Q: Why did you join the SCLAA? What benefi ts do you believe the SCLAA offers all their Members?

David: I joined the SCLAA to network with like-minded people and to understand what is happening in the industry that could either be adopted or avoided in the DMO. In addition, the DMO Logistics body of work addresses more facets of business that is currently undertaken or recognised by SCLAA Members and therefore I would like the opportunity to raise the profi le of DMO activities. The DMO is professionalising its workforce through all levels of training and education, but does not have a professional body or pathway to become a CPL. The SCLAA fi ts the bill in all these regards. Being able to attend out-of-work sessions and learn about our industry is also extremely benefi cial.

Q: How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?

David: I have been in the industry since 1974 when I joined straight from school, before going to sea with the merchant navy and royal navy as a supply offi cer. I have both a Supply Chain and Materiel Acquisition background, with my recent experiences being with major defence capital acquisition projects and Logistics professionalisation. I spent eighteen years working for the Defence industry before joining the DMO in 2007. I am currently the Chair of the Logistics Community of Practice, Member of the Materiel Logistics Council and A committee member for the ACT/SNSW Chapter of the SCLAA.

Q: What is your current job role and what are your areas of responsibilities?

David: I am currently the Helicopter Systems Division Director of Materiel Logistics with overall responsibility for the strategic direction and management of all facets of Logistics; including project support, helicopter platform in-service support, platform disposals, hazardous materials and operational support planning. In addition, I have responsibility for professional development programs, recruitment and organisational planning.

The SCLAA welcomes new members to its association on a regular basis. Please join with us in learning more about one of our new members.

The NSW Division held a St Patrick’s Day Networking Event and has scheduled all of its events for 2011. The next event on May the 19th, and to be held at the University of Western Sydney (Parramatta), will address the new National Chain of Responsibility Laws that will impact every company and individual in the Supply Chain and Logistics industry in Australia. Everybody involved in the Supply Chain, Logistics and freight industries can be held responsible for breaches of transport and safety laws. All companies, contractors and providers need to have

formal policies and procedures in place. This includes everyone in transport, warehouse and freight companies, plus anyone sending or receiving goods by road. The SCLAA has organised an expert panel from Freightrain and the RTA to brief Members on these important issues, including Chris Rowlands, Managing Director of Freightrain, Paul Endycott, Manager Investigation and Accreditation RTA and Colin Karlson a Certifi ed Heavy Vehicle Auditor. Mid year we have organised a Gartner presentation on Sales and Operations Planning and a visit to Lion Nathan to see their sales and operations planning system in action. Details on both events will be available soon. The NSW Committee has decided to hold more events as breakfast sessions to assist Members with travel times, as after-work events are becoming geographically impossible with the traffi c in Sydney. We welcome feedback from Members at anytime as to what events they would like us to organise.

SCLAA NSW Division is pleased to announce that they have a new Chairman, Mark Foxton. Beginning his career with manufacturer International Combustion Limited, Mark spent over fi fteen years in the Boiler making industry in a variety of roles eventually

leading to project management of their Australia wide Project Management Business system implementation. This led naturally to a career in IT over the last twenty years. Initially Mark joined project and maintenance management vendor MRO Software Limited working in consulting and later sales roles, including opening new markets throughout Asia and winning several sales awards. More recently Mark has worked with New Zealand based ERP vendor Greentree International as Channels Director and Microsoft Reseller Hands-on Systems in business development and marketing roles. He is currently the Direct Marketing Manager, MRO Software Limited.

The SCLAA, Queensland Division, in conjunction with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Strategix Training Group,

t h e Tr a n s p o r t a n d Lo g i s t i c s Workforce Advisory Group and apics will offi cially be launching the 2011 Queensland Supply Chain & Logistics Awards at a breakfast function on Wednesday the 25th of May. Keynote

Speaker for the morning will be Jennifer Goddard who will be talking about the Logistics of running a world memory championship. Imagine running an event with 10 intensive competitions over three days with 125 competitors from 15 countries, $250,000 prize money, broadcast live on TV to over 300 million people. Oh, and you have never met your team before and many don’t speak English! This was the Logistical Challenge Jennifer Goddard was faced in October last year when running the World Memory Championships in Guangzhou, China. With very tight timeframes, Jennifer and the team marked:- 13,000 Abstract images, 125,000 Binary numbers, 90,000 numbers that remembered in the hour, 25,000 Speed numbers, 3,500 Historical and future dates, 60,000 individual playing cards, 9,000 random words, 6,000 spoken numbers, 11,000 speed

cards, and matched 6,000 names with the face. That is over 450,000 items – and those are just the ones the competitors got right! But to be sure, we checked and double checked so in all over 1,000,000 individual pieces of data were reviewed over the three days. During the morning Jennifer will also teach attendees the secrets to managing what could have been a logistical nightmare as well as the 12 steps to Remembering Names and Faces - a key skill everyone needs. This function will also be the offi cial launch of the 2011 Queensland Supply Chain and Logistics Awards with a group of past Queensland SCL Awardees discussing what they have gained from the award program personally and professionally. Panelists will include Cassandra Parisotto, Site Learning and Development Co-Ordinator Human Resources, Newmont Mining Corporation, John Edwards, Managing Director, ProcureNet, Bree Pitcher, Procurement Offi cer- Business & Financial Services – Supply, Tarong Energy Corporation and Jimmy Southwood. To reserve your seat or a corporate table, simply call the SCLAA National Offi ce on 1300 364 160 or email [email protected] for a booking form. The QLD SCL Awards is the Queensland feeder program for the Australian Supply Chain and Logistics Awards which will be held on the 11th of November at the Burswood Entertainment Complex, Perth, Western Australia.

