I’m sure some of you were concerned abouttheshark.Wellresteasy,weletitgo.Leopardsharks have a pungent flavor and the preparation ismoretroublethanit’sworth.
This month we’re gonna take to the dinghyandbroadenourrange tocover thenearshorefishing opportunities. Now you may remember a few months back I wrote about all aspectsof dinghies and outboards, so I’m not gonna
belaborthepointbeyondafewsafetytips.
1.Checktheweather.Windandseaconditionscan turn your pleasant fishing trip ugly fast.
2.Bring life jackets, oars, anchor and awaterproofVHFradio.
3.Don’tgobeyondtherangeofyourequipmentor your experience. Like Dirty Harry said,“A man’s got to know his limitations.” Or,likeCaptainRickysays,“Oneofthekeystoa successful day of fishing is surviving it.”
If you’re fishing in an inflatable, especially one with a high pressure floor consider what will happen when a toothy, spine covered fish starts thrashingaroundinthething.Acoupleofyearsback, Hayden (the leopard shark boy) and Iwere fishing off Emerald Bay in my brand-new $4,000 dollar Avon with an inflatable floor. I hadbroughtacoupleofoldbeachtowelsalong-Figuring,“Ah,that’lltakecareofit”.Well,hehooked his first bull calico. I netted it for him
and swung it onto the towel covered inflatable floor. Well, when the inflatable floor was through bein’ inflated and I was through cussin’, everyone within a quarter mile had learned avaluablelesson-beachtowelsdonotstopheavyfin spines. Now we put one of those thick, long pool pads over the floor. It fits great, is soft on the feet and prevents me from foaming at themouth. A five-gallon bucket also works well for most fish, but not for really big’uns. But, don’t forget to keep hooks, gaffs and fish away from thehull.
Another thing to remember, dinghies aregenerallycrampedsodon’ttakemoreequipmentthanyou’llneed.Ifyouhavealargetackleboxleaveitontheboatandjusttakeasmallplasticboxofessentials. Ifyou’re seriousaboutyourfishing bring a gaff or net.
Probably the most versatile baits for dinghyfishing are the various “swim baits”. Colors and stylesvary.Weusuallyuse.5-1ozjigheadsandtryanassortmentofcolorsuntilwestartseein’

When inshore fishing, structure is pretty easy to find. I think the best spots are those that are in tight andhard for the commercial sportfishermen to get into. These large commercial sportfishing boats really take a heavy toll on the fish populations and it makes sense to try and fish in area that they can’t easily fish.
A word about the commercial sport fishing boats; therearetoomanyofthemandtheDepartmentofFishandGamehasraisedthebaglimitsonhalibut, white sea bass and yellowtail. I canonlyguesswhyFishandGameraisedthelimitson these fish. The backlash of these reduced fish stocks may result in more areas closed to fishing, which, I believe, is the end game for the eco-bureaucrats. I think sport fishermen are playingrightintotheirhands.I’mjustsayin’...
The easiest way for the beginner to fish the near shoreareasistosimplytrollalongtheedgesofkelpbeds.Useafour-inchswimbaitona.5oncehead and troll as close as you can to the kelpwithout getting hung up. Nice calicos, bonitaandtheoccasionalyellowtailcanbecaughtlikethisanditgivesyoutheopportunitytodiscover“boiler rocks” - deep crevices and underwaterstructure as you slowly troll by. Take note ofthese spots and return later to cast into theseareasand“work”yourbaitsaroundandinthem. At first you will lose a lot of tackle, however soonyou’recastingwill improveandyouwillbegin catching more fish and losing fewer lures. Beawareofthewavesandsurgeanddon’tgetintoocloseinthewrongconditions.
Another good method is troll or drift throughshallow,sandyareasandletyourswimbaitbumpalongthebottom.Halibutandsandbassareyourtargetshereandbotharetasty.Remember,don’tgetintoocloseandwatchyourprop.
Ifyouhearthatwhiteseabassoryellowtailarearoundandyourdinghy, experienceandtackleareup to it - go for it. If “whites” are aroundthenoftentimestheywillhitdeadsquidhookedon to a flutter tailed scampy and jigged or drift fished at the proper depth. drift-fish through the likely areas. Keep your net or gaff handy and, hopefully, you’ve learnedhowtousethem.
Finally, here’s the best tip I can give you. Most fishermen are talkers - talk to ‘em. Find what’sbitingonwhatbait andwhere.Currentinformation is thekey to success.Don’t be inahurry.Askasmanyquestionsasthesituationallows.File someof the informationaway forfuture reference and act on the current news.Anddon’tgiveup.Everytrip,successfulornot,isalearningexperience.That’showallseriousfishermen eventually become “fish-catchers”.

