. Because Little Athletics is a totally voluntary organisation, we cannot operate without the assistance of parents each week in fulfilling the many and varied duties required. These include officiating at an event; managing an age group; recording results; working in the canteen; to name just a few. Additional assistance is always required on the Centre committees and all parents are encouraged to become involved. Little Athletics is one of the few sports where parents can become fully involved in their child’s sporting interests. The athletes will learn skills in a variety of disciplines – not just running. There will be javelin, shot put, discus, high jump, long jump and triple jump as well as fun novelty events. The emphasis is on fun and learning of motor skills, so we encourage all children to have a go. Whatever your experience, don’t feel scared about putting your hand up and ‘giving it a go’. After all, isn’t that what we ask our kids to do?

Students from Margaret River SHS, Margaret River Primary School and St. Thomas Moore gearing up for the start of the athletics season.
