Atkins offers geophysical services to governments and industry for a variety of marine applications including offshore energy development, environmental restoration, dredging, ecological studies, post-hurricane assessments, and marine archeology.

Specialized teams provide shallow-water surveys of rivers, lakes, reservoirs, harbors, estuaries, and the offshore continental shelf. Survey instrumentation includes echo sounders, magnetometers, sonars, sub-bottom profilers,

water level gauges, sound velocity meters, motion sensors, gyroscopes, USBL acoustic positioning, remotely operated vehicles (ROV), GPS receivers, and navigation software.

Relevant projects Houston-Galveston Navigation Barge Lanes Project, Galveston, Chambers, and Harris Counties, TX. Atkins conducted marine geophysical surveys for the USACE preceding construction of barge passing lanes adjacent 15 miles of the Houston Ship Channel in Galveston Bay. A major survey objective was to map oyster habitat within the dredging footprint. Atkins’ survey identified 54 acres of oyster habitat that would be impacted by dredging. Additional surveys were conducted in areas considered suitable for building new oyster reefs to mitigate the loss of reef acreage due to construction. Atkins also conducted subsurface sediment investigations of each proposed mitigation reef to determine the weight-bearing capacity of soils. The survey identified areas suitable for construction of mitigation reefs that would not affect existing oyster reefs, pipelines, or archeological sites.

Goose Point/Point Platte Marsh Creation Project (PO-33), St. Tammany Parish, LA. This project is an ecosystem restoration effort constructed under the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act. The project will create 440 acres of marsh within the boundaries

of the Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge and the St. Tammany State Wildlife Refuge using material dredged from Lake Pontchartrain. Atkins conducted a geophysical survey for the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources to identify sediment borrow areas suitable for constructing marsh ponds. The survey acquired geophysical data for 6,900 acres of Lake Pontchartrain utilizing a magnetometer, recording fathometer, CHIRP sub-bottom profiler, and side-scan sonar.
