BOE member Bernardi resigns from positionBy SHANNON CAULFIELDThe Marlton Sun

Evesham Township Board ofEducation member RosemaryBernardi resigned from her posi-tion effective immediately amidthe anti-Semitic comments she re-cently made.

According to school boardpresident Sandy Student, Bernar-di resigned from her position on

the Evesham Township SchoolBoard, and also from her positionas vice president of the New Jer-sey School Boards Association.

When a member of a civic orpolitical organization is the focusrather than a contributor to anorganization, its wrong, Studentsaid. I think Mrs. Bernardi knewthat and thats why she steppeddown.

    Student noted Bernardi was

not subject to the same discipli-nary action as children in the dis-trict, and needed to be a rolemodel for the children.

She needed to step down, Stu-dent said.

When asked for a comment,Bernardi responded with the res-ignation letters she submitted tothe Evesham Township SchoolDistrict and the New JerseySchool Boards Association.

"It is with regret that I am sub-mitting my resignation from Eve-sham Township School Districteffective immediately. This localissue has become a distraction forthe board to fulfill its mission,"Bernardi said in a statement tothe board. "There is an immediateneed to shift the focus back ontothe 4,700 public school childrenthat we serve."

On June 11, the township coun-

cil held a meeting, passing a reso-lution condemning her actionsand requesting she step downfrom her position.

The councils resolution notedit had no jurisdiction or authorityto take action, but it urged ap-propriate body and officials totake such action necessary to cen-sure, discipline or otherwise

If the only exposure you had to

New Jersey was what others said

or wrote about it, youd think it

was the worst place on the planet.

Scan the Internet just this week, and

    youd find these stories:

Our governor called the authors of

a League of Municipalities report ontax reform corrupt and labeled the

    groups leader as a whiner.

A Little League coach in Newark

plead guilty in court to assaulting an

umpire because he wouldnt call a

    game due to darkness.

A new report says that the Garden

State is the most expensive state to get

    your car repaired.

A great white shark circled a boat

off the coast (not that this has much to

    do with Jersey).

The greater public perception ofNew Jersey is that it is a crowded, ex-

pensive state full of loud, obnoxious

    people (thanks Real Housewives and

Jersey Shore) who think they are

better than everyone else (well, arent

we?). Our governor fits that mold per-

fectly, even as he is being mentioned as

a potential candidate for president of

the United States when the next elec-

    tion comes around.

    Heck, of the three professional

sports teams that are located in the

state, only one (the Devils) are

    proud enough to label themselves

from New Jersey. The other two (the

Giants and Jets) act like theyre from

    New York.

So why does anyone still live here?

Why are we doing this to ourselves?

Because, for those of us who livehere, who grew up here and are rais-

ing families here, we know the good-

ness that is here in New Jersey, even if

we recognize the bad. We love our

beaches, our mountains and our easy

access to major cities. We are proud of

our small, quaint towns, our history

and our top-notch schools, even if we

pay exhorbitant prices to be here.

We are New Jersey, and well always

    be New Jersey.

And we dont care what you think.

What are we still doing here? With all the negativity about the state, why does anyone live in N.J.?

    Your thoughts

Are you proud to be a New Jerseyan?Let us know why you choose to call theGarden State your home...and also whatyoud like to see improve.

Wrestling coach wants to reverse decisionon removing sport from summer olympics

Assemblyman Chris Brown, aformer high school wrestler and avolunteer youth wrestling coach,is introducing a resolution callingfor the International OlympicCommittee to reverse its decisionto remove the sport from the glob-al athletic event beginning withthe 2020 summer games.

The entire wrestling commu-nity is stunned by the IOC's deci-sion to eliminate one of the firstsports contested in the originalOlympiads, Brown said. Regret-fully, the committee has ignored

the history, the integrity and thetremendous character-buildingaspects of the sport, instead bow-ing to political and personal inter-ests to retain 'questionable' sportslike the modern pentathlon andbadminton. Brown has draftedan Assembly resolution urgingthe IOC to overturn this decision.

This is a devastating blow tothe sport, at a time when it is en-

    joying a tremendous resurgence

in popularity, in this country andaround the globe, Brown said. Ihave opened an online petition onmy legislative web site, and I willpersonally take the names whosigns on with me to Trenton tohelp push this resolution throughand have our voices heard.

Brown is the father of foursons, three wrestlers and a new-born future-wrestler. Oldest sonBrian competes for Marlton Mid-dle School, 8-year-old Evan is theSouth Jersey state champion inhis class, and Jason, 6, finished

fourth in the South Jersey Stateswhile wrestling in the 8-year-oldfield.

Wrestling is the greatest char-acter-building sport in the world.Competitors benefit from the gru-eling physical demands, developincredible mental toughness andresilience, and the lessons of per-sonal responsibility and account-ability are reinforced every timethe wrestler takes the mat. Partic-

ipation in any competition is ben-eficial to an individual's develop-ment, but the unique challengesof wrestling are unrivaled by anyother sport, Olympic-recognizedor not.

