I |QHNIT< >8: THURSDAY MORNIWO ...HIA 30. ||lari|»sa itmanrat. Democratic County Convention. —The del- egates from the various precincts meet in Con- vention at Mariposa on Saturday next, the Ist day of August, at the Town of Mariposa, to nominate candidates for county oflices. Thanks—To the accommodating driver to Mariposa of A. N. Fisher Sc. Co.’s stage line, “Jim Schnediker,” for delivering papers along his route to our subscribers, and for other favors. Largest Rattlesnake Yet. —Mr. William Welk presented to us the rattles of a snake which he killed last week between Ilornitos and Phillips’ Flat, which counts twenty-si* rattles and a button. It is to be seen at our office. Opposition Line of Stages. —Mr. Clift, who drives the opposition stage, has n long whip and easy going coach. His famous and fine team, when under the control of his practised whip, can’t be beat, and the. way they bring his passengers into town shortly after noon is a caution. He has our thanks for papers, Howe's Circus. Huzza 1 The Circus will be here to perform on to-morrow night Let all go who can enjoy n hearty laugh, for there will be lots of fun and any quantity of jokes. Austin, the Clown, is said to have no rival in the ludicrous, and as for grimaces and all that, he is a perfect brick. Oub Town.—Still the work of Improvement goes on. Four stone fire-proof buildings an now in process of erection, besides some eight adobe and wooden buildings. Saturdays and Sundays arc our liveliest limes, ns the miners irotn the river arid the neighboring camps as- semble in town either (o obtain provisions or to seek amusement. Fisher Sc Co.’s Line or Stages.-— On the Ist day of August Messrs. Fisher k Co. will have a tri weekly line of stages running from this town to Bear Valley by way of the new road, which has been recently completed under the auspices of Major Hardwick and other enter- prizing gentlemen. Excelsior Garden. —We received a present last week, from Mr. I). Ostrander, of the Ex- celsior Mammoth Vegetable Garden,” on the Merced River, of two splendid melons, and fine deliciously flavored peaches, for which the pro- prietor has our thanks. Mr. Ostrander fur- nishes this and neighboring camps with vege- tables, by a four horse mammoth peddling wagon. Literary FAVOES.-Cnaccountably last week our mail went to Mariposa, by which means wc did not receive several packages of Atlan- tic papers from Messrs. Rosenbaum & Van Allen, Wholesale and Retail Booksellers, Levee street, Stockton. Those enterprising gentle- men will excuse ns for not acknowledging their favors sooner, and accept our thanks for their generous donation of periodicals, &c. The Monk Lode of Quartz. The Monk lode of Quartz, a description of which wc have given in a previous number, promises to prove much richer than at first supposed. Last week in cross cutting the lode in different places, the richest kind of rock was exposed, and it is really a beautiful and interesting sight to break open the rock ami examine the cavities filled w ith brilliant gold. Fourth of July Oration. —The classic and beautiful oration delivered by Mr. S. C. Brown, Esq., at Visalia, Tulare County, on last Fourth of July, will be found on the outside sheet of to-day’s issue. It was well worthy of the oc- casion, and will favorably compare with any production of the kind we have ever read. His view's arc national, his style chaste, and his thoughts commensurate with the greatness of his subject Wc have no doubt but it will be read with great interest and profit by the pub- lic. Mariposa Brewery. —Messrs. Hornneber & Lcsman, proprietors of the Mariposa Brew- ery, appreciating our exertions this hot weath- er in the cause of Democracy, and thinking perhaps to cheer our flagging spirits, on Mon- day rolled out before our office one of those mysterious kegs which it is his wont occasion- ally to deposit at the various saloons in our town. Not wishing to establish a Lnger Beer Saloon, wc thought it was intended for “Char- ley,” next door, but when w'c found it was in- tended for us, we accepted it w ith grateful thanks, and consumed half a day in cogitating how to tap it without a tap or spigot, and suc- ceeded with considerable loss and a good wet- ting, in managing the critter,” and wish those gentlemen success in the sale of so excellent a drink this hot weather. A Mexican Robber Killed. —On last Sun- day, about noon, while Antonio, a Portuguese miner, was eating his dinner in his cabin, loca- ted on the north fork of Burns’ Creek, a mile from Ilornitos, a Mexican entered his door and presenting a revolver at his head, demanded his money. Antonio suddenly seized the bar- rel of the pistol and a desperate struggle began between the robber and the miner, which end- ed in Antonio’s braining the Mexican with the robber’s own pistol, besides sundry other wounds that he Inflicted on the person of the Mexican with an axe. Immediately after his antagonist had ceased to kick, Antonio ran to Quartzburg and informed the people of what had occurred, who proceeding to the cabin, found the Mexican dead, lying on the floor. A largo number of Mexicans assembled in this town on last Sunday night for the purpose of preventing the escape of the Portuguese, who delivered himself up for examination be- fore Justice Balfour. Antonio is a hard work- ing and industrious miner, and having lost some four thousand dollars by the failure of Adams k Co., he now carries his gold dust upon his person, which fact being known may have led to the attempt at robbery. The Mex- icans brought the corpse of their countrymen to Ilornitos where they buried him. The Coroner’s jury brought in a verdict of justifiable homicide. Quartzburo, Tloknitos and Indian Gulch Drrcn. —Mr. C. K. Peterson, Civil Engineer, having completed the survey for the line of the proposed Canal for introducing water into Mariposa County from the Yosemite Valley, has directed his attention to this section of the County. On last Monday he left Hornitos with his men to commence a preliminary sur- vey of a line for a l)itch from the main Merced River, beginning at or near Saxton’s Creek to a point at the head of Burn’s Creek. We are informed that this is not only the most direct course for introducing water into’ Quartzburg, Hornitos and Indian Gulch districts, but the cheapest and most easy of construction. ||lari|»sa itmanrat.Democratic County Convention. —The del-

