October 21, 2014Good times in store at Smokey Joe’s Café!

The party never stops at Smokey Joe’s Café featuring The Coasters! Enjoy this toe-tapping musical revue when it comes to the Potter Center stage at Jackson College at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.

This Tony Award®-nominated and Grammy Award®-winning salute to legendary songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller is a raise the roof, song-and-dance celebration of some of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest hits. Get ready for songs like “Hound Dog,” “Stand by Me,” “Yakety Yak,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Love Potion #9,” “Fools Fall in Love” and more.

The Coasters are a classic doo-wop group that made its start back in 1955. The group’s early association with Leiber and Stoller prompted a string of good-humored hits that are some of the most entertaining of the original rock ‘n’ roll era. “Yakety Yak” comically addressed the generation gap long before that term was coined, while “Charlie Brown” was a character study of a class clown that featured Will “Dub” Jones’ unforgettable line: “Why’s everybody always pickin’ on me?” By the end of the decade, they’d carved out a legacy for themselves as purveyors of riotously funny rock and roll records with a solid R&B underpinning. Of the nearly 40 songs in the show “Smokey Joe’s Cafe,” eight were specifically written for The Coasters by Leiber and Stoller.

The performance is presented by multi-award winning director/choreographer Chet Walker, who has garnered acclaim onstage in theaters across the globe, in television, film, music video and all commercial media. He is the choreographer of Stephen Schwartz’s “Pippin” now playing on Broadway.

Tickets for Smokey Joe’s Café featuring The Coasters are $45, $40 and $30 and may be purchased by calling the Potter Center Ticket Office at 517.796.8600, or online at www.jccmi.edu/events.

October 21, 2014Thrill to a new kind of extreme circus with 360 Allstars

Enjoy a phenomenal theatrical performance that defines today’s urban circus when Jackson College welcomes the 360 Allstars to the Potter Center, 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.

The 360 Allstars reinvent the traditional circus by presenting contemporary performance styles instead of conventional circus art forms. Replace acrobats with break-dancers, substitute a basketball freestyler in place of a juggler, swap the unicyclist for a BMX flatlander, and throw in a Roue Cyr artist, and the result is a unique revolution of the circus as we know it! It is a celebration of rotation – thus the 360 in the name – creating a one-of-a-kind experience. With music from master musician, Gene Peterson, and live looping, 360 Allstars is as aurally exciting as it is visually astounding. Check out a clip here…http://www.jccmi.edu/events/360allstars.htm.

Featuring celebrated international artists from the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Australia & New Zealand, 360 Allstars will leave you dizzy with excitement! Tickets are 360 Allstars are $30, $26 and $21. Students ages 12 and under receive $6 off ticket price in Section B and C. To purchase tickets, contact the Potter Center Box Office at 517.796.8600, or online atwww.jccmi.edu/events/tickets.

October 2, 2014Consumers Energy donates alternative energy technologies to College

Jackson College is pleased to announce a donation from Consumers Energy for energy-related equipment totaling $27,588.

Consumers Energy has made the donation that includes alternative energy equipment -- a wind turbine, converters and solar panels. The materials come from a Consumers Energy display area that demonstrated how wind and solar energy could be converted to electricity and used to run a series of appliances.

“We are powering Michigan with more energy from renewable sources all the time, and it’s important for us to help the next generation to understand the technology that’s involved,” said Tim Sparks, Consumers Energy’s vice president for energy supply operations. “We’re pleased that we could fill a need for Jackson College, helping to carry out our promise to care for the Michigan communities we serve.”

While the faculty and students in the electrical program as well as students in the Bachelor of Science in Energy Systems Management program continue to propose long-term usage of this equipment, it has been put to immediate use in other ways, said Dean of Arts and Sciences Todd Butler.

Wind Energy, ELT 163, students are already studying the wind turbine, doing maintenance on it and learning how to allow it to interface with the converter units. The solar panels will be used by the Solar Energy, ELT 166, class, who will design projects incorporating the panels.

“Our students are introduced to excellent theory in the classroom; however, they also need the opportunity for hands-on experience with green technology,” Butler said. “The donation of equipment by Consumers Energy allows these students to further contextualize their learning in ways they could not without this generous donation.”