The business world appreci-ates the leadership qualities pro-duced by wrestling, and a surveyof Fortune 500 CEOs by Forbesfound that half of them developedtheir skills and tenacity on themat as a youth or high schoolwrestler. The success of formerwrestlers like Warren Buffet, Bill

Gates and Sen. John McCain helpexplain why military organiza-tions including the Navy Seals ac-tively seek out individuals with abackground in our sport, saidBrown, who began wrestling insecond grade and continuedthrough high school.

Brown is urging residents tosign on to his petition, which is ac-cessible online atwww.AddiegoRudderBrown.com.

    With the county budget $43.6

million less than it was in 2008and the combined county proper-ty tax levy down $25.2 millionsince 2009, the respected PewCharitable Trust creditedBurlington County with havingthe lowest comparable, residen-tial tax burden in the Philadel-phia region in a study last year.

Recently, the Burlington Coun-ty Freeholders introduced abudget plan aimed at earningthat distinction again by reduc-

ing the total taxes needed to runall county government programsby $7.7 million while cutting thegeneral operating budget bymore than $15 million.

The move is expected to con-tinue a positive trend that hasseen the county share of an aver-age residents total tax bill steadi-ly drop from 19 percent in 2007 to15.8 percent last year.

With the fallout from the re-cession still impacting so manymiddle-class homeowners and

job seekers, our goal was to againdo more with less.

We set out to continue provid-ing property tax relief, while pro-tecting programs and servicesour residents value, said Free-holder Director Joe Donnelly, who first took office in 2008.

Facing county tax ratables(property values) that plummet-ed another $1.9 billion, resultingin a general revenue loss of $7.6million, the freeholders analyzed

the three budgets of countygovernment that each operate offa separate and distinct dedicatedtax general operations, the li-brary system, and the open spaceand historic preservation pro-grams in an effort ease the over-all burden on property taxpayers.

We came to the conclusionthat given the $48 million alreadybanked in our land preservationfund, the 4-cent open space taxcould be safely reduced to 1.5cents without any negative im-

pact on our efforts to save land, maintain our parks, or continueoperation of our popular munici-pal recreation grant program,Donnelly said.

    Donnelly reported that the

    overall county property tax rate

will remain unchanged. That will be accomplished via

a decrease in the dedicated OpenSpace tax of 2.5 cents that willoffset a corresponding increasein the tax rate for the regular op-erating budget.

The Burlington County librarysystem tax rate will remain flatfor this year.

Donnelly said that he was con-fident that the dedicated openspace fund would not only cover

existing programs, but also washealthy enough to fund threemajor initiatives: the plannedUnderground Railroad Museum

    at Historic Smithville Park; the

conversion of Mount Holly Li-brary into the countys first gen-eral history museum; and the re-cent partnership with the state,Westampton Township and otherorganizations to keep RancocasNature Center in operation.

We are hopeful that the eco-nomic recovery will pick up somesteam this year.

Regardless we remain com-mitted to employing every fiscal-ly responsible tool available to

protect our property taxpayersand keep more of their ownmoney where it belongs in theirown pockets, Donnelly said.

show its rejection and disap-proval of such statements.

Additionally, it advocated forresidents to celebrate cultural di-versity for which EveshamTownship is known.

I recognize that categorizingindividuals on the basis of theirreligion, race, gender or sexual

orientation has no place in our so-ciety, and most especially in ourpublic discourse, Bernardi saidin an email when asked about the

    resolution. I express my heart-

felt apology to the people of Eve-sham Township for my remarksat the school board meeting.

Its an excellent day for thetown. We can move forward andfocus on the school district andnot this issue, Mayor RandyBrown said. She did the rightthing so many people asked her todo.

Brown said the issue has over-shadowed numerous positiveevents in the community, includ-

ing the reopening of MarltonPlayground and Relay for Life, which raised more than $100,000.

    We continue winning acco-

lades from the state for all the

good things we do [in this town]and this was not a good thing,Student said.

The issue originated when, during public comment at a Mayboard of education meeting, par-ents Lisa and Marc Cohen askedthe board to consider changingthe first day of school from Fri-day, Sept. 6 to Monday, Sept. 9 toavoid having their children be ab-sent on the first day of school dueto the Jewish holiday Rosh

Hashanah. The board admitted an over-sight, Marc said in a letter to theeditor. This was about a percent-age of the students in Marltonmissing the first day of school. Not a religious reason.

The board voted to change thedate during the May 23 meeting.Upon passing it, according toCohen, Bernardi made numeroushurtful and anti-Semitic com-ments.

    "We could start school on

Thursday the first day of RoshHashanah I don't care. It is up tothe parents to keep their kidshome, all seven or eight Jews wholive in our district, Cohen said, quoting Bernardi in his letter."There are 4,000 kids in the dis-trict, and we have to change thestart date for those few children."

Additionally, Bernardi washeard at the end of the meetingsaying, "anyone who would like torun for the board of education, there are three seats up and thereare five Jews on the board," ac-cording to Cohen.

At last weeks council meeting, residents supported Browns posi-tion on the matter includingboard members who attended themeeting.

I commend the council forstepping in, for doing their joband having this resolution, board member Kevin Stone said.

Before I was a councilman, Iwas a 44-year resident of Eve-

sham, said councilman Bob Di-Enna choking back tears at themeeting. We cannot be tolerantof these words and actions ofanyone in the public forum, letalone a public official.