egates from the various precincts meet in Con-vention at Mariposa on Saturday next, the Istday of August, at the Town of Mariposa, tonominate candidates for county oflices.

Thanks—To the accommodating driver toMariposa of A. N. Fisher Sc. Co.’s stage line,“Jim Schnediker,” for delivering papers alonghis route to our subscribers, and for otherfavors.

Largest Rattlesnake Yet.—Mr. WilliamWelk presented to us the rattles of a snakewhich he killed last week between Ilornitosand Phillips’ Flat, which counts twenty-si*rattles and a button. It is to be seen at ouroffice.

Opposition Line of Stages. —Mr. Clift, whodrives the opposition stage, has n long whipand easy going coach. His famous and fine

team, when under the control of his practisedwhip, can’t be beat, and the. way they bringhis passengersinto town shortly after noon isa caution. He has our thanks for papers,

Howe's Circus. — Huzza 1 The Circus willbe here to perform on to-morrow night Letall go who can enjoy n hearty laugh, for therewill be lots of fun and any quantity of jokes.Austin, the Clown, is said to have no rival inthe ludicrous, and as for grimaces and all that,he is a perfect brick.

Oub Town.—Still the work of Improvementgoes on. Four stone fire-proof buildings an

now in process of erection, besides some eightadobe and wooden buildings. Saturdays andSundays arc our liveliest limes, ns the minersirotn the river arid the neighboring camps as-semble in town either (o obtain provisions orto seek amusement.

Fisher ScCo.’s Line or Stages.-—On the Istday of August Messrs. Fisher k Co. will havea tri weekly line of stages running from this

town to Bear Valley by way of the new road, which has been recently completed under theauspices of Major Hardwick and other enter-prizing gentlemen.

Excelsior Garden.—We received a presentlast week, from Mr. I). Ostrander, of the “ Ex-celsior Mammoth Vegetable Garden,” on theMerced River, of two splendid melons, and finedeliciously flavored peaches, for which the pro-prietor has our thanks. Mr. Ostrander fur-nishes this and neighboring camps with vege-tables, by a four horse mammoth peddlingwagon.

