Dear Friends,

Gosh, we’ve had a fun Spring! Jacqueline de Jonge taught classes here - she’s a lovely lady who makes spectacular quilts! Then, Dennis Bevins gave a presentation on the Little House on The Prairie fabric line. What a treat for us - he is so entertaining and informative (the pie and ice cream social afterward wasn’t bad either). He says he’s com-ing back next year for a presentation on fabric for the book series and television show “Outlander”. We followed that up with the Treasure Shop Hop - it’s always a fun time, but this year it was especially so.

Now we’re gearing up for Summer activities. Row by Row starts on the first day of Summer, June 21. You can read all about it in the next column, but we can’t wait! Cheryl Gunn’s design for our row is based on our logo and our license plate and she knocked it out of the park! Since Patty is the Idaho Coordinator (assisted by Lisa Murrant of Huckleberry Patches), she’s already seen several of the rows from area shops and they are terrific. We anticipate that 33 stores across the state will participate - watch the “Idaho Row By Row” FaceBook page for more information.

Don’t forget Market Party. This annual event is scheduled for Sunday, June 26, and promises to be outstanding! In case you’ve never at-tended (poor you), we buy lots and lots of stuff at Spring Quilt Market. Then we work like little elves to make models from new patterns and books. The night before the big day, we restage the store and put out all the new models and merchandise we’ve selected. You do need a ticket to attend - they are free but in limited supply. There is always a free project and lots of fabulous food! See the front page for details.

We still have spots available in Becky Goldsmith’s classes in August - don’t wait too long. Becky is half of the Piece O’ Cake design team and she is a RIOT! And a great teacher and a great designer.

And lots more! See you soon and thanks for your continued support!

Idaho is on board for the second year with the International Row by Row Experience! This new kind of Shop Hop runs from June 21 through September 6, so you’ll have all Summer to play. Simply visit any participat-ing shop and receive a FREE pattern for a

row in a quilt; the theme this year is “Row by Row, Home Sweet Home. Our row is shown below, designed once again by Cheryl Gunn of Waltzing with Bears. Our license plate is shown to the right.

Combine at least eight rows and be the first to bring it into a participat-ing shop and you’ll win 25 Fat Quarters. Shops in all 50 States, Canada and Europe are participating. Our 2015 winner was Carol Bartlow; the founder of Row By Row borrowed Carol’s quilt to display at an international Quilt Show in Co-logne, Germany - Wow!

“See You In September” isn’t just the name of a golden oldie, it’s also the case of Farmer Jo’s Club - we’re taking the Summer off and will start again in September.

What fun we have with our unique version of Jo’s Little Women Club. It’s essentially a Block-of-the-Month class, featuring Jo Morton fabric and the Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt book by Laurie Aaron Hird. After you’ve purchased the book, you’ll receive a kit each month to make

two blocks from the book. We’ll hand-piece during our session, have a snack, share information, and talk about the wonderful stories told in the book (inspired by the Farmer’s Wife Magazine subscriber re-sponses to this question posed by the magazine in 1922: “If you had a daughter of marriageable age, would you, in light of your own experi-ence, have her marry a farmer?”).

We have been working/playing away on this fun pieced and appliquéd quilt from Anni Downs, Austra-lian designer and owner of Hatched and Patched. Instead of using print fabrics, we’re using Andover’s Textured Solids line and are creating our own prints with Sue Spargo’s Eleganza threads. SO MUCH FUN. You’ll purchase a Starter Kit ($149.99), which includes the pattern, five yards of background fabric, and an

assortment of 1/3 yard cuts of Textured Solids fabrics. Attending the monthly Stitchalongs (Starter Kit purchase required for attendance) will give you even more fun, some gossip (even if we have to make it up), Patty’s help with your appliqué, and her handouts of the stitches/threads/motifs she used to make this great quilt even better!

Patty Hinkel, 1 session/month, Wednesdays July 6, August 3, September 7, 6-8 pm

What a great opportunity to learn from the best! Sylvain, an award-winning quilter and digitizer, is coming from Bernina of America to teach you all the “How-To’s” of BERNINA Embroidery Software 7. Whether you own the software today, are considering upgrad-ing to level 7, or are thinking about purchas-ing it, this course will definitely get you “in the know”. You’ll build a foundation of knowledge with this hands-on class that will help you use many tools, including learning basic editing; having fun with lettering and monogramming, exploring the possibilities of Artwork Canvas; learning how easy it is to create appliqué with software; and many, many digitizing tips. The $199 fee covers both days.

