bull QUESTION FOR THE DAYbull Dear Compassbull In a recent GML you mentioned that the Bible indicates that the world is

about 6000 years old Im not positive but havent we found dinosaur bones dating much further back than 6000 years Im really perplexed by the issue of dinosaurs and prehistoric man in general Ive never heard anyone address this How do we explain this as Christians

bullANSWER

bull Many if not most people believe that there is scientific proof that the world is billions of years old but it is simply not true For starters we believe the Bible is one hundred percent accurate therefore we can trust what Jesus said over any scientist And Jesus said the earth started with two humans not two rocks that evolved into humans

bull from the beginning of creation God made them male and female mdashMark 106 But when faced with purportedly scientific evidence that the world is billions of years old should we declare the Bible wrong or should we look closely at the evidence We think the latter Well take Jesus words over any mortal human Hey well take Jesus words over anything period

bull There is no proof that the earth is billions of years old You may have heard that carbon dating was used to prove the earths age but that is impossible Carbon dating based on the ratio of Carbon-14 and Carbon-12 sometimes referred to as Carbon 14 Dating CANNOT date rocks It can only date something that is or has been a living organism

bull In a simple explanation carbon has unique properties that are essential for life on earth A bone or a leaf shrub or tree has a measurable amount of carbon As soon as something dies the amount of carbon begins to decrease Working backwards anything that has detectable carbon 14 MUST be less than 40-50 thousand years old because the carbon would have diminisheddisappeared altogether by then

bull However not all organisms lose their carbon at the same rate The amount of carbon in the atmosphere has NOT been constant For example it was higher before the Industrial Revolution when massive amounts of fossil fuels began burning which caused the carbon to decrease This caused things which died at that time to date older when carbon tested Volcanic eruptions affect the carbon content And of course the flood of Noah would have changed the earth drasticallymdashand theres no way to measure the before

bull The best carbon dating tests come from dated graves but even so because of the many anomalies even non-Christian archaeologists regard carbon dating as unreliable

bull There are other methods scientists use to date rocks but assumptions have to be made For instance to measure isotope concentrations you must first ASSUME that rocks have been around for billions of years Then the amount of isotopes is linked to that ASSUMPTION If you assume that the rocks are 6000 to 10000 years old you obviously have a different set of results

bull 8) Limits on Technology mdash The events of the Tribulation also give us an indication of just how far technology can be allowed to go and its not that much farther Take for example the fact that rare earth metals vital to the construction of todays technologies are quickly running out Or consider the fact that future events prophesied in the Bible involve all people but only people on this earth That pretty well makes it clear that we will not be colonizing any moons or planets in the near future Plus the destruction of infrastructure and power grids along with solar disruption by the end of the Tribulation may reveal why the soldiers at Armageddon are pictured as using horses and primitive weapons Mans technology along with most of the earth will have been decimated
