Group

Vickie Calderon, Director of Suffolk County Community College’s Kids’ Cottage on the Michael

J. Grant Campus in Brentwood, has been named the 2015 Director of the Year by the National

Coalition for Campus Children’s Centers (NCCCC) and will be honored by the group at its annual

conference next month in Chicago.

“Vickie is a passionate, accomplished child care advocate whose leadership has positively impacted

our students and College,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay.

Calderon was selected based upon her history of work in early education, her commitment to

excellence in teaching, and most importantly according to Pamela Pallas, Ph.D., President of the

NCCCC, “ … her leadership and positive impact on early care and education on your campus and

within your state.”

Pallas, in a letter notifying President McKay of the honor wrote, “Ms. Calderon’s nominators’

endorsements included ‘Vickie’s first priority is advocating for quality campus child care’; that she

’speaks strongly for the well-being of her staff regarding staff development and comparable benefits

and salaries’; and that her leadership has been paramount in helping to make Suffolk Kid’s Cottage

an exemplary center on Long Island and in the State of New York. In addition they noted that the

center’s reputation for quality early childhood education is one of the reasons it is utilized as a

teaching site for early childhood students.”

Calderon came to Suffolk County Community College with an impressive resume and experience.

She worked as Director of the Buffalo State College Child Care Center and later the University at

Buffalo Child Care Center. Calderon spent 12 years at Erie Community College City Campus Child

NCCCC’s Director of the Year for 2015- Vickie Calderon

NCCCC is pleased to present the NCCCC 2015 Director of the Year, Vickie Calderon.

Vickie is the Director of Suffolk County Community College’s Kids’ Cottage Children’s Learning

Center, a NAEYC accredited center in Brentwood, NY that provides full-time school-year care for

children 6 weeks through 5 years. As director, Vickie led the center through its most recent

NAEYC reaccreditation. She carefully mentors her staff, guides students, and provides a family-

friendly environment in which children can flourish.

Parents recognize her unique gifts, as evidenced by the strong letters of support. Kids’ Cottage

parent Richard Muniz, writes, “The Suffolk Kids’ Cottage at Suffolk County Community College

could not function at its current level of quality and service if Ms. Vickie Calderon were not its

director. She has always put the children first and has always gone above and beyond what was

required of her to ensure their progression and development.”

Like many of our NCCCC members, Vickie juggles multiple roles and responsibilities as she

works directly with children, staff, families, colleagues and community members, while also

pursuing a doctorate at SUNY-Buffalo. In the midst of her busy director responsibilities, Vickie is

active in the Long Island community, hosting Long Island’s Infant/Toddler Annual Conference

for the past three years. In addition, Vickie has been an Early Childhood Consultant for

Southampton School District’s Universal PreK. Due to her staff development training and

coaching, Southampton implemented an interpretation of NYS’s Common Core UPK through

everyday play.

Her position at the Suffolk Kids Cottage is her current opportunity in a distinguished career that

began over 35 years ago with her first position as a preschool teacher. Vickie’s leadership

qualities were quickly recognized, and she has served as center director at Buffalo State College

Child Care Center, Director of the University at Buffalo Child Care Center, Associate Director of

the University at Buffalo’s Early Childhood Research Center, and Director of Erie Community

College’s City Campus Child Development Center. In each setting, she has been a tireless

advocate for quality, guiding centers through NAEYC accreditation, assisting in mentoring pre-

service teachers, creating and implementing staff development and teaching a wide variety of

courses in child development and early childhood education.

In honoring Vickie as Director of the year, NCCCC proudly adds to Vickie’s long list of awards

that testify to her outstanding leadership and advocacy for young children. She has received

awards for high quality teaching, the University at Buffalo’s Milton Plesur Excellence of Award

in Teaching, as well as Erie Community College’s Joan Bozer/Minnie Gillette Leadership Award

for Empowerment of Women, the New York State Association for the Education of Young

Children’s Champion for Children Educational Leadership Award, and most recently, the State

University system of New York (SUNY)’s Early Care & Education Leaders (SEEL) as well as the

Brady Excellence Award of Administrators in 2014.