Save the dates! We are so happy to have Janet Rae Nesbitt, former co-owner of Buggy Barn Quilts in Reardan, Washington, coming to town to teach classes. As the owner of One S1ster Designs, she contin-ues to design fabrics and write books with fun and whimsical designs, featuring her signature Crazy piecing technique. We don’t have the classes sorted out yet so watch for more information in our Fall news-letter. Pictured is Janet’s newest book, “Crazy at the Cabin”, available in August.

We started our Saturday/Sunday Sam-pler in October and are making the twelve main blocks from Jen King-well’s “Gypsy Wife” quilt in two color-ways - one that is mainly Kaffe Fassett fabric and the other mainly Jo Morton fabric. You are welcome to make both versions, but can only receive one free block per month. The fee to join is $32. After the first month, block kits are free if you attend either day and bring a completed block from the pre-

vious month (we have very limited back issues of block kits). There are a couple of “Jo” Finishing Kits left and we will cut a few more of the “Kaffe” - if you want one of either, let us know ASAP.

Club members have so much fun and learn so much during Stitcher’s Garden, that we’re now on Year 5! On the fourth Satur-day each month, we’ll discuss a variety of appliqué techniques, machine feet, and some of the lovely stitches that are on your sewing machine. The monthly demonstra-tions relate to blocks in the wonderful appli-qué quilt called “Stitcher’s Garden”, de-signed by The Stitch Connection, but are

also applicable to a wide variety of other projects you will likely tackle in the future.

The monthly cost is $10, or $100 for a prepaid year, and includes the block pattern for that month. If you recently purchased a Bernina sewing machine from The Quilt Crossing, you can attend for FREE for one year. You can start at any time - we continue to rotate through the twelve blocks. Please remember to register each month - thank you in advance for your courtesy!

If you are new to machine embroidery or want to deepen the bond with your embroi-dery machine, this new embroidery series is the perfect option for you. The finished quilt measures 30” square and classes are lecture/demo. The fee to join is $35; simi-larly to Saturday Sampler, after the first month, block kits are free if you attend and bring your completed blocks from the previ-ous class. We’ll meet every other month

and you’ll typically have 3 blocks to embroider. You’ll receive the de-signs, pieced block instructions (optional kits for the pieced blocks will be available), and embroidery tips and techniques throughout this series. We are also offering a queen-sized embroidered quilt version, both de-signs and fabric kits, so talk to a Bernina Babe to learn all!

Saturday, September 10, 10:30-12:00 Saturday, November 12, 10:30-12:00

This glorious quilt, based on quintessential Amish blocks and color palette, appeals to eve-ryone. The 105” square quilt is made from Mar-cus Brothers Centennial Solids and is designed by Nancy Rink. We first offered it as a Block of the Month, but now are selling complete kits for $209.99.

Nancy Rink’s Amish with a Twist III uses Marcus Brothers solid fabrics and blocks based on traditional Amish quilts for a vibrant look that is true to Amish tradition but is also very contemporary in feel. The ten-month program for this 98” x 107” quilt started in November; kits are available on the 15th of the month and are $22.99 each (back issues are available). Instructions and yardages are given for both the pieced option and the appliqué option. The four appliqué blocks are also available pre-fused and laser-cut for an additional $16.99 each. Simply stunning.

This six-month row quilt is a great way to get your feet wet in the Modern Quilt Movement. We’re using Andover’s Dimples fabric line - they read as solids but give just a little bit more tex-ture and movement to the quilt. The pieces are relatively large so the quilt, which measures 91” x 96”, goes together pretty quickly. Kits are available on the 10th of each month - we started in April but have back issues available. The first

kit is $44.99 and the other five are $32.99.

Page 5: Mark your calendar for Market Party!...area shops and they are terrific. We anticipate that 33 stores across the state will participate - watch the “Idaho Row By Row” FaceBook

Cheryl Gunn, of Waltzing with Bears pattern com-pany, designed this wonderful Block of the Month for us. Our year is over, but we have a few sets of blocks still available - don’t miss out! It features wool appliqué on pieced cotton backgrounds and a variety of embroidery stitches. The Starter Kit is $66.99. Each of the monthly kits are $9.99. What fun!

