ELTOC at the Great Glebe Garage Sale

Page 4 Your News

The ELTOC fundraiser at the

Great Glebe Garage Sale on Saturday,

May 25th, turned out to be a great

success. The day was bright and

sunny, and crowds of people were out

and about bargain-hunting. A good

portion of what we had collected was

sold and we have received some tutor

applications from people who learned

about us at the event. We are happy

to report that $1,442 was raised for

ELTOC’s programs.

A big thank you goes to all those

who donated the goods and to all the

volunteers who manned the stands and helped to set up. Well done, everyone!

ELTOC would like to give special thanks to all those students and tutors

By: Anisa Sufi Student Submission: A Letter to my Cousin

Obituary: Geraldine Beaudoin

It is with a heavy heart that we say

goodbye to our friend and tutor, Gerry

Beaudoin, who passed away June 15th,

2013.

Gerry was a tutor with ELTOC for

almost 3 years. Her sense of humour and

easy-going nature will be missed.

Dear cousin,

I live on Caldwell Ave. in the City of Ottawa. I am writing this letter to tell

you some information about my area and describe life here. My neighborhood is

beautiful and nice. We have some stores in our area, for example, Wal-Mart,

Food Basics and Loblaws.

I like this area because it is clean and I like some people who live here. We

have two parks in our area so we go every day to the park in the spring and

summer. Also we have a community centre and gym to do some activities.

However, I do not like the bus service and sometimes we do not feel safe. I

hate the fire alarm because it goes off often and it is too loud. It bothers me

that some people smoke in the elevators. Also, we do not have an Arabian food

store.

Finally, the weather sometimes is nice but sometimes it is too cold. When

we first moved here we hated this area. After a while we loved it and now we are

happy. I think my area is a good place to live.

Goodbye for now. I hope you are well,

Anisa

Helping With Furniture is a volunteer-run charitable organization that

provides gently-used furniture and household goods to families and individuals in

need. In particular, they focus on newcomers to Canada who are living in the

Ottawa area.

Since 2005 they have helped more than 783 families and currently have

more on a waiting list. Most of our families come to us through referrals from

social agencies. They have often fled from conflict and life-threatening situations

and arrive in Canada with little more than hope to sustain them. Those who can

find housing often spend months with little or no furniture.

Contact www.helpingwithfurniture.org for more information.

page has many links to useful ESL

related websites!*
