President’s Corner

Hey Marina Key Clubbers!Summer is FINALLY here and I know you all want to take a break from responsibility and enjoy your time away from school, but just remember that you can still have fun while doing SERVICE! We have many events planned for these next two months, including the annual 4th of July Pancake Breakfast, a beach clean-up with KIWIN’S, a bonfire social, and more! Be sure to check your e-mail, our Facebook page, and/or our newly implemented text system for reminders on how YOU can make a difference in our community! This past month, our club participated in three service events: Relay for Life of Huntington Beach, the OC VisionWalk, and the OC Liver Life Walk. I would like to take a moment to thank all of those who came out to support such great causes. The event coordinator at the OC Liver Life Walk repeatedly thanked us for all of our hard work and dedication and the people of Sunburst Oranges even plan to send us thank-you gifts! Moments like these, where event coordinators personally acknowledge our club’s work, make me realize how lucky I am to be a part of this organization. I hope that by coming to our summer events, you will find yourself becoming passionate about community service too!

Past Events

Relay for LifeFrom June 7, 2014 to June 8, 2014 Key Clubbers

participated in the event Relay for Life. During the event, students got to walk around in laps to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Some students from other schools had camped out and pitched up some tents to stay overnight while others stayed for just a few hours. There were three main points throughout the two days and it was the Survivors Lap, Luminaria Ceremony, and Fight Back Ceremony. It was nice to see students participate and mingle with other fellow Key Clubbers from different schools. The fact that they were having an amazing time was great too! There was also a DCM on the first day of the event and although less Key Clubbers were present, it still ended well. Relay for Life was an event that allowed key Clubbers to spend some time to get know each other better as well as raise money for a good cause!

OC Vision Walk

Vision WalkDuring the month of June, our club participated in the 9th annual Orange County Vision Walk at Angel’s Stadium. Alongside KIWIN’s, our goal was to help Foundation Fighting Blindness find cures and treatments for blinding retinal diseases. We got to do such a wide variety of tasks that included cheering on walkers, helping set up snack tables for the participants, cooking breakfast for the walkers, and cleaning up afterwards. It was truly a blast getting to volunteer for such a great cause and simply help out.

Liver Life Walk Liver Life Walk

The Liver Walk was on June 21, and Marina Key Club and KIWIN’s helped set up for the event. We put up booths with children's games or informational brochures about liver health and diseases. Some volunteers walked the course and put up signs while others helped at the breakfast table. Once the Walk began volunteers would cheer the participators on, along the course. It was a fun event that I enjoyed and I got to meet new members from Key Club and KIWIN’s!

Division UpdatesICON 2014The 71st International Convention will be hosted in Anaheim! It is a fun-filled time from July 2nd-July 6th and meet Key Clubbers from around the world! How does spending 4 days with international Key Clubbers sound? AMAZING! If you are unable to attend, don’t worry, there is still Fall Rally 2014 and DCON 2015. Don’t miss out!

BEACH BOOMBA/DCMDivision 4 West will be attending Beach Boomba in the month of July, a region-wide event that is an amazing inter-social with fellow key clubbers! Beach Boomba will be held at Huntington Beach, so don’t forget to bring your friends. Also, the division is looking for chaperones, to advise the many kids during this event. They do not have to stay the time, so if you have any chaperone over 25, that would be great!
