Marketing and Communication (E-106) Get a Skill, Get a Job Training Program -- Welding

As a national leader in workforce training, Lansing Community College, once again, offered the acclaimed “Get a Skill, Get a Job” or your money back opportunity – from December 29, 2014 through January 9, 2015, at LCC’s West Campus. This unique hands-on, 2-week training program prepares a skilled workforce to meet the growing employment needs of our community. Participants in the programs learn welding skills—ensuring qualified workers for manufacturing jobs coming to Lansing. LCC works closely with regional partners to meet the needs of our changing community and the growing mid-Michigan economy.

Ninth Annual Cardboard Classic

With snow back on the ground, LCC Radio and the Lansing Parks and Recreation Department will return to the slopes of the Gier Community Center for another Cardboard Classic. The annual event has become a Mid-Michigan favorite and great way for the community to beat the winter blues. Every year, the competition gets bigger, better and faster. The 35+ sled entries in 2014 included a deadly scorpion, rotting zombies, an MSU Spartan chariot, and one monstrous Star Wars Imperial AT-AT Walker. Over 200 spectators and racers made it to last year’s event. This year’s Cardboard Classic takes place Saturday, January 24.

The Ha-Ha Holiday Extravaganza LCC Radio sponsored the “Ha-Ha Holiday Extravaganza” at the Grand Ledge Performing Arts Center. The event closed out the station’s holiday celebrations on December 20 with a live performance featuring the popular vocal group Three Men and a Tenor (3MT). WLNZ’s Coffee Break co-hosts, Jack Robbins and Karen Love were on hand to emcee the show and help with the evening’s festivities. The fun and interactive group played to an enthusiastic crowd of close to 400.

Quality Education (E-102) Lansing Community College Receives Federal MOU from DOD

The College has received official notice that its request for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was approved by the Department of Defense (DOD). The approved MOU grants the College access to enter military bases to provide training to military personnel. Currently, the College is working with personnel at Fort Sam Houston in Texas to offer the Military Medic to Paramedic (MM2P) program to military medics. The opportunity to take college courses while in the military will give students an accelerated track to licensure and employment in the healthcare field upon leaving the military. The MM2P Program is the first credential leading to a registered nurse or physician assistant.

Student Success (E-105) Nurses and EMS Students Graduate Seventy two graduates in the two-year traditional and the second degree accelerated program tracks took part in the Nursing Program’s semi-annual pinning ceremony in Dart Auditorium just before the holiday break.

Dean Margie Clark, Associate Dean Linda Koning, and nursing faculty participated in the ceremony for the graduates. Family and friends congratulated graduates at a reception following the pinning hosted by the Student Nursing Association.

At a separate event, faculty and administrators in the Emergency Medical Services Program held a graduation ceremony honoring 25 graduates from the Emergency Medical Technician EMT Academy. The cohort of EMT students complete a 14 credit, five course program which enables them to receive EMT licensure and go into the workforce. In addition, these graduates have the opportunity to enter into the Paramedic program giving them additional credentials in the emergency medical field.

Strategic Planning Forums

As a member of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the accrediting body for LCC, the College is involved in the HLC’s Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) as a means of continuous improvement and accreditation. The College planned a framework of improvement which is laid out in the Strategic Plan, 2013-16. In the course of working on the strategies, the College surveyed faculty and staff to discover areas where we might make improvements. The survey, conducted by the Higher Education Survey of Employee Engagement (HESEE) will help the College create a roadmap of those areas needing the most attention.

As we continue our progress, we are beginning a student success initiative, Achieving Excellence in Student Learning and Success at Lansing Community College, referred to as “Operation 100%,” an inspiring vision to focus the College on supporting our students.

We are hosting a series of campus-wide discussions for faculty and staff this semester on these important topics.

• February 6 – Strategic Plan Status Update and Operation 100% • February 13 – Operation 100% and Climate Survey Results • February 20 – Operation 100% and Data Informed Decision-making • February 27 – Strategic Plan Projects Years 2 and 3
