SOCCER President's Report

Mari t soccer has enjoyed another successful ea on in 1996. Congratulations to eve1yone involved. Over 250 boys played in 18 teams in the aturday ACT occer Federation competition. The increased popularity amongst older boys combined with th construction work being done on the new Pavilion building caused a couple of initial problems but these were oon in hand. Another very successful Ea ter coaching clinic was run by Mr Jack Kyna ton, a isted by cott Conlon, George Claveria and Richard Kelly, to ensure the boys were ready for the eason ahead. pon orsh.ip from EDCOM Communications and an abundant supply of

Video A.tt Encouragement awards from the outhern Cross Club ensured that d1e club was ready.

By d1e end of d1e ea on, Mari t Soccer had recorded its be t re ults in the ACT occer Federation wid1 almost all Divi ion 1 teams finishing in the top half of d1e table and the U13 and U15 teams being rnnners-up. The U15 age was perhaps our strong t. The three teams came in 2nd 1 t and 2nd in d1eir various divisions. Thi sugge ts d1e first XI and econd XI will I e ve1y trong teams next year. A number of individual player

Adam Condipodero, Matt Calde1; Oscar Zamora and Daniel Hodgson

brought credit on d1emselves during d1e eason with Stuart Gray, Adam Morgan and Gra m Lilley being selected for the ACT Prirna1y choolboy team, Daniel Byrne for d1e ACT U14 repre entative team, and Ben Galdys and Yosef Zamora for U15 team. Yo f Zamora and Luke Morgan were invited to try out for d1e ACT Academy squad.

Other highlights for the year were: • a visit of an U14 team from Japan (we let them win); • two teams competed and made the enli-finals of the

Kanga Cup; and • anod1er ve1y successful and enjoyable upporters'

Dinner. My thanks to all who worked so hard to make dlis

year as successful as it was, particularly, Mr Chri tin Brown who for the fifth year in a row collected and phoned in all d1e scores from d1e game , Jin1 Kennedy who continued as Trea urer even after hi son changed ports, d1e Marist Print Room for producing d1e

newsletters, d1e ground staff for their preparation of d1e grounds and Leotlie Littlewood for her fantastic work dlis year (again).

la t year' pr mier hip side either having completed year 12 or being too old for the oder 17 age restriction enforc d by th ACT ccer F d ration. This year's ide wa drawn from a wide cros section of players

with y ar 10 and 11 tud nts making up 12 of the 14 squad m mber .

De pit being u h a young and inexperienced team, Marist's pr mier id had a e1y ucce ful and enjoyable eason. Playing in a very evenly matched and hard fought competition, the team acquitted itself very well . Whil t we never quite dominated or set the world on fire, we played with great character, bowing real passion and determination to produce some out randing results.

Adam Condi1 oder as a stand out for the Best and Faire t award playing a our central defender stopping the va t majority of attack on ur goal. Kri Modrak had the thanl<l ta k of goalkeeping and did so with great sty! making num rous in pirational save and cleaning up many pre ur ituations.

Given seemingly end! oppo1tuniti to practi e and d velop their skill our fullbacks ro e to the

cca ion time and time again. Led by sweeper Daniel Hodg n, Matthew Calder and Pat underland , our cl fender played with great resolve and determination, marking up and pre suring the man on the ball to foil most attack and hold out long nough to give our own f01wards the chance to cor at th other end.

Captain, Trent Flanigan, took on the ta k of controlling the midfield and did o ve1y w ll arly in the season leading by xampl . Di playing det rmination, great skill and a fine under randing of the game, he produced some er ativ sol ffo11s and many in pirational through balls setting up opp rtunitie for other . Ben Hamer, Ziad Maatouk, Josh Hand and J r my Mikus were the mainstays of the midfi Id , our work.hor e playing with great determination and de ire to produce many of our excellent results. Tyson Litt! w cl mad a late return from injury to provide some w !come pice to the midfield at the end of the season.

Playing with only two de ignated fo1wards , Tim Webb and Chris Byrne were both outstanding in th po itions. They played with flair and tyle to make the mo t of our sometime limited opportunitie and worked togeth r to core many of our 38 goals this ea on. Peter Mitchell al o fitted into this unfamiliar

po ition at the end of d1e ea on after a move foiward from a dd n iv positi n. Only bad luck topped hin1 from adding v ral fine goal to the total. Chri Byrne' consistent effo1t up front dus year made 11.im a wo11hy wino r of the Coach's Award.

Wid1 fluctuating fo1tun thr ughout d1e eason we reached a high a second plac nudway d1rough d1e ea on but slipped to fini h a ve1y creditable fou1th out

of nine behind Canberra Deakin Belwest and Tuggeranong. To put d1ing into per p ctive, t Edmunds and Radford the only other coli ge in thi

club based competition, fini heel in eigd1 and nind1 positions respectively.

On anod1er positive note the boys all develop cl their skills and knowledge of the gam over d1e a on to finish a much b tter team d1an when w sta11ed d1e year. Full credit mu t g t the boy for d1eir attitude and approach to all a pe ts of occer. They are always terrific ambassadors for the college.

Special d1anks to the many parents who attended the games to su ppo1t and ncourag th boy and especially to Mr Brian Cald r who di 1 a fanta tic jol a team manager.

Congratulation al o to Matth w Calder who was award cl the Jack Kyna ton Perpetual hield for his detern1ined 'never say die ' approach at left fullback, 11.i team spuit and !us commitment to the ucce s of th team.

As dus was a relatively y ung ide we I ok fo1ward to eeing many of d1 m r turnino to th Fu· t XI next y ar.

COMBINED CA1HOIJC COLLEGES OF NSW KNOCKOUT

With d1e availability of three of our 'stars' from last year' Fu· t XI for dlis open age competition we had high hopes of success again this year. The first round of dlis knockout competition saw us travel to Goulburn to play t Patrick's.

Aniving in Goulburn v 1y confident of a win, we put fo1ward a di appointing di play. truggling with the muddy and uneven condition and d1e agricultural 'style ' of our opponent , our pas ing game con istendy broke down putting u under undue pre ur . Unfortunately, as our frustration grew and we wasted our scoring opportuniti , d1e kick and cha e approach of t Pats resulted in ucce . Bu yed by the ve1y vocal uppo1t of the sizeable t Pats crowd the home team

managed to hold on and we were knocked out in the first round. Ald1ough extremely di appointing for us, it wa definitely a learning experience for our Fir t XI.
