2020 iPad Parent Information Sessions

Thank you to all parents who attended the BYO iPad parent information sessions last week. We sincerely thank you for your time and engagement.

Please see our school website for information regarding our BYO iPad program, including the Power Point Presentation.

Father's Day Stall

All classes will have an opportunity to visit the Father's Day stall on Friday 30 August. If you would like your child to make a purchase, please ensure they bring money to school on this day and store it in a safe place. Thank you to our P&C for their time and organisation.

Qld Ready Reading Training

Last week Marian SS hosted a Qld Ready Reading training for the Pioneer Valley community. Participants worked through 2 modules covering 'Learning to Read' and 'Supporting Readers', to gain knowledge and practical skills to promote children's reading growth and development. It was a fantastic morning and we look forward to the next opportunity to host this training. Thank you to our Marian parents who attended.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $120 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Car parking

issues

A number of issues are beginning to occur due to incorrect and unauthorised use of our staff car park at the Stayts Road end of the school. This car park is for staff and not used as a pick-up and drop off point. The marked disability car parks are for parents of students with disabilities only.

Student Attendance Each semester our school receives a data profile from Education Queensland which gives an insight into our

school’s performance. As a community we should feel very proud of our attendance data over the past few years. Currently we have 42.4% of students who have an attendance rate 95% or better which is slightly down on previous years and information that we will constantly monitor. At the other end of spectrum, we have only 9.1% of students who attend less than 85% of the time. It is widely reported in current research that a student attendance rate less than 95% will have a detrimental impact on their educational outcomes. While term 3 has been a difficult one for flu and sickness, clearly a majority of our Marian families are valuing their child’s education and ensuring they get value for money by sending their child to school every day, except when they are unwell.

Marian SS Students make us proud at Stud Cattle

Events! Amelia and Juliet and their brother Cecil, proudly represented at the Pioneer Valley Show in June and the Sarina Show this August after much hard work and preparation. Placing in both shows, speaking on the mic in front of a large crowd, being stood on by a bull—it was an eventful show time. Fantastic job and they have very proud parents for simply giving it all a go!

Administering Medication at School

If your child requires staff to administer medication to your child at school, please contact the school office in the first instance to discuss your child’s requirements.

Please note, school staff will only administer medication that:

has been prescribed by a qualified health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist)

is in its original container

has an attached pharmacy label.

Office staff will ask you to complete and sign Section 1 of the Administration of medication at school record sheet.

N.B. If your child requires more than one medication, you will need to complete a form for each medication.

Asthma

If your child has asthma and requires assistance to administer their medication, it is important for you to provide the school with your child’s emergency medication and their Asthma Action Plan, completed by your doctor. An Asthma Action Plan provides specific instructions for the school to administer your child’s medication.

We recognise that some students are capable of managing their asthma without adult assistance. If you are confident that your child can confidently, competently and safely self-administer their asthma medication, let the school administration know. The school will record your decision and will not require your child’s Asthma Action Plan. Please note that if your child requires assistance in an asthma emergency, staff will provide

Asthma First Aid.

Providing medication to the school

Before you provide the school with your child’s medication, check the expiry date to ensure it is in-date and there is enough for the agreed time period. It is also a good idea to take a note of the expiry date so that you can replace the medication before it expires.

Please note, school staff will not administer medication that you can buy over-the-counter at chemists and supermarkets (e.g. paracetamol, eye drops, cough syrup) unless it has been prescribed by your child’s qualified health practitioner. For example, the school would administer paracetamol to a student only if it has been prescribed by their dentist to be taken for a short time after dental treatment.

School staff are bound by these regulations and we hope that all parents will acknowledge and cooperate with these rules.

Life Education

Life Education lessons will commence in week 9 for all children Prep – Year 6. Our C&K Kindy friends will also join in the program. Please return the permission form and make payment as soon as possible to the school collection box.

We thank you for your support with this valuable curriculum related program.

During 2018 the Student Council ran a competition to raise funds for chaplaincy. In honour of the winning grade, a plaque will be mounted near the mandarin trees. Last week, these trees were planted by the Gardening Club. Thanks for the funds raised and thanks to Mr. O’Riely for his help in digging the holes.

The Gardening Club are growing tomatoes, capsicum, oregano, celery, strawberries, corn and eggplant. Students are waiting for the harvest when they will make their own pizzas.

Thought for the week: Last Friday, Prep teacher Mrs Seierup wore a t-shirt saying BE KIND on it. That sums up the thought for the week.

Chappy News

Last week Qld Cricket visited the school and had

some games with our students. Thank you to Beau

from Qld Cricket and CUA (Qld Cricket mascot).

Yr 2 Materials Recovery Facility excursion

On Thursday, 22 August and Friday, 23 August the Year 2 students visited the Mackay Recycle Centre. From the moment we arrived, we were amazed at how the materi-als in our recycle bins are sorted and re-used. We saw the recycle materials go onto a conveyor belt and learned that a computer is used to sort the different kinds of plastic. A huge puff of compressed air is then used to send the plastics into the correct sorting bin. We also learned that we can attach a magnet to steel, but not aluminium and saw the giant magnet pick up steel items to sort them from the aluminium. While we were at there, we also learned that there are many ways to conserve our water use at home. We finished our day with a picnic in the park before

walking back to school

Lost Property We have a lot of lost clothing in the lost property

basket with NO NAMES. If not collected by this

Friday they will be donated to charity eg see
