ABB drives – highly reliable, energy and cost effi cient

Frequency converters are primarily used to adjust the speed and/or torque of AC motors. AC drives replace many traditional techniques for controlling individual machines or processes used throughout the vessel.

For over 30 years ABB has been supplying frequency converters to the marine industry. Certifi ed to the major international classifi cation standards, our AC drives are available for application with induction and permanent magnet motors. Today, AC drives are widely used in main propulsion, steering, winches, pumps, fans, and many other onboard systems.

The benefi ts of frequency converters are widely acknowledged. The benefi ts such as smooth control, energy savings and soft start are being applied to applications controlled by frequency converters. The increased effi ciency, reliability and serviceability in a compact physical size have increased the demand for AC drives. Modern AC drives provide high system functionality and integrity, giving long term benefi ts.

Products

ABB industrial drives - regenerative drives, 5.5 to 2500 kW

The ultra compact regenerative drives are well suited for all demanding applications where high-power electrical braking is needed, such as in crane and winch applications.

The regenerative drive utilizes unique DTC control, providing advanced performance and reliability in both motoring and generating modes at sea.

Energy effi ciency

Signifi cant energy savings as braking energy is returned back to the electrical supply network, rather than wasted as heat as with traditional braking.

Uninterrupted performance

Thanks to DTC, the transition from motoring to braking (generating) is very fast. Fast torque changes, dynamic braking and superior speed and torque control are all possible. The active supply unit and DTC can lower the risk of blown fuses or other component damage caused by voltage drops in the network.

Boosted motor voltage

An active supply unit allows the motor output voltage to be boosted, to guarantee full motor voltage even when the supply voltage is below nominal. This helps in motor selection, as network fl uctuations need not be considered.

Network friendly

Extremely low harmonic emissions. This improves the performance of the ship even further. Furthermore, a standard distribution transformer can be used.

multi-pulse transformer, fi lters or other additional equipment for harmonics reduction. This results in better harmonic performance compared with 12-pulse or 18-pulse solutions.

Low harmonic distortion emissions

Eliminates low- and high- order harmonics resulting in exceptionally low harmonic content in the network. With total current distortion reduced to less than 5.0 %, the drives meet the requirements of marine rules and also harmonic standards such as IEEE519 and G5/4.

Products

Reduced need for reactive power compensation

The power factor can be controlled by the supply unit software. It can be unity or controlled to compensate for the reactive power.

Complete package

No dedicated multi-pulse transformer or external fi lter is needed, thereby simplifying cabling arrangements and reducing the fl oor space required.

ABB industrial drives - liquid-cooled single drives, 200 to 5600 kW, multidrives and multidrive modules, 1.1 to 5600 kW

The liquid-cooled drives offer robust design for high power applications. The compact size with totally enclosed cabinet is optimized for harsh conditions.

Advanced liquid cooling

This drive utilizes direct liquid cooling which makes the converter extremely compact and silent. Liquid cooling reduces the need for high-power fi ltered air-cooling in the installation rooms. Along with the high effi ciency, direct liquid cooling offers low noise and easy heat transfer without air fi ltering.

Customer specifi c design

The modular hardware design and advanced software features of the liquid-cooled single drive enable the most sophisticated drive solutions for both induction and permanent magnet motors. Our customized solutions provide the optimum customer benefi ts.

Intelligence and high availability

The drive has a number of unique features/benefi ts as standard: Inbuilt redundancy through parallel-connected modules - each module is a complete three-phase inverter; Ability to run with partial load even when one of the modules is not operating - enabling higher drive availability and greater process uptime.

The liquid-cooled drive is available in both single and multidrive confi guration, with extensive hard-ware and software solutions.

Products

The multidrives utilize a unique modular design structure and together with extensive adaptation and engineering capabilities these drives are suitable for all versatile marine systems.

ABB industrial drives - multidrives, 1.1 to 5600 kW

The multidrive drive, either air- or water-cooled, with different supply unit confi gurations is a natural choice for cargo systems, drilling systems with many motors, and other applications.

Lower costs and space savings

The common DC busbar means less cabling, reduced installation and maintenance costs, reduced line currents, simpler braking arrangements, reduced component count, increased reliability and space saving.

Greater powers

The modules can be freely connected in parallel for higher output current. This reduces the number of different module sizes and means fewer spare parts.

Quick assembly

The modules have a plug-in connector, making assembly easy and fast. The high power modules are fi tted with wheels which allow fast removal for maintenance. Small modules are tilted inside the drive cabinet to save space.

Less downtime

Inbuilt redundancy through parallel- connected modules. Each module is a complete three-phase inverter, which enables running with partial load if one module fails.
