That joy feeling. It happens sometimes when I least expect it. It rushes

through me, warms me from head to toe, and makes me smile.

Sometimes there’s a reason, and sometimes joy just fills me up when I

least expect it.

In April, my friend Marcy and I were out for a walk. She said “oh, I have

that joy feeling! I have been noticing it more and more lately”. It’s like a

rush of peace, satisfaction, and extreme happiness at the same time. It

seems to be a natural (temporary) euphoric “high”. It’s so nice to know

that other people experience that same sudden rush of joy.

It is my belief that happiness, the precursor to that “joy feeling”, comes

when you surround yourself with the people and activities you love. In

my experience, love has the greatest connection to joy.

Besides certain people, I love the arts. Arts give me goose bumps, colors

can fill me with joy, and I can be at the same museum for hours. And

today, as it has before, music filled me to the brim. I had that joy

reaction, with tears streaming down my face, this time it was just about

the clearest feeling of joy that I had had in a long long time. I was

watching my niece, Lauren, play her violin with the Madrigal Singers

group at NDSU. When I sat down in the auditorium, I read in the

program that the group was going to perform a song by Dolly Parton…

she is one of my heroes (she did write the song Jolene). I was thinking

that she probably didn’t write too many madrigal style songs, but I didn’t

think more about it until my sister pointed out that that was the song

Lauren was going to be accompanying on her violin.

When the song came on, the perfect sound of the voices and violin gave

me goose bumps. Then the words, which were written on the program,

started filling me up and soon tears were dripping down my cheeks,

under my chin and dripping onto my chest. My mouth was open and I

felt like if I moved it would ruin this perfect joy filled moment. The song

words said “it will all be ok, everything will be ok”, which I had been

telling so many friends lately. One friend got a skin cancer diagnosis

this week, last week a friend’s husband got news about his open heart

surgery date. Another friend has a son with serious trouble who is

looking at jail time. I have been telling them all “it’s going to be ok”, but

to hear it in a song today, a song by Dolly Parton, I was so overtaken by

joy and hope that the tears just flowed. The music was goosebumps

perfect, my niece was featured on stage, confidently becoming a young

woman who is going to succeed beyond our greatest hopes for her. And

it’s all going to be ok. Oh, Thank you for the words Dolly Parton.

NSQG Outreach Feb 2018

Welcome to a new year! New patterns, new fabrics, new

tools, new techniques! It is so exciting to see what the

quilting world comes up with next and what comes back

around…I've been quilting long enough to see something

old become new and interesting again, because there are

always new quilters that haven't gone down that road yet.

I encourage our members, along with your new quilting

friends, to hop on board the new Block of the Month with

Jackie hosted by our Education Committee! We can al-

ways learn something new by revisiting techniques we

may have been doing for years.

Our Outreach will still hold our March Workshop. We will

be having fun with Jelly Rolls! We look forward to having

you join us for an afternoon of working with 2 1/2" strips.

Let's see how many tops we can create!

Join us on Saturday, March 3rd. Remember, there is no

charge for participating in our outreach workshops. Bring

your machine, cutting mat, rotary cutter, ruler and basic

supplies. We will have jelly rolls and 2 1/2" strips for you

to work with. We will also have a pattern we will share. If

you have any jelly rolls you would like to contribute to the

cause please feel free to bring them along to share. I will

try to include some cutting instructions in our next news-

letter so you can get a jump on the project.

Looking forward to spending a day listening to the hum of

happy machines and the laughter of happy quilters!

Kudos to everyone for the contributions you are making

toward our outreach cause!

Quilts and Coffee – Our next event will be a trunk show on January 18th with Deedee Menge on Collage Quilting. She will then hold classes on January 19th on Things That Move and January 20th on Animals. Sign up for these classes ends today. Cheri Goertz gave details for this event. Volunteers signed up for bringing treats, helping in the kitchen and the admissions table. Thank you to all who volunteered. Long Range Planning Committee – Pam Peterson held a committee meeting early this morning. The committee determined that ap-proximately three events per year will be held. A sub-committee will be formed to work with publicity. This committee will co-ordinate all forms of publicity from newspaper, Instagram, Face-book to paper posters and handouts.

New Business: Missouri Star Quilting Co. Bus Trip – Chris Letvin announced an exciting event to come September 13-15th, 2018. A bus trip has been arranged with quilt store stops along the way, a Jenny Doan Trunk Show, door prizes and some breakfasts along the way. A Note from the Editor

February! I love February. It’s a month of hope and change. The days are getting longer and spring is on

it’s way. We know it’s at least 2 months away, but you can almost see it peeking around the corner.

I think of months in color. Some are inspired by the

holiday occurring in that month, and with others it’s

the mood I feel. To me February is pink and I start thinking beyond winter.

January has me usually working on unfinished pro-jects or trying to clean out scraps. But in February I find myself picking brighter fabric and looking at pro-jects that are more whimsical. I am ready to pack away the unfinished pieces and promise myself I’ll pick it up later, but now I am in the mood for some-thing bright and cheerful.

February does that to me. Gayle

Raffle Tickets: Alice Mattern presented Sheila Jerik with a gift bag of quilting goodies for selling the most raffle tickets for the quilt show. Member at Large: Judi Loer received one suggestion which will be brought to the Board meeting. Cards are on the tables for new suggestions with a reminder to add your name and phone number in case there are questions about the suggestion.

Monthly Raffle: Diane Mosher conducted a raffle for a charm pack from Quilters Eden at $.50 per ticket with Gail Nunes as the winner.

Door Prizes: Gayle Olufson won the $25 gift card to Faye’s Hen-house.

Announcements: Lita Romanik who is a district court judge has petitions available for signing to allow her to be on the ballot for her position. She would appreciate member’s support for her election. Denise Sevigny tells us there will be a Valley Shop Hop in late April. There will be a quilt show for Summerfest the last full weekend in June and encourages members to submit quilts to be part of the show. Faye’s Henhouse will be closing on May 1st and continuing sales of fabric and stock will occur until then. Toni Poochigian’s husband, Donald, passed away recently. Her ad-dress is 1484 Fallbrook Ave, Clovis, CA 93611. Dawn Santangelo is battling an infection after having a hip replace-ment. You can brighten her day with a card. Her address is 1104 11th Ave SE, E. Grand Forks, MN 56721.

The next Board meeting will be held Tuesday, January 9th at 7 PM at 2002 S 38th St.

Show and Tell: Mary Ann Hentschell and Sheila Jerik conducted show and tell and ended with an amazing ten quilts for outreach done during December by members.

Respectfully submitted, Leslee Smart
