RECRUITING BY MAILThe Office of Undergraduate Admissions conducts a number of print campaigns throughout the year. Each is targeted at a key audience and each has a specific goal. For example, high school students are invited to events such as the Spring Open House, while admitted students receive welcome packets filled with compelling reasons to enroll at Wayne State, an invitation to Admitted Student Day and detailed orientation materials.

BE A WARRIOR
at WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY
2015 outreachWhen high school students express early interest in WSU by requesting information or including the WSU code on their ACT, we actively reach out to them in a number of ways. Events such as AP Day allow motivated students to experience campus firsthand, while the One Minute Scholar video series puts WSU faculty into high school classrooms. A key communication piece is the prospective student viewbook, which showcases everything Wayne State has to offer with succinct copy and aspirational photos.

The prospective student viewbook was designed to inform and impress.

RECRUITING EVENT MATERIALSTo help admission counselors make the most of their time at college fairs and other recruiting events, we create attention-grabbing, information-packed materials for their tables. Counselors flip through booklets to illustrate their discussions, then send students off with those details in hand. The academic search poster not only provides key details — such as a list of undergraduate degree programs — but also offers a multitude of reasons why Wayne State is a great choice.
Admission counselors use a series of targeted booklets to tell prospective students about topics such as financial aid and the Irvin D. Reid Honors College.

Fund your futurefinaid.wayne.edu • scholarships.wayne.edu
Affordable? College? Yes. We believe college should be affordable to anyone who’s willing to put in the time and effort.
That’s why even though Wayne State’s tuition is the lowest among Michigan’s research universities, we presented nearly
$38 million in institutional awards to undergraduate students during the 2012-13 academic year. The first step to financial
assistance is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.gov. It’s available beginning January 1,
so file using the WSU federal code 002329 as early as possible (and before our priority deadline of March 31) for maximum
aid consideration. Once you complete the FAFSA and are admitted to WSU, you will receive your award information that may
include federal, state, institutional and private aid in forms of scholarships, grants, college work-study and loans annually.
Do the mathThere is no better investment than the future you. But how much will a Wayne State degree cost you? That answer depends
on several factors, such as how many credits you take and whether you live on campus or commute. The following estimates
can give you an idea.

celebrating EXCELLENCEEach day across campus, members of the Warrior community Aim Higher. We recognize the outstanding work of faculty, staff and students to thank them — and to promote their accomplishments to prospective students and supporters. Among the most popular efforts are the WSYou internal newsletter, the Professors Who Do poster and electronic sign campaign, the Certificate of Warrior Pride peer-to-peer recognition program, and a poster series to make sure President Wilson’s words continue to inspire.
Student Center gets upgradeExciting renovations are being made to the Student Center Building — a major hub of activities and services since 1969. As the university continues to meet the needs of both its commuter students and those living on campus, an expanded and updated facility has become a priority. Of the 197,000 square feet of building area, 95,000 square feet of renovations are underway, stretching from the basement
through the third floor to provide a new food court and dining area, new student activity and organization facilities, and improved retail and recreation options. The building will also be expanded through the conversion of the exterior colonnade on Gullen Mall to interior space, boasting new entrances at each
end of the site. Other exterior improvements include new glazed windows throughout the third floor and further repairs from floors four to seven. The $26.5 million project is expected to be completed by summer 2015.
Former GM exec heads to WSU Hugo DeCampos gave up life as a successful expat in Shanghai
to pursue his lifelong goal of a second career in academia. Now, after a decade as a leading global supply chain executive at GM, DeCampos is beginning his new
life as an assistant professor of global supply chain management in WSU’s School of Business Administration — and he can’t think of a better place to be. “When you look at all the major public research universities in the world, you could make the case that Wayne State researchers and students have the best opportunity to study
global supply chain in the auto industry,” said DeCampos. As one of the School of Business Administration’s newest professors, DeCampos brings a wealth of knowledge about automotive sourcing and deep interest in researching how managing the supply chain can maximize innovation in manufacturing.

