Today’s program is going to cover the basic principles for servicing the largest tires and wheels on various types of earthmoving equipment.We are going to discuss some of the most important safety procedures and concepts for servicing these off-the-road, or OTR assemblies using different types of hydraulic cranes and tools.

• Rubber tire dump trucks, loaders, and scrapers are able to move massive amounts of material over every imaginable type of terrain.

• In order to carry several tons of material, the recommended air pressure in the tire must be regularly maintained. Inflation pressure is a lot like a person’s blood pressure. If it is too low or too high, humans are in danger. The same principle applies for OTR tires.

• The important thing to remember is that even new pressure gauges can be out of spec, so they should be regularly checked for accuracy using an air gauge check station or calibrated master gauge.

• Improper inflation pressure, whether under or over the required pressure for the load, can result in a number of problems including damaged tires, accidents, or in the worst case scenario, tire fires.

• Inflation pressure must always be determined by the tire manufacturer or technical expert with the proper training. In order to establish the correct inflation pressure, the type of tire, the weight the tire will carry, and the speed of the vehicle must all be considered.

• Some earthmover tires require over 100 pounds of air pressure per square inch in order to carry the load. When high pressure is combined with large volume, the resulting blast from a rim separation is often deadly. This is why proper OTR tire and rim safety is so critical. Shortcuts must never be taken, components must be properly matched, and damaged rim components must never be used.

• OTR tire service is different from all other types of tire service. When earthmover assemblies are involved, speed should be the absolute last priority. The most important factor is the safety of the jobsite and the assembly following service.

Site Preparation and Lifting

• By definition, off-the –road vehicles operate where the pavement ends. But there are literally thousands of different applications and environmental conditions that encompass the entire OTR tire service industry, so technicians must be prepared to work on a variety of different surfaces.

• A professional OTR technician understands that safety is a top priority at every jobsite and it begins with the location of the equipment.

• Whenever possible, the operator should position the vehicle in need of service on a hard, flat, and level surface that is well away from any overhead powerlines or other overhanging structures.

• If the vehicle is loaded, the operator should dump the load so the technician does not have to work anywhere near or under a full bed.

• Whenever possible, the vehicle tire assemblies should be washed so they can be inspected before work begins.

• Before attempting to work on any vehicle or equipment, it must have an “Out of Service tag attached to prevent accidental operation of the vehicle. If it has a battery isolator, it must be positively isolated and tested for dead before attaching the tag.

• The next step is to place the correct size wheel chocks on both sides of at least one tire that will remain on the ground.

• Cones should be placed around the work zone to warn others to stay out.

• The next step is to select a hydraulic jack with more capacity than the weight being lifted. All jacking equipment should have the safe working limit, or SWL, clearly stamped on the main cylinder.

• If the ground is soft or uneven, a metal or composite plate should be placed under the jack.

• In some instances, oak or composite cribbing is necessary to raise the jack to the working height, whenever setting cribbing in this manner, always make sure the blocks are crossed and widest at the base.

• If jack stands are available and the ground is hard and flat, the safe working limit is more than the load, the equipment can be lowered onto them.

• Cribbing can also be used as jack stands. Oak has traditionally be used, but most OTR tire dealers are switching to composite cribbing.

• Never rely solely on the hydraulic jack or vehicle hydraulics to support the weight on any piece of OTR equipment. By using approved jack stands or the proper cribbing under the axle, you can protect yourself from a hydraulic leak or a blown seal that can cause the jack to slowly or suddenly lower after the vehicle is raised.

• When airing up the tire, the use of an MSHA/OSHA compliant remote inflator in mandatory to stay out of the trajectory zone of the tire and rim.
