Today we had Lowesby Farm’s first consignment of quality single suckled cattle, 7 to 10 month old Limousin and British Blue Steers topped at £985 and averaged £912.54 over the 63 forward. Next week we have the second consignment of 50 plus Heifers from Lowesby and not to mention the first draw of Robinson Farm’s from Kings Lynn’s 8 to 10 month Simmental and Welsh Black Steers……. not to be missed and catalogues available on Thursday. Better quality forward in the fat cattle today, mainly bigger cattle, 700- 800kg forward which were greeted with keen bidding and topped at 219p/kg for a bullock from Chris Carr of Melton Mowbray. The 6 day rule prevented us from having our usual quality butcher’s section but back for next week. Tom reports an improved entry of hoggets, with a lot of big hoggs coming forward, and benefitting from getting all of the weight at Melton. Some of the London markets look to be resisting the current price, but trade holding up very nicely. Store numbers continue to look good and trade phenomenal. Please continue to let us know if you have some to sell. Lastly the market is hosting a comedy event this Friday in the Tavern at 7pm, part of the Leicester Comedy Festival ‘The Big Weekend’. Admission is £10 and tickets are available in the market office. Tim Webster ALAA, Market Manager

SHEEPSlaughter Sheep (1,663)

A very solid trade throughout – for meat. Weight seemingly not a problem, which is handy as well over half the lambs were 47kg or more. These traded readily at or around the 200p/kg mark, with all weight paid for making this a straight price. Those lambs in the SQQ would be either very nice meat and 205-210 p/kg or would have been better in the stores. No shortage of customers though with 10 buyers today on 15 accounts.A top price per kg of 227p/kg for O V Webster, Ticknall and per head of £112 for R W Barker, Great Ponton.

SQQ 203.02p/kg

Please note – there is a marked deduction for dirty hoggs – please consider belly clipping if hoggs are too dirty.

Cull Ewes (140)

Reports of a fall in trade elsewhere locally did nothing to help numbers, and quality today virtually non-existent. An increased average would reflect a better trade, especially when seeing the sheep on offer. A top price of £102 for RK and KA Cass, Kirby Bellars.

Overall average £61.45

The dizzy heights of previous weeks continue. Some better, nice runs of sheep on offer, with buyers keen off the back of the fat trade, especially for those bigger framed hoggs. A top price of £81 for C Taylor-Border, Ridlington.

Overall Average - £64.81

We have 40 more from the same home entered next week. Please give us notice if you are planning on bringing in lamb ewes so we can get them advertised for you.
