DESCRIPTION
w/purpose is a public design studio focused on cities and their future. For us this means not just buildings, but the spaces between two buildings; their neighborhoods; streetscapes; and where people shop or spend their time. We are a studio that explores the relationship between those elements, their meaning, and how to make them better. For the past decade, Wil D. Marquez has been developing a unique product in architecture and urban design for clients who believe that good design can make a difference in both their lives and in the lives of others. His expertise lies in finding plausible, yet nontraditional, solutions for homes, developments, streetscapes, retail centers, and installations through a collaborative practice he defines as “creative play”- a unique process of collaborative programming meets big picture thinking that he believes is the basis for how we make the decisions needed to realize a project’s full potential. For Marquez, the issue lies in the initial planning and programming phases which he recognized invites the least amount of stakeholders and often does little to extract most of the complex issues important to clients.
His animated lectures about cities, robots, streets, fabrication, and architecture can only be described as colorful and insightful. He has lectured on this unique process at multiple universities, conferences, and events, including La Universidad de Palermo in Buenos Aires, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and several regional American Institute of Architects (AIA) events and exhibitions since 2005.
His efforts on architecture and design has been featured in The Indianapolis Star, TodoObra (Argentina), The NorthWest Indiana Times, Indianapolis HOME, and through multiple blogs and small publications. Marquez’s completed and conceptual works can be seen in projects such as Re-Connect Devington, Douglas Point Lofts, 22 on Delaware, Sonrisa Dental Spa, South Street Transportation Redevelopment, and numerous other urban developments and art installations throughout Indiana and abroad.
Marquez believes it simply comes down to this, to be competitive, you have to be more creative: A philosophy he believes centers around continuously seeking unique solutions for a world that is constantly undergoing massive change. It is under these conditions that he offers both an inherent value and performance based deliverable that is dependent on “process” as the means to solving issues regarding economy, ecology, aesthetics, governance, culture, and infrastructure.
