Marker Research Results

The purpose of doing this market research is to find out the target audience, genre and contents for a new music magazine. This is primary research technique done by carrying out a survey emailing to a number of different participants in order to gain their feedback. The data I have collected is both qualitative and quantitative data.

Question 1

Age

15-20

21-25

26-30

30+

This graph shows that the majority of people who answered this survey were between the age of 15-20 years as 70% were this age and only 30% were 30 years and over. Therefore my music magazine’s target audience will be between the ages of 15 and 20 years old although within my magazine I will include different articles/pictures which could appeal to people over the age of 20.

Gender

FemaleMale

This graph shows that 80% of people who I asked were female and 20% were male. Even though the majority of people I asked where females I will make it to appeal to both genders so there is a variety of audience for my magazine.

Education/Occupation

StudentTeacherCall Handler

This graph shows that 77% of the people who I asked were college students. Even though this shows that the main number of participants where college students, I will make my magazine appeal to other people who have different jobs and a wider age range as people in college, tend to vary between 16-19 years old.

What type of music do you prefer?

indie/alternativePopR&BRockClassicalJazzHeavy MetalCountry

This graph shows that the majority of people listen to indie/alternative and pop music. Overall, my genre of magazine will be more associated with both pop music but rock music is also popular so my magazine will have sections of rock music in it.

Where do you go to find bands' news and gig guides?

I don’t

Facebook

Magazines

Music Blos

Band Webpage

Myspace

Twitter

This graph shows that the majority of people I asked find news on bands’ and gig guides on twitter and through magazines. From these findings, in my magazine I will include gig guides for different bands and also feature a page which has different bands’ twitter names and also write tweets which they have written.

Where do you buy your music?

Record Shops

Order Online

Itunes

Burn or private download

Vinyl

This graph shows that the majority of people I asked get their music by burning CD’s or private download but ITunes is also a popular method. From these findings, I will go onto iTunes and look at most downloaded which will give me ideas of which artists I may include within my magazine.

Which is your most prefered magazine?

Q

NME

Kerrang

Billboard

Top of the pops

Rolling Stones

Vibe

This graph shows that the majority of people I asked preferred Q magazine. This suggests to me that the genre and style of my music magazine will be similar to Q magazine as my research shows it is a popular magazine.

How much are you willing to pay for a magazine?

Under £1£1 to £3£4-£6£6+

This graph shows that 70% of the people I asked are willing to pay between £1 and £3 for a music magazine and only 20% of them are willing to pay between £4 and £6. Therefore I will make my music magazine a price between £1-£3 as this seems to be a reasonable price and is most popular price.

How often do you buy music magazines?

Every Day

Once a week

Once a month

Once or twice a year

Hardly ever

Never

This graph shows that 40% of the people I asked hardly ever buy music magazines and 30% never buy them. Because there statistics are so close together and show that the majority of people I asked did not or hardly ever bought music magazines, I will have to ensure that my magazine looks and is interesting so it will attract people who may not really buy music magazines to buy them.

Overall, from the data I have collected from my survey, my genre of magazine will be pop music with sections of rock within in it as this will make the target audience wider and will appeal to the age group of 15+. The layout will be similar to how Q magazine is layed out and make sure it is a reasonable price between £1 and £3.