Student wins on Jeopardy!“Who is J.R. Ewing?”That was the question College of Engineering biomedical engineering master’s student Varun Shekhar needed to write for his second Jeopardy! win. “I was trailing going into the final round, and the category was ‘TV Characters.’ We needed to identify whose funeral was attended by Mark Cuban, Jerry Jones and Mike Rawlings. Ironically, I had read about Dallas the day before and ended up winning that show.”
Shekhar, who earned his bachelor’s from WSU in 2007 and a juris doctor from the University of Wisconsin Law School last year, has watched Jeopardy! since elementary school. He took the test to appear on the show in early 2013. “I was invited to audition here in Detroit in July. I was in the middle of studying for the bar exam, but decided to take a few days off and review Shakespeare's plays and world capitals instead of court cases and statutes.”
Shekhar, who appeared three times on the show, plans to use his winnings to pay off his student loans. Upon graduation, Shekhar will serve as an associate attorney with the Pittsburgh law firm Babst, Calland, Clements and Zomnir P.C., specializing in environmental law.

Helping students reach their full potential inspired Julie Faust to join Wayne State in 2007. From her first job as an office services clerk in the Law School to her current position as an interim manager in the Student Service Center (SSC), Faust has been instrumental in reaching out to students. “She has done some awesome things,” says Ann Elinski, the SSC’s assistant director. “Under Julie’s leadership, 48,000 outreach calls have been made to new and prospective students. She has trained the staff and mentored all of our part-time students.”The SSC is the university’s one-stop shop, serving the needs of students, parents and anyone interested in Wayne State.Faust, who earned her M.B.A. from WSU, understands the student experience and brings empathy and enthusiasm to the job.“I work with students on a daily basis and get to celebrate their successes with them and troubleshoot their issues when their plans go off course,” she says. “I feel very strongly that every student has value, and it’s my job to offer any support I can.”Aim Higher recognizes WSU associates who excel in their jobs. Professor lays the ground for “green” cement Concrete is second only to water as the most widely used substance on Earth. Unfortunately, its production is one of the single largest contributors of environmentally harmful carbon dioxide emissions. In 2002, Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Hwai-Chung Wu set out to create environmentally friendly cement, aptly named for the city it was created in. According to Professor Wu, Detroit Cement is much better for the environment than traditional cement. “Cement production is tough on the environment because it requires so much heat,” said Wu. “It takes far less heat to create Detroit Cement, meaning about 50 percent less carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere during its production.”In addition to the environmental benefits, Wu’s creation performs better than traditional cement. Its plastic-
like molecular composition means the material has a greater degree of flexibility, which means less cracking — a common issue seen in structures and roadways. Wu’s discovery is moving closer to full-scale commercialization, and the university filed for a patent in 2012.

2014 Word Warriors listLogophiles, rejoice. The WSU Word Warriors recently released its annual list of the year’s top 10 words deserving to be used more often in conversation and prose. The extensive list is composed of submissions to the website. New entries are posted at the Word Warriors’ website — as well as on Twitter and Facebook — each week. The Word Warriors’ 2014 list includes the words arcadian, eldritch, fug, humdinger, lubricious, martinet, mephitic, perfidy, pestiferous and weltschmerz. Definitions of these words, along with examples of their use, are available on the site. “The English language has more words in its lexicon than any
other,” says Jerry Herron, dean of WSU’s Irvin D. Reid Honors College and a member of the website’s editorial board. “By making use of the repertoire available to us, we expand our ability to communicate clearly and help make our world a more interesting place. Bringing these words back into everyday conversation is just another way of broadening our horizons.”To join the fun and possibly resurrect a beloved word, visit wordwarriors.wayne.edu.

BUILDING prideDuring events such as convocation and homecoming, an electric pulse of Warrior pride runs through campus. To keep the community close and enthusiastic throughout the year, we organize events such as Warrior Wednesday, with help from the WSU Street Squad. A recent promotion rewarded people for wearing Wayne State spiritwear and allowed folks to swap shirts from other colleges for something a little more green and gold.

