    Accidents

    Overview of Accidents and Casualties (Tables 1and 8)

    I. In 2009, 390 marine accidents were reported to the TSB, down from the 2008 total of 20 and

    the 200!2008 a"era#e of $$. O"er the past %0 &ears, nearl& 90' of marine accidents ha"e (een

    shippin# accidents, while the remainder were accidents a(oard ship )see *ppendi+ B ! e-nitions.

    Shippin# accidents reached a 3/&ear low of 338 in 2009, a $' decrease from the 2008 total

    of 3$% and an %8' decrease from the 200!2008 a"era#e of %3. Statistical anal&sis usin# linear

    re#ression indicates that there has (een a si#ni-cant downward trend%in the num(er of shippin#

    accidents since 2000 )p10.0% )i#ure %. In 2009, there were /2 accidents a(oard ship, down from

    /9 in 2008 and down from the 200!2008 a"era#e of /3. The maorit& of accidents a(oard ship

    occurred on -shin# "essels )34' and car#o5(ul6 carrier5OBO2"essels )29'.

    II. 7ursuant to mandator& reportin# reuirements, 228 marine incidents were reported to the TSB in

    2009, down from the 2008 total of 28 and the 2002008 a"era#e of 233. The maorit& of

    reporta(le incidents consisted of en#ine5rudder5propeller failures. The estern re#ion had the

    maorit& of closeuarters situations )92' and en#ine5rudder5propeller incidents )/$'.

    In 2009, incidents in the estern re#ion represented 9' of all marine incidents. The

    proportion of marine incidents in other re#ions was as follows: ;aurentian 2%',
