Volume 18 Number 1 September 1, 2016

Meetings Steve McLaughlin, Sound & Sea Technology Program Manager and local Homeland Security incident

Instructor, provided an entertaining but somewhat frightful picture of various earthquake fault lines in the

Seattle area. Steve teaches emergency and crisis management training to first responders, officials and

public safety personnel. The State of Washington is second only to Alaska for a potential earthquake and

depending on which major fault becomes active, the Washington’s coastline could be seriously impacted.

His message was clear: locally prepare for and respond to disasters because it could be days or weeks

before federal assistance arrives.

Sue & Bill Horning couldn’t attend the spring luncheon since they were on another cruise. “This was

our 7th transatlantic cruise and our 49th cruise. We have sailed through the Panama Canal four times and

want to go one more time through the new portion, hopefully, next year. We have sailed all over the

world since 2001 and have been on all of the continents! Cruising has become our way of traveling

because it is the easiest way to go! We usually go on two or three cruises every year. This year we will

be on five cruises!

Bill has had many health issues since he was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2003. He almost died in

2009 when he had sepsis after having a perforated bowel. He was in a coma for four weeks and when he

awakened he couldn't walk or even write his name. He has regained most everything except for parts of

his memory. I feel very blessed to still have him with me. We celebrated our 56th wedding anniversary

last month and expect to celebrate our 60th in 2020!

Bill loved working at Honeywell and we both love living over here on Hood Canal. We had our home

built in 2000 and it overlooks the Canal. While standing on our deck we can see Mt. Rainier and the

Canal and if you turn your head to the left we have a wonderful view of the Olympic Mountains. Life is

good!”

John Billings reports that “his wife, Luanne, has had breast cancer surgery. The surgery was successful;

she also recovered from a serious brain injury.”

Chuck Preble writes: “Rosalie and I took a long train ride to LA. Visited with Grant and Susan Skelton,

then across the south west to Texas to visit relatives. Drove my first 3 level freeway intersections (4 in

Austin, 6 in Houston). They are trying to pave over Texas with concrete. Anyway, the wild flowers were

in bloom when we got off the freeways.”

Ken Mohn says “he really looks forward to the newsletter and what’s going on within the old Honeywell

group. They were out of town for the spring luncheon. Jaci and Ken are celebrated 60 years of marriage

on 7 April 2016. We are blessed with 26 grandchildren all living in Seattle within 15 miles of our home

(same house for 46 years) in Shoreline. We have one great grandchild and two more on the way. God

Bless! Fondly, Ken.”

Richard Stockman reports “that he’s still up and around! Married Janet on Nov 3, 2014 and moved to

Victoria, BC. I have applied for permanent residency in Canada but will never give up my US citizenship

and passport. Janet and I purchased a townhouse and are enjoying local activities and some cruise travel.

Best to all the MSEA’-ers.”

Terry & Lin Corcoran have been traveling a lot this summer. “Visited their daughter, Katie (professor

at WVU) in Morgantown, WV. Played in 65+tennis sectionals in Beaverton, OR. Attended ND reunion

at Lake Almanor, CA and 55th High School reunion in Bozeman, Mt. Time to rest!”

Carol Canfield writes: “She missed the spring luncheon due to a trip to Vancouver BC to see opera

Evita. Her daughter, Carolyn, is a violinist in the Vancouver Opera Orchestra.”

Dan Witmer writes: “He’s played clarinet and saxophone in several Dixieland and swing era dance

bands.”

Passages Richard (Dick) Fieting passed away due to Parkinson's disease on March 8, 2016, at the age of 79. He

was born in Stevens Point, Wis.; graduated from the University of Washington and Purdue. He retired

from Honeywell in 2001. Dick is survived by his partner, Kay Wolfe. Dick loved to ride his bike right

up until a year and a half ago before his death. “Dick was the most wonderful, loving partner anyone

could ask for. He gave me the best 26 years of my life.”
