Adbruf has received con rmation from the British Board of Agrément (BBA) that its Coldgrip product is t for purpose.

The BBA looked at Coldgrip’s technical speci cation, manufacturing controls and performance before granting the approval.

Coldgrip is a cold-applied thermoset resin road surfacing system that provides durable high friction and colour demarcation properties. Its friction qualities are achieved by scattering calcined bauxite aggregate on to the Coldgrip resin while still wet and before curing. That friction, together with colour demarcation, is achieved by using a combination of pigmented resin and colour-coated calcined bauxite aggregates.Stand: A29www.adbruf.com

Visitors to Gulf Traf c can see the latest multi-modal modelling feature on PTV Visum 15 displayed at the company’s stand. As public transport and modal interchanges become increasingly important for city planners, this latest version is able to analyse the demand for Park & Ride facilities along with the required size and location.

Also, to accommodate the need to model and analyse ever-larger road networks and city-wide planning,

the latest version of Vissim has an additional mesoscopic simulation level. This enables rapid simulation of large areas without compromising the ne details.

In addition, a new version of Vissim 8 includes scenario management which, for instance, allows a number of junction designs to be modelled during morning and evening peak periods.Stand: K18 www.ptvgroup.com

International Road Dynamics (IRD) is in celebratory mood here at Gulf Traffi c. The company is a leading supplier of weigh-in-motion systems for data collection and weigh station bypass systems, but IRD also offers a wide range of traffi c products and systems for tolling, bridge protection and security. And it is celebrating - 35 years in business this year and continued success in the Gulf region.

In the past few years, IRD has supplied equipment for 23 weigh stations in Qatar. These systems weigh trucks in motion, capture images of suspected overloaded trucks, and transmit the vehicle information and images to an enforcement facility

The company also recently installed RFID-based access control systems that integrate truck tolling in the region. The Haya wastewater treatment facility in Oman uses IRD’s iToll system for accurate and auditable high-volume toll collection with integrated reporting. Meanwhile, in the UAE, IRD has supplied similar technology for tolling trucks at limestone quarries, while in Saudi Arabia, the company supplies slow speed weigh-in-motion (SSWIM) systems for overload monitoring and enforcement. The SSWIM systems provide information on the axle-by-axle load as well as vehicle class and gross vehicle weight.

At this year’s Gulf Traffi c, IRD is demonstrating Vehicle Information in Motion (VI²M) systems, which use VectorSense tyre sensors.

This new sensor technology provides individual tyre footprint data, offering agencies more accurate vehicle classifi cation and lane position information for traffi c data and toll systems. The system also enables enhanced safety checks, such as detection of under-infl ated tyres, for commercial vehicle screening.Stand E37 www.irdinc.com

SensysGatso is looking beyond its traditional specialisation of xed enforcement of speed and red light violations.

“The next vision for our company is to look beyond enforcement, in line with the Dubai government’s vision of a ‘smart city’,” said Saman Naziri, general manager – Middle East. This could mean offering solutions for problems such as traf c ows that have a direct impact on factors such as noise and pollution, and thus on a city’s ‘livability’.

More immediately, in moving beyond xed enforcement, the group is actively pursuing areas such as in-vehicle enforcement. Such a system has just been sold to the French police, which is installing it in 400 vehicles, and to another, unnamed, MENA-region nation.

The system’s advantage over competitors, said Naziri, was that it used radar to track the speed both of its own vehicle and of the violator, rather than using less accurate GPS to calculate the seed

of the vehicle in which it was mounted.“The trend we’re seeing is that the end customer

wants to make people feel that wherever they are and whatever they are doing, they can be caught.”

Another facet of this trend was the new Alutower enforcement columns currently being trialled on Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road.

As well as using a ‘dual-base’ system that could detect speeders heading in both directions with its RS242 multi-tracking radar that could cover six lanes and detect violations such as tailgating and using the hard shoulder, its built-in cameras gave 30 days of permanent video surveillance. This was a useful measure to improve security, he said.

• SensysGatso yesterday established its new regional of ce in Dubai Airport Free Zone. The of ce will service and repair equipment, as well as offering faster support for the group’s distributors in the region.Stand: E28www.sensysgatso.com

SensysGatso seeks to expand

Q-Free is demonstrating its ability to lift more information from licence plates to help countries boost security.

The Dutch company, which has had several contracts for ANPR equipment in the region from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain, has provided Dubai with ANPR information for tolling purposes for some years. However, the UAE asked if Q-Free could supply additional information for security purposes and the expanded system has gone live this year.