On the 8th of April the SCLAA, Queensland Division, hosted an industry event in Rockhampton for the wider Central Queensland (CQ) region to provide a platform from which the industry can share recent Supply Chain successes. The April event was also designed to announce the SCLAA’s on-going commitment to the Central

Queensland (CQ) region by providing a permanent presence in Rockhampton, through the development, of our fi rst offi cial regional Chapter. The event was a tremendous success, attended and briefed by the Mayor of Rockhampton, Brad Carter, and supported by several local and Federal Ministers of Parliament (MP). There was over 70 people in attendance at the launch and strategic regional industry updates were also provided by Mr Gavin

Steele, General Manager Infrastructure/Planning at Rockhampton Regional Council and Mr Frank Munnich, Chairperson of the CQ Intermodal Logistics Hub Lobby Group, and as some of you might remember, the runner up for the Experience Pays category in the 2010 Queensland Supply Chain and Logistics Awards. Many thanks must go the Mayor, the Rockhampton Regional Council staff, the local and Federal MP’s and the regional industry itself for the great show of support for activities like this in Rockhampton and their valuable contribution to the wonderful frenzy of industry activity currently occurring throughout Central Queensland. This is a region to be closely watched by the rest of the Supply Chain & Logistics community over the coming decade and the SCLAA look forward to supporting them during this period of great excitement in Central Queensland.

It has been another month of hectic planning and activity but in the mantra of ‘Raising The Bar’ I am proud of what we are achieving. But we can only achieve these things through the dedication of our Victorian committee, all of whom are volunteers; so let me start with a call for new

committee members. If you feel you would like to help then please send myself, or our Vice President, Robert Heaton, an email. We would be delighted to hear from you. Looking out to May we have a number of high profile activities planned. On the 18th we be launching the Geelong Chapter at Ocean Grove Golf Club. This is our fi rst push at bringing SCLAA membership to regional Victoria so we are looking forward to a good turnout and lots of interest.

I am delighted to announce that on May 26th, Paul Little, TOLL Holdings CEO, has agreed to address our Future Leaders Group at a breakfast event. I am also pleased to

announce that our National partners RMIT have agreed to co-sponsor this event by making their Emily Mac facility available as a venue. If you have young professionals in your organisation don’t hesitate to get them registered for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

On the 25th and 26th we will have a strong promotional presence at SMART Conference 2011 and moreover, our Vice President, Robert Heaton is a speaker. If you are in Sydney then please find time to attend what is clearly Australia’s largest Supply Chain conference. Western Australia’s most recent event saw SCLAA Members and friends meeting at the Curtin University Bentley campus to see what ‘the youth of today’ have been up to in terms of Supply Chain.

The Fresh Connection is an advanced web based business simulation that challenges participants to demonstrate and improve their knowledge of Supply Chain principles. The objective for participating teams is to save the fi ctional company, the Fresh Connection, from financial ruin. The challenge is to collaborate with fellow team members, craft a strategy, integrate decisions implement change, make effective strategic and tactical decisions, and to completely transform the Supply Chain of the Fresh Connection to make it profi table again.

The 2011 competition commenced in March and at the time of writing the Student team from Curtin University was performing well and beating a number of teams from blue chip multi-nationals. We would like to thank Geoff Palm, David Hiscox for providing a comprehensive overview of the simulation tool and to Simon Hoese from the Curtin University team who shared with us some of the secrets of their success.

The SCLAA recently announced that the format, venue and date have been set for the 51st Australian Supply Chain and Logistics (ASCL) Awards. According to the ASCL Awards Chairman, Vince Aisthorpe, the 2011 ASCL Awards evening will be held on Thursday the

11th of November at the Burswood Entertainment Complex in Perth, Western Australia. “The ASCL Awards is the longest running national awards program in the industry and the SCLAA is extremely proud of its fi fty-one year history. They are designed to recognise high achievement by individuals and companies in this diverse industry and to acknowledge the innovative projects that are being carried out every day in all parts of Australia. The program allows nomination of suppliers, business partners, companies or people who work for them and publically recognises their efforts,” Mr Aisthorpe said. “The ASCL Awards are the most recognised and esteemed awards for a company to be awarded in the Supply Chain, Logistics and Transport industries and we look forward to the

2011 event. A not-to-be-missed event we hope you mark in your calendar.” he said. The 2011 ASCL Awards are sponsored by SupplyChain Review, apc, CEVA Logistics, Dematic, Toyota Materials Handling and Supply Chain Services Australia. Traditional and new sponsors, award nominees and interested event attendees are invited to contact ASCLA at [email protected]
