Oneofthemostthoroughlyteste
dhandgunsinhistory,
theMK23/Mark23projectoriginatedin1991whenHK
wasawardedadevelopmentcontractfortheSpecial
OperationsForcesOffensiveHandgunWeaponSystem,
consistingofacaliber.45pistol,detachablesoundand
flashsuppresso
r,andlaseraimingmodule(LAM).
Duringtesting,MK23pistolsmetthemoststringent
operationaland
accuracyrequirementseverdemandedof
acombathandg
un.MK23pistolsachievedmatchgrade
accuracyoflessthana2.5inchmaximumextreme
spreadin5-roundshotgroupsat25meterswithservice
ammunition.En
durancetestingdemonstratedaservice
lifeofover30,000roundsof+Pammunitionwithnoparts
breakage,withanadditional30,000roundscertifiedon
theslideandfra
me.
Tomeetthereliabilityrequirement,thepistolhadto
demonstrateaminimumof2,000meanroundsbetween
stoppages(MRBS)withbothM1911balland+P
ammunition.TheminimumMRBSachievedintestingwas
6,027andthem
aximumwas15,122!
Duringover450
accuracytestfiringsfromaprecision
firingfixture,MK
23pistolsfarexceededthegovernment
requirement,av
eraging1.44inches,with65groupsof
lessthanonein
ch.Therewerefourgroupsof.5inches,
with5roundsgoingthroughthesamehole!Thisincluded
firingwithandw
ithoutthesound/flashsuppressor
attached.

Threepistolsweretestedfora
ccuracyafterfiringover
30,000rounds,thespecifieds
ervicelifeofthepistol,and
stillmetthenewpistolaccurac
yrequirement.An
innovativedesignfeature,ahightemperaturerubberO-
ringonthebarrelthatsealsthebarrelintheslideuntil
unlocking,ledtothisremarkab
leachievement.TheO-ring
lastsbeyond20,000roundsandcanbereplacedbythe
operatorwithouttoolsinsecon
ds.
Tomeetoperationalenvironmentalrequirements,the
pistolwasfunctiontestedat+140and-250F,immersedin
saltwater,exposedtosurf,salt-fog,sand-dust,mud,
icing,unlubricated,andavarie
tyofotherfouled
environments.Aspecialmaritimesurfacecoatingprotects
thepistolfromcorrosion,inalloftheseoperational
environments.
Thebarrelisthreadedtoacceptaccessoriessuchasa
flashandsoundsuppressor.T
heuniqueHKpolygonal
boreprofileincreasesmuzzlevelocityandservicelife,
reducesborefoulingandease
scleaning.
TheframemountedMK23decockingleverisseparate
fromtheambidextroussafetylever.Itallowsthehammer
tobeloweredquietlyandsafelyfromthesingleaction
position.Whenthehammeris
down,theambidextrous
framemountedsafetyleveris
lockedinthefireposition
sothatthepistolisalwaysrea
dyfordoubleaction
operation.Wh
enthehammeriscockedandlockedin
singleactionmodewiththesafetyleveronsafe,the
decockerisblockedsothatthepistolisalwaysreadyfor
singleactionoperation.Evenwiththesafetylever
engaged,the
slidecanstillbemanipulatedtoloadand
clearthepisto
l.
Theextended
slidereleaseleverandtheambidextrous
magazinereleaseareeasilyoperatedwithoutadjustment
ofthefiringgripusingthefiringhandthumborindex
finger.

systemthatreducesrecoilforcestotheshooterand
