Project Management Cortland has the knowledge, supervisory skills and experience to create and project manage the installation of complete system solutions and undertake long term preventative and routine maintenance of the installed systems.

Marine Systems Cortland has a proven track record of providing independent engineering services for the design, analysis and verification of storm and cyclone rated systems, and can provide the same quality of service to temporary and operational moorings. Our team of naval architects are approved mooring designers at a number of ports around Australia. This allows us to design moorings for these ports, to verify an existing mooring for a specific vessel and to sign off on mooring condition reports.

By combining analysis know-how with extensive installation and mooring management experience, Cortland’s engineers design workable solutions for safe installation and reduced through-life cost.

Cortland has a proven track record of providing independent engineering services for the marine industry.

Marine Heavy Lift Cortland’s team of engineers utilise their knowledge of codes and standards and experience in vessel motions analysis to provide marine heavy lifting expertise. These services can be provided independently or as a whole package including heavy lift equipment supply and supervision of the lift. Cortland can derive the design in accordance with offshore standards using either conservative hand calculations or by computer aided simulation of vessel motions.

Rigging Auditing Services Cortland can provide independent, third party rigging audits for vessels. Our qualified Australian riggers and engineers are available to attend your vessel in Australia or overseas to provide a comprehensive, professional service to ensure your compliance with Australian and project standards.

Rope Configurations Cortland offers rope in various configurations: hard eye, soft eye, grommet, eye/eye, to provide safe and reliable performance. The choice of which configuration is appropriate to the application is the decision by the end-user designated person of responsibility, typically an engineer.

Free Area

Single leg eye-and-eye sling

• Recommended D:d ratio of eye size is 3:1 however can be reduced subject to application

• Tapered area from the “base” of the eye splice to the end of last tuck reduces from approximately 1.5 times the original rope O.D. to the nominal size

• Area or clear span between the bases of tapered tuck splices is recommended (see Rope Sling Manual for details)

• Cortland’s approved eye splice is the Moran 5/4/3 tuck splice

• MBL rating of eye-and-eye Plasma® rope sling includes splice and does not require further reduction in a vertical pull

Endless grommet sling with end-to-end splice

• Typical endless grommet rope sling has one end-to-end splice on one side only

• Eyes are typically formed by lashings. Plasma® endless grommets can be lashed together in selected areas (e.g. every 2M) for ease of rigging/handling

• Size of the middle of the end-to-end splice is typically 1.5 times the single leg O.D.

• Cortland approved end-to-end splice is Moran 5/4/3 tuck splice

Chafe ProtectionIf extra protection from the elements (heat, etc.), cutting and abrasion (rubbing against rough surfaces or sharp edges), or ingress of dirt, mud or particulate is needed, Cortland offers several chafe gear options, which range in protective quality, weight and price. Rope can be completely covered with gear (eyes and body), or simply protected in critical areas: e.g., the bottom of an eye.

SX Chafe Sleeve - combining the lightweight, non-water-absorbing properties of HMPE fibre in a tightly braided cover sleeve, SX offer the best cut and abrasion resistance of all chafe gear. SX has a high visibility polyurethane coating. Primary usage is in eye termination protection and can be seized or spliced into the 12x12 construction.

NXT Chafe Sleeve - A tightly braided nylon chafe sleeve with proprietary heavy marine polyurethane coating for use in extreme chafe applications. Excellent choice for eye termination or selected area body placement; braid-spliced or seized in place.

Spectra-lite Chafe Sleeve - Cortland’s Spectra-lite chafe sleeve is a tightly woven HMPE fibre fabric material. Available in a sewn tube or in a tubular sleeve with a hook and loop fastening system, this sleeve can fit over eye termination, or be placed on the rope body for extra protection against cutting and abrasion. Cortland’s Spectra-lite will not absorb water, is “thinwalled” and very lightweight.

Cordura® woven tubular covers - The most common type of inexpensive rope covering offered, Cordura sleeves can be ordered in sewn tubular form to slip over the rope, or with hook and loop attachments that can be unfastened to inspect the rope underneath.

Plasma® 12x12 rope sling with fabricated Cordura sleeve to encase entire sling.

SX chafe gear on eyes - Plasma® 12x12 slings with spliced eyes covered with SX chafe gear available in a range of high visibility colours.

Floatation CollarsFloatation for large diameter ropes is a necessity for preventing hawsers made out of Nylon and Polyester from sinking. From FPSO SPM Moorings to Cyclone Moorings floatation is essential to keep the lines from complete immersion which can result in entanglement on submerged equipment causing damage or parting the line. Hawser floatation gives the line better visibility for inspection and position in and around floating structures. Retrieval is also aided by the use of floatation on large hawsers.

Cortland makes its own floatation to suit lines from 50-120mm diameter and can produce custom floatation on demand. Manufactured in line with accepted industry practices Cortland floatation collars are widely used in Australia and the region for Cyclone Mooring Hawsers.
