Counsellor’sComment: Peace at Christmas“Silent night, Holy night, all is calm, all is bright” – or is it?As we wait for the coming of Christ, the innocent baby born in a stable, let us take a moment to ponder, and to be at peace. For many, this time of year has become frantic and stressful. Ground yourself in values that you have chosen. Then determine how you wish to behave, even when the world around you seems full of pressure and expectation. Speak gently. Choose peace and serenity. Invite rather than command, anticipate cooperation rather than resistance. Be patient. Peace comes on soft wings, not in a thundering stampede. Measureyourwordsofjudgment.Peopleseldombenefitfromharshcriticism of their character or actions. Choose words that build peace. Be at peace with your circumstances. Allow what you have no power overtojustbeasitis.Whereyoudohavesomepower,dowhatyoucanandthenletgo.Youdon’thavetofixeverything.When you feel your temper fraying and hear your voice rising, take time out, perhaps with a gentle walk in fresh air and sunshine. Let your heart be untroubled. This Christmas season may your home befilledwithfunfamilytimes, tender, quietmomentstogether, andheartsoverflowingwithlove.

Foster Kids Day Christmas Fun Day 2017On Sunday 4th December, Marist Vinnies students took part in the annual Christmas Foster Kids Day held at St Peter’s College. It was a day of fun, games, laughter, presents, and one which gave the children’s caregivers the chance to relax and enjoytimetogether.MaristandStPeter’sstudentsspenttheday playing with the children and reconnecting with those they’d met at the previous Foster Kids Day held at Marist. Santa visited and gave each child and caregiver gifts to enjoyforChristmas.Itwasamazingtoseehowasmallactofkindness through a small gift could light up these children’s day and how grateful the caregivers were to each and every person involved. The Vinnies team this year have worked incredibly hard to provide opportunities for us and to keep events like the Foster Kids Picnic going, for that we are truly grateful. We have had so many wonderful experiences with Vinnies that none of us will ever forget. Marist Vinnies team have been a hardworking and committed group and we cannot thank each of you enough.

As part of the Performing Arts programme this year, Year 7 & 8 students were treated to an interactive African drumming experience. The tutor led the students through a range of activities relying only on non-verbal communication for the firsthalfofthesession.Theythenlearnedtohowtocreatecomplicated rhythms in unison and how to use simple vocal chantstolearnsequences.Thestudentswerecompletelyengaged in the experience and appreciated the tutor’s inspirational words as he encouraged them to always be open to learning new skills. The Performing Arts Department also received a generous donation of percussion instruments so the girls can continue to explore this interactive and invigorating art form.

The Twelve Days of ChristmasThere is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me. What in the world do leaping Lords, French hens, swimming swans and especially the patridge who won’t come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas?

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface

meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality, which the children could remember.

The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.

The four birds calling were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

Seven swans-a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership and Mercy.

The eight maids-a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self Control.

The ten Lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.

The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in The Apostles’ Creed.