We’re on Collection 4 of Kim Diehl’s Simple Whatnots Club series and have fabrics ordered for Collection 5. There’s a kit a month for these adorable, quick-to-sew projects of Kim’s design, featur-ing her “Sunday Best” fabric line. In-cluded in the project pattern are extra little snippets and morsels from Kim, such as recipes, sewing tips & tricks, crafty things, and ideas for decorating with quilts. The kit for each month de-

buts on the 2nd Saturday and includes the pattern and fabric for the quilt top and binding. If you were late to the party, we continue to kit Collec-tions 1, 2 & 3 (as fabrics run out, we are substituting other “Kim” fabrics. Simply wonderful!

We are in love with this darling quilt by Cherry Blossom Quilting. Joyce used Moda Grunge fabrics for the blocks that she hand appliquéd - the designer used fusible web, so pick the method you love the most. We first offered it as a Block of the Month, but now are selling complete kits for $199.99. If you’d prefer to pick your own fabrics, the pattern is $44.99.

Bonnie Sullivan, of All Through The Night, designed another purrfectly darling Block of the Month, this time featuring Tuxedo, the cat. We are using Maywood Woolies flannel for the back-ground and felted wool for the appliqués of this 40” x 52” quilt. The twelve-month program is available on the first Saturday of the month - we started in March but have back issues so you can start at any time. The monthly kits, which include the pattern, background fabric, and wool for the appliqués, are $24.99. A Finish-ing Kit, which includes the rest of the fabric for the front and the binding, is $59.99. A Button and Thread Kit is

$23.99. Cute as a kitten!

When we saw the pattern for Jan Patek’s newest block-of-the-month, Hawthorn Ridge, we just knew the backgrounds would be the perfect place to showcase the Downton Abbey “Logos and Labels” collection. The backgrounds are creams and tans (you need to use your imagination a little on the picture to the left - our backgrounds will all be lighter); the rest of the appli-qué quilt uses reds, purples, teals, and blacks from all of the Downton Abbey

collections. The seven-month program started in January so you can easily catch up. The first month is $49.99; the other six months are $19.99 each, available on the first of each month.

What a glorious “bed” of flowers you’ll have after you make this 80” x 96” quilt from Fourth and Sixth Designs. The machine appliqué technique is new and very intriguing and the fabrics are from Island Batiks. If you weren’t able to participate in our Block of the Month for this, we have a few (very few) complete kits available for $229.99. An op-tional Aurifil thread kit is available.

Based on your response, we know you love this Block of the Month program! It uses the English Paper Piecing technique (we’re happy to show you how easy it is - just ask at the counter) for a Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt. Each month, for $4.99, you’ll pick up a packet of 19 pre-cut 3/4” finished hexagon papers and fabrics - enough to make a flower.

We’re using exclusively Jo Morton fabrics. Every few months, we’ll also offer a packet of black fabric hexagons to use as the “path” for your garden. Blocks are ready the fourth Saturday of each month. No need to sign up for this one, but take care - when we sell out of a block, it’s gone. You can start at any time.

This cityscape by Kimberly Rado is such a breath of fresh air! The 54” x 66” quilt is template-pieced so you’ll get a chance to brush up on your skills. If you’ve never used templates before, sign up for Nancy’s class on the technique along with many additional tips and tricks. This 12-month program started on the first Saturday of March, but we’ve cut more kits, so you can catch up quickly. In the first kit, you get the fabric for the first block and a booklet with instructions,

pictures and pockets to hold the templates you’ll receive during the next eleven months. The first kit is $54.99; subsequent kits are $14.99 each.

1 yard of blue toweling (makes a 16” x 32” runner) Red felted wool for baskets and handles (about 9” x 12”)

Gold felted wool for large stars (about 8” x 10”) Blue plaid felted wool for small stars (about 4” x 7”)

Green Felted wool for stems and leaves (about 3” x 9”) Fusible Web (about 1/2 yard)

The sides of the toweling are already hemmed - yay! To finish the ends, press under each end of the towel 1/2”, then 1-1/2” and stitch close to the fold.

