The show received many accolades including the following from Stephen Dallow: ‘’The production was a delight to watch and see not only the strength in our performance and story telling but the opportunities gained from devising and self-directing a piece of theatre. A number of dance and drama conventions were used and the addition of contemporary dance bought the Matariki story to life. It has been a very busy term and I have been impressed by so many things. Some girls were acknowledged at our rewards assembly today. The progress made with academic work, the girls who act as mentors, the great response to the can appeal, those who do volunteer work with Young Vinnies, the leaders of the wonderful production Whitu and all involved who committed to making it such a success, determination and fair play on the sports field, the senior girls who helped with the year 7 & 8 social, Champagnat House Mass, the Marist Stella Choir’s performance, Muna, Pompallier Shield and much more. Comments from staff:“Last night was an amazing performance. Congratulations to the team of staff and students who made it happen. You should all be so proud. The leadership, hard-work, support and guidance for our whanau across all levels, ethnicities, abilities and personalities is unwavering. The plot was beautifully scripted, the characters were on point, choreography and costumes … wow, wow & wow. The direction was superb … say no more.”“Man last night was so great. It was a seriously awesome show, and you actually managed to turn the gym into a beautiful and effective performance space. It was stunning and you should all be very proud.”“I think the production was beautiful and a great celebration of who we are as New Zealanders. Fantastic work by cast and crew!!”

Comments from students:“It was amazing to be involved in the production this year. I really hope we get to do something like this again next year!”“I loved it. It was so cool to dress up and be on stage, with the lighting and the set. I loved being in the dances, and getting to know so many people in the school. It is the best thing I have done since joining Marist.”“For me the highlight was that we were able to realise our vision of Compassion and Courage to build Community. It was so cool to see Year 7 and Year 13 working alongside each other to achieve a common goal. The friendships we made will last forever.”“It was really awesome to see the younger students bond with each other. There was a real family spirit between all the students and that made the show so special.”

Comments from whanau:“Wow! That was incredible. It was so awesome to see all our Marist values rolled into one fantastic show.”“Thank you for all your hard-work. It was great to see the students take responsibility for every aspect of the show, from choreography, to sound and lighting!”“What a beautiful story. Synopsis:There are many wonderful stories that are linked to the annual occurrence of the magical Matariki constellation in the June night sky. One legend has it that this constellation of seven stars represents a whanau of six sisters and their mother, Matariki. The whanau are called together once a year to use their special talents and gifts to help their kuia prepare the earth for the New Year.

In our story - Whitu - six sisters are called to return home to their rural village by their beloved kuia, Nan. The reason for this summons is unclear and their mother, Matariki, is haunted by a sense of uneasiness. One by one, as the sisters arrive home, it becomes clear that what they have been searching for has been a lot closer than they thought. Nan reminds them they are surrounded by the love and protection of their ancestors, and that the shoulders on which they stand are strong and steady. They learn that change, although often frightening, can help us grow and provide us with opportunities to unlock our potential.

Whitu is a Matariki story about whanau; about sisterhood; about celebrating our unique contribution to the world - our Matariki story.

BasketballThroughout this winter sport season the 19A basketball team has made some major improvements. With help and support from coaches Patrick and Jeff, plus manager Ms Weijermars, we have reached our common goal - to play and gel more as a team. With a mix of Year 10-13 girls we have created a very strong bond between us, on as well as off court. After much training, playing against Lynfield College in the second round of games we were very proud of our win. Although we did not get the result we wanted playing all our games we were still able to finish smiling and all our hard work and dedication showed. We are very proud of the efforts each player in this team has put in. We also look forward to the remaining games in the next half of our season.

The Marist U19B Basketball team (or the Marist Bulldogs as we like to say) is a team that has developed really well. Our team focuses on togetherness and team building, improving in every game and training to the best of our ability. This season our results are cut in half with 5 wins and 5 loses. With more games next term we are striving to do our team and school very proud. Cheers to this season of basketball! A big thank you to Ms Leggett for supporting us at every game. Thanks Jackson, Milan, Johnafi and Johnny for helping out at trainings on Tuesdays. And most of all thank you to our Coach Geoff for building us up well, helping us improve our skills and believing in us.

