Summary of Findings
As you completed this self-study section of the program review, what areas "stand out" in your program? Please explain.
Interesting to look at the program statistics and talk about issues which may have caused change from year to the next.
What has surprised you? Please explain. The surprise was we had 45% retention one year. The reason for occurring once discussing with our program team was the fact that we enrolled zero students (intentionally) to finish the two year program.
List two or three of the items identified through your self-study that you will focus on to make improvements to your program.
Need to market Wisconsin specific areas for MRT – Green Bay, Oshkosh, and Appleton.
When/where in your program will you implement these improvements?
Improvements would be implemented over the next two years.
What methods (direct or indirect) will you use to assess the success of this implementation?
Completed or not completed - this is a direct measurement.
Access campaign and market as potential students log on.
Three Facebook ads targeting Wisconsin, age 17 or older males from Green Bay, Oshkosh and Appleton area (example: 170, 630 hits).
“Click through” rates will be assessed - .024%. National average is .015%. Marketing cost$1.59 per exposure.
Monthly cost of $270.
What new outcomes or benchmarks do you hope to achieve through these recommended changes?

Category: Program Statistics
PLUSES (Strengths) DELTAS (Opportunities)
Retention, headcount and graduate satisfaction. Graduates employed in related field.
45% retention in one year.
Select one PLUS item and explain the root cause:
Retention – Overall retention has been very good in the program. Great instruction, equipment, cost of the program and moving to a three semester format could all account for retention.
Select one DELTA item and explain the root cause:
45% retention one year – The cause of this number was we did not allow enrollments in the spring semester in order to finish up the two year program before implementing the new 3 semester program.
Overall employed related of 0% in 2008-2009. The root cause of this score could be that the graduate response of surveys was zero from this group.
What items in this category MUST be addressed on our improvement plan?
Make surveys worthwhile to return because many Marine grads are not local and this must be known when sending out follow up surveys.
Integrate Facebook page reminders; these Facebook pages will be reminders for students to complete the graduate survey form.
What items in this category MIGHT be addressed on the improvement plan?
Spring enrollment numbers must be closely monitored to ensure combined capacity meets Marine Lab capacity.
What items in this category may be considered a BEST PRACTICE OR INNOVATION?
Headcount and graduate satisfaction.
Students are happy with the education they received.

TSA – We want to develop a skills assessment to meet the needs of the marginal students.
There are not enough hours in the curriculum to teach semester two and we want to add three credits of core curriculum to this semester.
Select one PLUS item and explain the root cause:
All items from past program improvement plan have been implemented.
Curriculum is based on performance task with a checklist. The root cause is the direction towards performance based curriculum.

College-wide outcomes are being addressed (communication and mathematics) and we are a pilot
project in Marine Repair. Much of the assessment depends on when the students actually started
(spring/fall) within the program. This assessment is done during the final semester the student is
attending the program. Critical thinking is assessed during the lab troubleshooting projects.

Description for Potential Solution/Action: (Write a few sentences to describe what potential solution/action your team may undertake to improve the performance of this indicator.)
We found it best to keep retention and enrollments constant with adjusting students’ enrollment doing January/Spring semester. Adjustments may vary depending on fall enrollments.
Rationale for Potential Solution/Action: (Write a few sentences to explain why this action is likely to improve the situation along with any concerns the team may have about pursuing this action.)
We have been practicing enrollment adjustments for two years now. We look at total students within the program and amount of graduating students and those students who will be competing their last semester. Spring adjustments are made in accordance to all of these values. This has also improved attention and retention.

Update: (A mid-year and year-end update will be required each year during implementation.) May 2013 Have met with marketing group to develop an annual marketing plan. Research will be done over the next few months on power boat racing and fish tournament sponsorship. January 2014 Marketing plan was not received. Will schedule a meeting during the spring semester to set an annual marketing plan. Monitoring of adjustments needed for enrollments continues. Antique Outboard Motor Club had the National meet in August. Tim Edwards setup a booth at the event to promote Marine Repair. Power Boat Racing Association was not receptive to promotions. They wanted WITC to attend all meets. Fishing tournaments were too expensive for promotion of the program. May 2014 The marketing plan has been developed in May of 2014. The program will join the Wisconsin Marina Association to increase exposure across the state. The program webpage needs updating. January 2015 Marketing: New commercial was created and is in rotation with other college commercials. Photo shoot was completed & photos are being used in promotions. Some of the website has been updated. A page that still needs improvement is 1) Real Experience: Pictures are 15 years old.