Trace the appliqué designs onto the paper side of fusible web (for this project, we used Wonder Under because you can use both high heat and steam to penetrate the wool fibers which helps the fusible web adhere to the base fabric). Following the manufacturer’s instructions, press to the wool fabric and cut out the shapes (you need two bas-kets and handles - one for each end - and six of each of the large and small star flowers). Cut out four leaves and four 1/4” x 9” strips of green (cut two strips in half to use for the four outer flowers and use the two long strips for the center stems - you’ll trim them to size after laying out the designs). Using the picture for reference, position a basket of Star Flowers on each end of the toweling (be sure to tuck about 1/4” of the handle under the basket and 1/4” of the stems under the basket and flowers). Press in place, using steam. Flip over and press again from the back. Stitch with perle cotton, using either a whipstitch or a blanket stitch (we used a whipstitch and Sue Spargo’s Eleganza Pearl Cotton in size 8, colors EZM23 & EZ17).

Quilted Celebrations By Amanda Murphy

This delightful book is full of projects and quilts that celebrate life’s milestone events with our needles and thread.

Each quilt project includes both a front design and a wonderful back design with ideas on personalizing a special message for each lucky quilt recipient, as well as a section entitled "Change It Up" offering additional design ideas. Personalizing the quilts can be done with Fab-rico marking pens, hand or machine embroi-

dery, or my favorite method, Lesley Riley’s transfer artist paper. A full size pullout pattern page is a great bonus.

I liked every single quilt in this book! The animal baby quilt and matching wall art animal blocks are adorable. I can see the piano key strip piecing sets used in “Flora” finding their way into lots of other quilt design ideas. The quilts celebrating a baptism, communion, and Bar or Bat Mitzvahs were modern and elegant. The wavy border idea in “Mazel Tov” was very intriguing. “I Do” is a charming wedding quilt with a simple personal-ized back design. My very favorite quilt in this book is “A Life Together”, which combines a simple design with a wonky log cabin top and bottom border and a fabulous back design. Most poignant is “We Remember”, an uplifting quilt exhibiting strength and caring.

Quilted Celebrations by Amanda Murphy is a sweet and wonderful surprise which will see a lot of use in my celebration quilt making.

Learn to Paper Piece By Nancy Mahoney

Have you always wanted the satisfaction of a precisely pieced quilt block such as a star or flying geese block with perfect points?

Award-winning quilter and inspiring teacher, Nancy Mahoney, explains it all for you in her new book, Learn to Paper Piece.

Nancy does a fantastic job explaining both the fundamentals and intricacies of paper piecing, including information on paper and thread selection, the proper way to set up your work area, and precutting fabric pieces to save time and frustration.

Paper piecing is best learned by doing, and Nancy has a step by step illustrated tutorial for a trial block. Making a mistake is no big deal; Nancy’s got an easy fix.

And then there are the quilts! Each of the projects in this book in-cludes a full-size, color-coded foundation block, an outline drawing of four blocks together, and complete cutting and piecing instructions. I loved the scrappy look of the quilt, “Lobster Stew”, and the fresh and crisp look of the red and white “Gaggling Geese”. “Split Star” is not only a great looking quilt, but this block utilizes Nancy’s unique way of handling odd shapes in paper piecing.

Learn to Paper Piece by Nancy Mahoney is a great primer that I

guarantee you will enjoy and use for years to come.

Don’t forget Boise Basin Quilters Quilt Guild. We meet on the third Thursday of each month (except July & December) at the Church of Christ, 2000 El Dorado Street.

Easy Cat Beds: Looking for an easy way to give to your com-

munity? Make some cute beds for the cat kennels at the Idaho Humane Society. All you have to do is sew two fat quarters of colorful* fabric together on three sides, using a 1/2” seam allowance (you can also use a half yard). Turn right side out and use it to line a small trash can in

your sewing room. When you have pet-safe scraps, like fabric or bat-ting, drop them in the bag. When it’s full, turn under the last seam and stitch it up. Of course, you can always just insert a pillow form instead. Drop it off at The Quilt Crossing, and we’ll see it gets to the shelter. *Cats don’t see color well but potential adopters do, so let’s make them as appealing as possible!