The U15 are up against some strong and experienced teams such as Onehunga, Mt Albert and Massey. However each week Marist turns up with smiles on their faces and ready to play. They have enjoyed every part of their season and with the help of their coach the team have been able to increase points on the scoreboard. Well done girls!

FootballIt has been a great season for Year 7 and 8 Football, with good skills and teamwork leading to excellent results. With only one loss, the team sits close to the top of the table. The mix of experience and new players has developed impressively. Every game they create many chances while remaining determined in defence. Only conceding 3 goals all season, with a 4 – 0 win against the top Baradene side. There are 4 games left to play and they are fully committed and enjoy great support from parents, coaches and the college. The last 3 matches for the 1st XI have featured away draws against Mt Roskill and Botany Downs and a hard fought win at Long Bay. These results have secured their places in the Senior A grade for next season, which was the main goal for 2017. The team has worked really hard to improve, and appreciate all the support so far. 2nd XI Football have faced some difficult teams however they continue to play strong and with Marist team spirit.

HockeyThe start of this hockey season has been tough and frustrating for the 1XI. Moving up a grade, they have had some very good games against some skillful opposition. Games against Baradene, Sancta Maria and Ormiston Senior College showed our girls certainly have the skills and determination. The Papatoetoe game was extremely frustrating with 90% possession but unable to score a goal. Whilst

the girls are yet to secure a win they have shown that they can be a strong force. I am sure that the elusive win will come our way next term. We have held some very successful fundraising activities and the car wash was a great team building event too.

2nd XI hockey season started slowly securing players, however with the help of Rommel, our parent coach, the girls confidence in hitting and passing has improved. 3 games in we found our space and managed to meet the passes to win 5-1 against Onehunga. We have faced many talented 1st XI teams making it no easy competition. We look forward to next term having a goalie and putting our channelling to the test. 6 games into the season and the U15 Hockey team are currently sitting in 3rd spot of Grade C with 4 wins and 2 loses. The girls have stepped it up this year, training twice a week at the chilly hour of 7am! There is a great sense of team spirit between the girls which shows on and off the field. Their dedication was out in true force in week 3 of training when the heavens opened up and it poured with rain. Also training at the Roskill Turf were a boys team... as the first drops of rain hit the turf the boys scurried off the turf and into the sheds. Meanwhile our Marist girls, including the 1st XI team, battled on and continued training in the rain, now that’s what I call resilience and commitment! Still more work to be done in Term 3… bring it on… the season isn’t over yet!!

LacrosseLacrosse has been amazing for both the new and returning girls. Marist College hopes to spread awareness so more girls will join the sport in years to come. Having no official coach at the start made the senior girls step up and take leadership to help new girls as they learn new skills. Initially quiet and shy calling for the ball and backup, through team building activities and intense training the girls have learned that being loud is what we want on the field. With limited resources, the lacrosse team has manage to do very well winning the majority of their games this season. Their sportsmanship and determination makes our school shine. Placing in the top 4 teams in our grade is a great achievement. This season has made the team stronger and more confident. I wish all the girls the best of luck.

NetballIn a great first half of the netball season, 7D had a fantastic win against Auckland Normal Intermediate Stars. Some amazing ball skill from 7E, however they fell short 5 – 9 to Remuera. Fantastic team spirit from 7E has seen them move into Section 1 for their grade. Six weeks into the competition and the Marist Premier Netball team sits at third place, winning their last game against Pakuranga Premier 1. Senior A had a close game against Kings and in the last few minutes saw Marist win the game by one. Senior Red have shown some amazing defensive netball on court. They have only had two losses which were both to Parnell Senior. Some great netball skills shown from 9A. Overall netball continues to grow at Marist and all teams have improved. The championship round begins next term, good luck to all teams!