A combination of improved imagery and fuller capture of all information on licence plates, rather than just the vehicle’s registration number, means that Q-Free can now identify individual emirates within the UAE and distinguish between taxis, private, commercial and offi cial vehicles, by focusing on the differently-coloured bands at the top of some licence plates.

The system can also cope with the multitude of different licence plate designs within the UAE.

The other major difference in Q-Free’s service is that it can now host the service in the cloud for processing. Clients upload licence plate images and receive back the necessary information on them.

Clients can still do this themselves, with Q-Free happy to support them, but it can now offer them the cloud option, which means its customers need not buy, operate and maintain the necessary servers. Stand: F29www.q-free.com

Enforcement system provider Stalker Radar is showing the latest updates to its established Podar system, the Podar SE-1. The system has always used Doppler radar to detect the vehicle’s speed and is tted with a camera to provide evidence of an offence, and now there is built-in ANPR recognition software and a back-of ce system to process violations.

The resulting system is said to be a turn-key solution for both speed and red-light enforcement including violation processing, printing, mailing and payment collection. It can track up to 32 vehicles travelling in both directions on a multi-lane road and provides ‘Smart Evidence’ images with all the necessary details for a prosecution.

According to the company, in most cases an end-to-end solution can be achieved and the scope can be expanded to include secondary violations such as mobile phone use and seatbelt compliance. Data gathered by the SE-1 can also be processed by numerous back-end systems.Stand: F1www.StalkerRadar.com

INTERVIEW

Bridge revolution

10 Dailynews | Gulf Traffi c 2015 For all the latest industry news | www.itsinternational.com

QI know it is not accurate to call a fi bre reinforced polymer bridge a

plastic bridge, but essentially that is what you were talking about?

ATo call something made of this technology “plastic” is very wide of the

mark because advanced composite materials are transforming the design of everything from aircraft to Formula 1 racing cars. In terms of bridge construction what we are building and testing is far removed from concrete and steel, the dominant bridge-building materials for more than a century.

It’s incredibly exciting that we are beginning a major revolution in bridge construction although, in principle, there is nothing new in the idea of using composites in construction. Wattle and daub – a mixture of mud and straw – was successfully used as a building material for centuries. Modern composites are based on the same principle: different materials are combined to create a new one with unique mechanical properties. In the case of FRP, the materials involved are high-strength glass, carbon or aramid fi bres and strong polymer resins.

QFor people not familiar with bridge-building or these advanced

new composite materials, are we talk-ing about lightweight structures, say for pedestrians only, or can you design and build an FRP road bridge that is capable of carrying normal traffi c - cars and trucks?

AI can answer that question by telling you that a few weeks ago we learned

that the Frampton Cotterell Bridge in Gloucestershire, England, has been shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award. Installed last year, it spans the River Frome and handles a full HGV (heavy goods vehicle) loading. The fi rst such bridge in the UK, it replaced an existing concrete and steel structure that had become damaged by corrosion.

QGiven that an FRP structure can do the job of more traditional materi-

als, what are the main benefi ts and advantages?

AFRP structures offer a number of decisive operational benefi ts. Speed of

construction is one of them. If you have to close a road or railway line to install a bridge, it costs signifi cant amounts of money. Because FRP is lighter than concrete and steel, you can install it much more quickly and you can get a cost saving that way. Moreover, the low weight of FRP bridge elements also means that transporta-tion to site is less expensive – and greener – than it is with conventional bridges. In addition, the load on existing abutments is reduced.

If we are replacing an existing deck with a new FRP element, we know it will be lighter overall, so less detailed work is required to prove the supporting structure. And, if we take the Frampton Cotterell Bridge as an example, the FRP replacement is light, meaning it could be installed in about half the time of a conventional bridge deck. Importantly, its corrosion and frost-resisting properties mean maintenance costs could be up to 50 per cent lower.

QJust to clarify, when you say “speed of installation”, that

means these FRP elements and bridges are built off-site?

AThat’s correct. With FRP, the bulk of bridge deck construction is carried out

in the factory. Off-site manufacture (OSM) means it’s possible to control the quality of construction closely – something that is not always easily achieved with conventional materials assembled in the fi eld.

FRP has the advantage of being easy to mould and this, too, offers benefi ts. At a practical level, it’s possible to build-in access channels for cables and pipework right from the start – eliminating the need to dig up the road. Mouldability also opens up new aesthetic possibilities and the scope for iconic designs could be signifi cant.

QIn terms of the Gulf Region, do you see FRP bridges taking off?