Literary FAVOES.-Cnaccountably last weekour mail went to Mariposa, by which means

wc did not receive several packages of Atlan-tic papers from Messrs. Rosenbaum & VanAllen, Wholesale and Retail Booksellers, Leveestreet, Stockton. Those enterprising gentle-men will excuse ns for not acknowledging theirfavors sooner, and accept our thanks for their

generous donation of periodicals, &c.

The Monk Lode of Quartz. — The Monklode of Quartz, a description of which wc havegiven in a previous number, promises to provemuch richer than at first supposed. Last weekin cross cutting the lode in different places, the richest kind of rock was exposed, and itis really a beautiful and interesting sight to

break open the rock ami examine the cavitiesfilled w ith brilliant gold.

Fourth of July Oration. —The classic andbeautiful oration delivered by Mr. S. C.Brown,Esq., at Visalia, Tulare County, on last Fourthof July, will be found on the outside sheet ofto-day’s issue. It was well worthy of the oc-casion, and will favorably compare with anyproduction of the kind we have ever read. Hisview's arc national, his style chaste, and histhoughts commensurate with the greatness ofhis subject Wc have no doubt but it will beread with great interest and profit by the pub-lic.

Mariposa Brewery.—Messrs. Hornneber& Lcsman, proprietors of the Mariposa Brew-ery, appreciating our exertions this hot weath-er in the cause of Democracy, and thinkingperhaps to cheer our flagging spirits, on Mon-day rolled out before our office one of thosemysterious kegs which it is his wont occasion-ally to deposit at the various saloons in ourtown. Not wishing to establish a Lnger BeerSaloon, wc thought it was intended for “Char-ley,” next door, but when w'c found it was in-tended for us, we accepted it w ith gratefulthanks, and consumed half a day in cogitatinghow to tap it without a tap or spigot, and suc-ceeded with considerable loss and a good wet-ting, in “ managing the critter,” and wish thosegentlemen success in the sale of so excellenta drink this hot weather.

A Mexican Robber Killed. —On last Sun-day, about noon, while Antonio, a Portugueseminer, was eating his dinner in his cabin, loca-ted on the north fork of Burns’ Creek, a milefrom Ilornitos, a Mexican entered his door andpresenting a revolver at his head, demandedhis money. Antonio suddenly seized the bar-rel of the pistol and a desperate struggle beganbetween the robber and the miner, which end-ed in Antonio’s braining the Mexican with the

robber’s own pistol, besides sundry otherwounds that he Inflicted on the person of theMexican with an axe. Immediately afterhis antagonist had ceased to kick, Antonio ran

to Quartzburg and informed the people of whathad occurred, who proceeding to the cabin, found the Mexican dead, lying on the floor.

A largo number of Mexicans assembled inthis town on last Sunday night for the purposeof preventing the escape of the Portuguese, who delivered himself up for examination be-fore Justice Balfour. Antonio is a hard work-ing and industrious miner, and having lostsome four thousand dollars by the failure ofAdams k Co., he now carries his gold dustupon his person, which fact being known mayhave led to the attempt at robbery. The Mex-icans brought the corpse of their countrymento Ilornitos where they buried him.

The Coroner’s jury brought in a verdict of

justifiable homicide.

Quartzburo, Tloknitos and Indian Gulch

Drrcn.—Mr. C. K. Peterson, Civil Engineer, having completed the survey for the line of theproposed Canal for introducing water into

Mariposa County from the Yosemite Valley, has directed his attention to this section of theCounty. On last Monday he left Hornitoswith his men to commence a preliminary sur-

vey of a line for a l)itch from the main MercedRiver, beginning at or near Saxton’s Creek to apoint at the head of Burn’s Creek. We areinformed that this is not only the most directcourse for introducing water into’ Quartzburg,Hornitos and Indian Gulch districts, but thecheapest and most easy of construction.
