History and Context
• XML has been used for data exchange in several disciplines:– GML (geographic data)– CML (chemical data)– BSML (human genome project)– XMML (mining applications)– XSIL (general-purpose scientific data)

History and Context
• New projects using XML for marine data exchange:– CML
• coastal mark-up language • Oregon State University (USA)
– MIML • marine information mark-up language• US Coastguard
– And others!!

Aims of the Project
XML Wrapper
• The test-bed will take example data flows to develop the basis of a MML specification
• COZDIS (Enhanced ECDIS) will form the base infrastructure for the test bed.

Aims of the Project
• Delivery– working test bed, outline MML
specification and a route-map for development post-project.
• Principles in realising deliverables– Work with on-going initiatives– Work with standards bodies– Ensure post-project sustainability