Year 7 & 8 Water PoloYear 7 & 8 Water Polo have had a great term, attending all training and games. They have achieved mixed results but have always played with good spirit and have kept their heads held high. The girls’ defence has developed so much. The team put in 100% and the coaches have felt privileged to witness the development of the team. Their optimism, focus and commitment makes coaching them a pleasure. The coaches can see a bright future for the girls in Water Polo and look forward to continuing to work with the team in Term 3. Thank you to student coaches Sophie Holubicka and Charlotte Barham for all your help!

Counsellor’s Comment: Responding healthily to stress and change, on top of that examsThere is a lot going on when you are a teenager. Pressure is mounting from different directions: parents and teachers are telling you to be ‘more responsible’, friends are introducing you to all sorts of new ideas, and the media is constantly bombarding you with messages about how you should look and act if you want to be popular and successful. On top of all that, exams are on the horizon and decisions will need to be made about your future. You might find yourself questioning who you are and where you fit in. You are definitely not a child any more, but you are not fully adult either. While the teenage years can be fun and exciting at times, they also bring many new challenges. To move successfully from being a child to an adult, you need to become more independent. Your ability to think critically may cause you to challenge rules imposed on you by adults who want to protect you. It can sometimes feel like a tug of war between you and them, which can lead to arguments. Another part of adolescence is developing a stronger sense of your own identity. It is normal to be asking yourself questions like ‘Who am I?’ and ‘Where do I fit in?’ This can be exciting, daunting and confusing all at the same time.Have you ever found yourself stressing about something for days and then a week later realised that it really didn’t matter at all? Perhaps you talked it over with a friend, a family member, a school counsellor or a Dean. Although the situation hasn’t changed, you started thinking differently about it, and as a result your mood lifted. The way we think determines the way we feel. Changing how we think will change how we feel.

Mrs Helen McEwen, Counsellor (from: Good Thinking, Sarah Edelman and Louise Remond)

Congratulations to Shyla Lundon-Treweek who will be competing in August at the GKR Karate World Cup in the Gold Coast as a member of the New Zealand national team. Shyla will also be participating in a Guiness World Record attempt for the most people to simultaneously break a board. Good luck Shyla.

Singing cup competitionThe long standing tradition of our Marist Singing cup competition again gathered singers from all age groups. Over two days, the adjudicating panel – Miss Nicklin, Miss Philips and Mrs Karadjov, enjoyed the performances of the test pieces: Oh Shenandoah, Maybe and Can’t help lovin’ that man of mine.Well done to all participating girls - it was a pleasure to see the high standard of preparation and performance skills shown by all contestants. Our job as adjudicators was really hard.Congratulations to the following girls, who will compete for the Singing cup in their category:Junior category Year 7 - 8: Tiana-Tai Leausa, Patricia Reyes, Skyler Shanahan-Trainer.Intermediate category Year 9 - 10: Rhea Bhide, Alebina Pailate, Lisandra Solis.Senior category Year 11 - 13: Jamie Cottingham, Meoghan Craig, Madeleine Worsley. The Singing cup finals will take place in the Music room Thursday 27th July, 5:30 – 6:30pm. The adjudicator this year is Emma Bishop, President of Drama NZ and an experienced vocal coach. Well done and good luck!

A group of year 12 students went to the Kei a Tātou te Ihi (KATTI) Year 12 programme organised by Auckland university

“KATTI was an informative Māori education program that brought to light each individual’s leadership qualities through participation in group activities. Upon arrival the four of us were immediately out of our comfort zone, even more so when we were separated into groups. The activities provided were engaging and encouraged participation from everyone in a comfortable friendly environment. We learnt how to work as team within a diverse and unfamiliar environment bringing forth our leadership qualities which helped achieve the task at hand. We arrived with low confidence but excited for the day ahead. We left as confident young Māori women ready to face challenges with the skills we had gained. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day and I would definitely recommend KATTI to future students.” Tiana Trego-Hall