Yes absolutely. FRP bridges provide high resistance to corrosive environments - a fundamental requirement in the Middle East. The plastics for FRP are derived from crude oil, which is readily available in this region, so could favourably impact construction costs.

There are examples of use of FRP in the Middle East such as the Mataf Elevated Walkway in Mecca. A total of 400 tons of carbon fi bre composites were used which makes it the largest carbon fi bre reinforced civil structure in the world.

The main challenge however is to get all the Government agencies, professionals and constructors to adopt the new technology, which will be a key to the success of the FRP bridges in the Middle East.

On Monday, during the Bridges, Tunnels and Structure Projects Conference, Gajanan Chaudhari, Head of Bridges, Atkins, UAE, made a thought-provoking and exciting ‘tomorrow’s world’ presentation on “FRP composites in bridge construction”. Here, he outlines some of the key aspects that make this technology so exciting.

Gulf Traffi c grows againGulf Traffi c refl ected the standing it has achieved in the region when it was inaugurated yesterday by His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in the presence of other dignitaries including His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) and CEO of Dubai World Trade Centre.

A main growth area of this 12th edition of Gulf Traffi c is the number of free-

to-attend conferences which has seen industry leaders from across the globe attend the event to discuss game-changing projects, plans and future technologies in transport and traffi c.

Today’s conference agenda is set to tackle how solutions can present new opportunities by using the technologies with a ‘smart’ approach, while tomorrow will give an concentrate on smart parking.

The important commercial side of Gulf Traffi c has also grown this year with more exhibitors and participants from more

countries around the world taking part. Indeed, the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport is here for the fi rst time and visitor numbers are up 11%.

For the fi rst time ever, Gulf Traffi c is running a hosted buyer programme, set to connect key buyers from across the Middle East with participating exhibitors, both regionally and internationally. Another inaugural feature this year is the dealer/distributor lounge, where visitors can conduct meetings in a quiet setting away from the busy show fl oor.

Vitronic's towering successVisitors to Gulf Traffi c will most likely have seen Vitronic products before they even entered the Convention Centre. The enforcement market leader was recently chosen to replace all radar speed cameras on Dubai’s main traffi c artery, the six-lane Sheikh Zayed Road, with PoliScan LIDAR systems. The systems, also nicknamed Al Burj (The Tower) because of their iconic pillar shape, simultaneously enforce multiple vehicles across all lanes and, in addition to speeding, can detect other violations such as heavy goods vehicles driving outside designated times or using lanes reserved for passenger cars.

Besides Al Burj, which can be seen at

the Vitronic booth, the company is also presenting two new developments for the fi rst time in the region. The Enforcement Trailer is an autonomous system that enables authorities to automatically enforce at remote locations with no electrical infrastructure.

The armoured and bulletproof trailer has an independent power supply based on high-performance batteries and can operate for at least fi ve days without any human intervention, leading to a signifi cant increase in effi ciency. The Enforcement Trailer is also ideally suited for use at temporary road hazards like construction sites or at locations where

speed enforcement with mobile speed systems is impossible because of the risk to the operator.

The other new product from Vitronic is a gantry-based multipurpose installation that combines average and spot speed enforcement with ANPR applications and provides information for traffi c management systems. The installation is already in use in the automated enforcement management network that Vitronic is building in Abu Dhabi, with several hundred systems plus monitoring and case processing software.Stand H20 www.vitronic.com

MRS displays a model of parking effi ciency Visitors to the Bond Traffi c stand can see a model of a world record holding parking system installed by Mag Royal Solutions (MRS) at the Emirates Financial Towers. According to MRS chief technical offi cer Rabih Aghnatios (pictured), other designs would require at least double the volume to house the 1,191 vehicles.

At the entry/exit gates, drivers park on a pallet before exiting, locking the car and logging their details onto the system. The

pallet is then moved onto a transporter where it is rotated 180° and put into an elevator that lifts it to the appropriate fl oor where a second transporter moves it into the allocated parking slot.

The process is reversed (except for the rotation) when retrieving the vehicle – a process that takes between three and four minutes once the parking fee has been paid. Each entry/exit gates can accommodate 25 cars per hour. According

to Aghnatios, offi ce buildings pose the greatest access/egress problem (as everybody arrives and departs around the same time) requiring 12 gates for 1,000 cars to keep waiting times to an acceptable level.

He said a vehicle space requires 20m² and the height is limited to 20 stories while the maximum footprint is 42 x 200 metres. Stand: C10www.magrs.com