It is obvious from Vicki’s impressive resume that she exemplifies a life-long leader, committed,

passionate and secure in her role of providing guidance for each childhood program. She is fully

involved in direct care of young children as well as the larger field of early childhood education.

Jessica Essray, Associate Professor of Zayed University writes, “[Vickie] is a Champion for

Children- an Early Childhood Leader who combines her knowledge of research with over thirty

years of experience to create her endless practical knowledge of the profession. “

Vickie has made a difference not just for America’s children and parents; she is a voice for

global children. Vickie’s influence extends beyond campuses and beyond the United States, as

she traveled to Bahrain, Germany and Okinawa in order to ensure that America’s military

children receive quality early childhood care overseas. As former Treasurer of New York State’s

Association for Children Education International, Vickie raised funds to build the only girls

school in Tanzania. She presented at the Association for the Childhood Education International

(ACEI) World Summit at Washington D.C. by giving a presentation on “ The Challenges of

Filipino Childhood.” Vickie’s next goal is to share her knowledge about the importance of child

development and early childhood education in her birthplace, the Philippines. With her energy,

knowledge and enthusiasm, we have no doubt that her latest goal will soon become a reality.

As a part of the application process, Vickie shared her philosophy exemplified by a quote by Ripaldi that guides her work with young children:

“When we adults think of children, there is a simple truth which we ignore; childhood is not a

preparation for life; childhood is life. A child isn’t getting ready to live; a child is living... How

much we would teach each other…adults with the experience and children with the freshness. A

little child may not lead us, but at least we ought to discuss the trip with him; for after all, life is

his and her journey, too.”

We could certainly say that in Vickie’s own career journey, she lives this philosophy- not

“preparing for life” but living a life filled with freshness, seizing every opportunity to do good

for children and families along the way.

Please join me in welcoming this stellar champion for children, our latest addition to the

NCCCC’s proud tradition of honoring an individual who exemplifies the mission of our

organization and is the living example of the best that campus children’s program can offer --

our 2015 Director of the Year, Vickie Calderon.

By: Beth Hatcher, Ph.D. Associate Professor Early Childhood Education Chair, Division of Early childhood & Elementary Education University of Maine Farmingville

NCCCC 2015 Director of the Year Vickie Calderon

At our recent conference in Chicago, NCCCC awarded the 2015 Director of the Year to Vickie Calderon, the

Director of Suffolk County Community College’s Kids’ Cottage Children’s Learning Center, a NAEYC accredited

center in Brentwood, NY. Vickie’s center provides full-time school-year care for children 6 weeks through 5 years.

Like many of our NCCCC members, Vickie juggles multiple roles and responsibilities as she works directly with

children, staff, families, colleagues and community members. Her position at the Suffolk Kids Cottage is her current

opportunity in a distinguished career that began over 35 years ago with her first position as a preschool teacher. In

each early childhood campus setting, she has been a tireless advocate for quality, guiding centers through NAEYC

accreditation, assisting in mentoring pre-service teachers, creating and implementing staff development and teaching

a wide variety of courses in child development and early childhood education.

In her acceptance speech, Vickie spoke in glowing terms of her 26 year association with NCCCC, from her first

conference many years ago in Washington DC to her present active participation in our organization. She gave

credit to many “pioneers of this awesome organization” who served as her mentors over the years. She challenged

all of us to continue to make a difference in the lives we touch through our campus connections. “Each of us in this

room can connect bridges for the future of children by sharing each other‘s knowledge, experience, keeping abreast

with the latest research in early childhood education and by being a role model.” It is obvious from Vicki’s

impressive résumé that she is that role model, one who is committed, passionate and secure in her role of providing

guidance for each childhood program. Vickie concluded her remarks with her many thanks to her family and

friends, and especially to NCCCC. “ NCCCC- you gave me the strong roots – confidence, leadership, dream big and

hope! NCCC you are the wind beneath the wings.”

Vickie is a deserving addition to NCCCC’s proud tradition of honoring an individual who exemplifies the mission of

our organization and is the living example of the best that campus children’s program can offer – Congratulations to

our 2015 Director of the Year, Vickie Calderon.