MAKING A SPLASHA few words can make a big impression. That’s why Wayne State signage is such a key endeavor. Whether we’re designing a lightpole flag or a four-story banner, the goal is to identify and impress. WSU also makes a splash among the news media, as PR efforts continue to work. More than 700 stories appeared in major media outlets last year — that’s 23 percent more than two years ago. Take a look at the back of this book for a few examples of how WSU made headlines.

TV and videoThere is perhaps no better way to tell WSU’s story — and capture its spirit — than through entertaining videos and aspirational TV commercials. We’ve populated Wayne State’s YouTube channel with hundreds of clips that quickly make an impression on prospects and influencers. Meanwhile, Aim Higher commercials air on network TV during key times of the year to maximize media dollars.
Wide-ranging videos highlight sports, academics and campus life — often with a sense of humor.

campus PromotionsMaking sure busy students see key messages can be a challenge. That’s why we use a range of formats and venues to catch their eye. For example, the Student Center renovation announcement was splashed on-site and online, while the promotion of a mobile app competition was optimized — appropriately enough — for mobile devices.
Put a better experience into Warriors’ hands.
WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY’SMOBILE APP COMPETITIONUp to $5,000 in cash prizes!
Detroit’s a big place, and exciting things are happening all over campus and across Midtown each day. Your new app could ensure that fellow Warriors never miss a beat.
n Registration deadline — April 4
n Submissions due — May 30
n Winners announced — June 13
This is your chance to help the Wayne State community get the most out of their time here and be rewarded for your technical know-how. Apps will be judged by Detroit-based tech entrepreneurs and experts, which means your work will be seen by potential investors and employers.
This competition is open to all Wayne State students, faculty, staff and alumni. Teams must include at least one current Wayne State undergraduate or graduate student.
For more information, official rules and to register, visit mobileapp.wayne.edu.
Apps may address any topic regarding Wayne State University and include any number of features. Apps may be designed for iOS and/or Android, or may be web-based as long as they are native to a mobile device.

web and digitalAs current and prospective students spend more of their time online, we are communicating with them in ways that resonate with their preferences. By optimizing our websites for mobile devices, we are able to reach more people in more ways. Recently, wayne.edu was completely re-imagined to fit the expectations of those we’re trying to reach. We have consolidated 43 separate websites containing more than 2,500 pages into a single site. With each move, we’ve focused on ease of use for prospective and enrolling students.
The new wayne.edu is optimized to work well on a range of devices.
Since the redesign of wayne.edu, total visits have increased 17.4%, average visit duration has increased 12.3% and mobile visits have increased 104%.
19
Social MediaWayne State has a strong presence on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, where we don’t just speak to students — we interact with them. We keep WSU feeds fresh by updating content daily, and we follow students to stay apprised of pictures and comments about WSU. Best of all, if a student tweets about a problem, we’re often able to offer a real-time solution — such as who they can contact with questions about financial aid or housing.
WSU staffers interact with current and future students on social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

ADS BIG AND SMALLPrint ads capture the attention of readers, surfers, drivers and even downtown Detroit pedestrians. Whether ads appear in targeted publications or in the form of giant freeway billboards, these efforts are designed to grab attention with a few carefully constructed phrases. The current billboard campaign reminds prospective students that Detroit is a unique place to live and learn. Online ads are placed strategically to attract specific audiences. Our newest effort is People Mover signage — cruising above the city now.

Registration PROMOTIONWe take a playful approach to the serious challenge of encouraging students to register for their next semester. For spring/summer, we focused on the fact that students can graduate faster by taking extra classes while at the same time enjoying all that Detroit offers during the warm-weather months. Big-impact building signage, banners and window clings on main campus and throughout the extension centers are strategically timed to greet students as they return from spring break.