The season is finally in full swing. Everything is biting and everyone is grinning. Locally, in Santa Monica Bay, both sand and calico bass are being caught in solid numbers. Barracuda, halibut, mackerel and rockfish are also filling bags.
Water temps are in the mid 70’s and getting warmer with all this summer sunshine. Now is the time to get to the business of making your way to the Islands either on your boat or a charter. The Islands and high spots in the region are holding fish now.
With this warmer water the bluefin, yellowfin, yellowtail, and dorado have moved to our local waters, so it’s that time to look for kelp patties and breezers on top.
By the end of August and into September the marlin fishing should be looking good. We haven’t had a bite like this in years!
Over at Inseine baits Larry and Mike have nice cured Sardines.
As for me, I’m heading offshore for those pelagic fish that are here.
Until nest time.................. Tight Lines

Bruno Pasquinelli from the Fort Worth Boat Club in Texas won the first two races of the J/80 North American Championships, and from that point forward his well-polished team just kept extending their lead. Pasquinelli won the crown with a race to spare. Light air predominated the three-day, eight race event hosted by the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey. Sailed in 6-11-knots of wind, finding the pressure was frequently as important as being in phase with the shifts. Defending champion Kerry Klinger from Larchmont, New York finished second after winning a tie-breaker with Curt Johnson from the host club. Complete story, photos and results:www.calyachtclub.com

This was myfirst time crossing an ocean in anything but a commercial jet, let alone a 35 foot sailboat, andIwasmore thanjusta littleapprehensive.A routine checkof theport hull bilge showedmorethannormalamountofwater.Exceptforcondensation, or an overflow from the toilet, thebilgesonmynewWildcat350Mk2sailingcatamaran, KAT ATOMIC should be dry, yetthe beam from my flashlight on this inspection evidencedasloshingofseveralinchesofwater.I dipped my finger into the liquid and took a hesitanttaste…salt..
“Hey Colin, I think we may have a problemhere.” I yelled up to Colin Schwegman, theprofessional delivery captain form Durban,South Africa, I’d hired to help me bring mynewboat to thestates. Wewereonourknees
peering under the floor boards. Every time the boat settled into a wave, a small geyserof water would spray up through a pinhole atthebottomof thebilgecavitywherethesmallelectricbilgepumpsat.Thehighpitchedwhineof the pump would click on a second or twoafter the geyser flooded the cavity. There was supposedtobeawatertightcapoverthetopofthe hollow, positive floatation keel. Obviously this cap wasn’t watertight, and this keel wasfullofseawater.Wherewasthewatercomingfrom?Afteracheckoftheobvioussources, allnegative,Colin said, “Weshouldmakecoursechangefortheclosestport.”
The tone to his normal laid-back humorousvoicewasdeadlyserious.Wespreadthechartof the South Atlantic out across the dinningtableandgatheredaround.Colin’swifeSheilahad joined the crew in CapeTown, and MarkYaneyafellowsailinginstructorandcolleaguefrom Marina del Rey, joined the crew inDurban, were alsonovices at ocean crossings.WeleanedoverthechartandwatchedasColinpinpointedourposition.Hedrewarhumblineto the nearest port, where he believed wouldhavethefacilitiestopossiblyhaulourtwenty-

“Luderítz…is that on whatthey call the Skeleton Coast?” I inquired. Funnyhow things happen; Iwouldn’thaveknownaboutthe Skeleton Coast exceptforanarticleI’dreadinthe

“Alltheshipwrecks…right?”“Backintheolddays.”Colinnodded.

From Editor Bob Adriance of Seaworthy, the newsletter from BoatU.S. who recently looked into some of the more common reasons for on-the-water boat troubles that occur mid-season.
How important is mid-season preventive maintenance?Adriance: Preventive maintenance will helpyouavoidtheheadachesandkeepyourcreworfishing buddies comfortable and safe. Dearmanwhowantstogoslow,
There are lots of nice places out there tosee, but I don’t care much about the waythings look. I’m more interested in how aplace smells. If itwereme, I’dcheckout arefusepit.Ihearthere’soneinSunlandthatsmellsliketheinsideofadeadanddecayingraccoon. What could be more satisfyingthanstrollingaroundamountainofgarbage, sniffing through the discarded remains of an entirecity’scrap?Imaginetheenjoymentofyouandyourwifenaked, rollingaroundinanolddirtydiaper.
If old garbage isn’t you’re bag, take yourprettyladyovertothecountyrampandhangout underneath the docks. It’s muddy andsmells like a sublime mixture of two-yearold squid and fresh bird poo. Two weeksunderneath those docks would be a dreamvacation.
