President’s Message

First, I would like to remind you about the upcoming annual Picnic in the Park! This annual picnic

takes the place of the July meeting and is being held on July 12th at Woodland Park. It should be

a really good time and, if the trend from previous years continues, we should hopefully get some

fantastic weather. It's also fun to get out and be able to have full conversations with your dive

buddies without a regulator getting in the way :) If you miss this chance, we have another summer

social event coming up in September - stay tuned!

I find myself writing this on the longest day of the year and thinking about all the fun summer

activities coming up, and planning my next travel destinations. I'm also thinking about the fact that

I have completed my last official board meeting and reflecting on the last couple years working on

the board and being in this amazing club that has come to feel like a second family. I wish the in-

coming board all the best - I'm sure you'll do an amazing job. The nominations committee has

really pulled it together, and this year looks like a really good slate. If you are at all interested in

serving on the board, or just want to be more involved with official club activities, you're always

welcome to reach out to any board member and see how you can assist or attend a board

meeting or two to see if it's something you'd like to do next year!

Lastly, I want to thank you. Your support is what has kept this club going for over 55 years. And

will, hopefully, see it going for another 55. I especially want to thank all of the members that host

dives and other events for helping to introduce and guide newer divers into this "sport", aka

life-long obsession. I've even seen some more seasoned divers learn something new, as this

sport is constantly evolving. Hope to see you on a dive soon!

New Members

Welcome to the Club! You’ve joined one of the most active and social dive clubs in the region.

As you can tell from Meetup we have a steady stream of activities going on for divers of all

experience and skill levels. You are also invited to attend the monthly club meeting. The meeting

is a great opportunity to meet club members in person, hear from interesting speakers, and get

into the swing of things. Details are on the Meetup site.

• First time dive hosts will receive a 5 fill air card from Lighthouse Dive Center.

• If you get 6 Club members to attend you will also earn a 10 fill card from the dive shop of your

choice.

That’s almost $100 for very little work, but lots of fun. Everybody wins!

July Monthly Meeting

Wednesday July 12, 2017 beginning at 5:30 pm

Picnic in the Park at Woodland Park Shelter #4

• No club business! Just potluck dinner, conversation and a relaxing evening with your dive

buddies.

• BRING: Something to grill, something to share and whatever you want to drink.

• Seattle parks do not allow alcohol, so plan accordingly.

• The Club provides plates, forks, plastic cups and napkins.

• Check out the Meetup site for any additional information.

Trouble Getting into Your BCD?

By Sue Bream

Trouble Getting Into Your BCD?

I can think of a few reasons why someone might have trouble getting into their BCD, but one that

I am challenged by is my shoulder flexibility, especially my left shoulder. How about you?

Depending on how your BCD straps are, you might very well encounter a similar issue.

It’s All Connected

While I am specifically referring to shoulder flexibility here, it is not always an isolated issue. In

other words, shoulder tightness, or lack of flexibility, could be related

to tight chest muscles, or neck problems. Here are a couple of

stretches that I feel address the shoulders, but can also help the other

areas.

Three Favorite Shoulder Stretches

This first stretch is pretty much the same position as putting on that

second shoulder strap, which, for me, is my left side. The old “towel”

stretch, as seen here, stretches both shoulders in the front, each

slightly differently. Your goal is to get your two hands as close

together without forcing it. Stretch and hold one side for 10-30

seconds, then switch. Most of you will find a big difference between

the two sides.

The next stretch is the doorway stretch with both arms stretched out to the sides.

Stepping into a doorway, you will feel the stretch across your

chest (pecs) and shoulders. I find it helpful to vary the bend in

your elbows, or, the height of your arms. Remember, a stretch

should never hurt. Find at most, a mild discomfort, and back off

to hold the stretch.

This is a great stretch to do at work, by the way!

5

The third stretch utilizes a stretchy band or exercise tubing. This stretch is great for the front

(chest and shoulders), as well as strengthen-

ing for the upper back.

As seen in the picture, the woman to the right

is stretching her arms out to the sides. You

can also add diagonal stretches, targeting dif-

ferent muscle fibers. Think of it more like a

letter “X”. I would alter one thing here.

I would have your thumbs pointing upward,

which automatically opens up the front of the

shoulder joint.

Wrapping Up

The next time that you get into your BCD, think about these stretches and which one (s) might be

the most helpful to you. Better yet, start integrating them into your routine, and you will find it

easier to get into those straps.

Viz was poor above 65ft, but deeper was 8-10ft. Dive buddy Rich and I saw at least 20 Ruby Reds in the cobble stone below 65ft.

June 8, 2017: Three Tree Point North from 4:30pm to 8:30 pm.

We were diving during the flood. Peak flood of 11ft at 9pm.

We watched as one laid claim to a dead crab.

That alone was worth the price of admission!
