Compared to last month: Holstein steers weighing under 300 lbstraded 38.00 – 39.00 higher; 300 – 450 lbs traded mostly 27.00 – 32.00 higher; 450 – 600 lbs traded mostly 15.00 – 19.00 higher; over 600 lbs traded mostly steady to 4.00 higher on a very thin test. Trading activity was moderate on very good buyer demand. The supply consisted of about 85% Holstein steers with the balance being mostly cross bred steers, Holstein heifers and Jersey steers. About 18% of the supply weighed over 600 lbs. Next Holstein feeder cattle sale will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2014.

STATE AND FEDERAL REPORTING Compared to last week: Slaughter lambs and feeder lambs had no test. Slaughter ewes traded 4.00 – 9.00 higher. Slaughter kids traded 2.00 – 13.00 higher. Slaughter nannies traded 5.00 – 12.00 higher. Traded activity was moderate on moderate buyer demand. In the sheep supply 46% slaughter lambs, 29% feeder lambs, 24% slaughter ewes and bucks with the balance being replacement ewes. The goat supply consisted of 80% slaughter kids, 16% slaughter nannies, 4% slaughter billies and wethers. Sheep and lambs sold on a per cwt basis and goats sold on a per head basis unless otherwise noted.

Wednesday, August 6, 2014Over 500 head of slaughter cattle were sold today, with the market continuing the bullish on bulls; showing an increase of $10 in prices from last week. The top selling bull brought $162.50 and the top 56 head of bulls all bringing over $140.00. Beef slaughter cows were steady today with lean beef cows ranging $127.50-133.00. Fat beef cows averaged $135.00. Holstein slaughter cows brought $1-2 lower overall, however the quality in comparison to last week was also lower. Lean Holstein slaughter cows ranged $115.50-125.00, with fat Holsteins ranging $119.00-127.00. Nice sets of Holstein heifers from Gill and Loveland showed very strong, bringing 138.50-154.00. A consigner out of Ft. Lupton topped the feeder market with quality black and red steers and heifers ranging from 442-695#.
