At the museum, visitors can purchase the museum catalog (available exclusively at the museum) and the book La Città di Ghiaccio (“The City of Ice”) by M. Fornaro, G. Rotasso and M. Bartoli. Visit the small Italian fortress of Punta Serauta and the sacred area, just 5 minutes’ walk from the museum (gloves, helmet, rope and carabineer recommended). Short stretches of via ferrata (hiking route with cables), tunnels, trenches, walkways and military emplacements. Length of visit: 12 hours. Eat lunch at the self-service restaurant near the museum with a panoramic view of the Dolomites and seating for 120 guests. Ride the cable car to the Punta Rocca station (3,265 m), where the panoramic terrace and the grotto chapel with the statue of the Madonna blessed by His Holiness Pope John Paul II are worth a visit. SOTTOGUDA (Rocca Pietore) Visit the Delcroix Multimedia Room Multimedia exhibit on the Great War in Sottoguda, a picturesque mountain village located at the foot of the Marmolada. Modern and interactive systems, including touch screens, allow visitors to learn about the main events in the war fought on the Marmolada. On the floor, a three-dimensional model depicts the entire area: Marmolada, Passo Fedaia, Passo Padon, Sottoguda, Rocca Pietore – the Great War battle locations at the foot of the “Queen of the Dolomites.” The Delcroix room is also an excellent learning space for children. Opening hours: In July and August, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Thursdays also 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Ample parking. Free admission.

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO

Arrive in Cortina d’Ampezzo and check in at four-star

hotel with breakfast.

Take a guided tour of the Helmut Ullrich Astronomical Observatory (Col Drusciè) Inside the observatory, situated at 1,780 meters, are a Newton telescope with a diameter of 50 centimeters and an 11-inch Schmidt Cassegrain Celestron that the scientists use primarily to study comets and to observe galaxies in search of supernovae. About 30 supernovae have already been discovered here, along with a small planet, christened “Cortina d’Ampezzo.” Open by appointment. Special rates for groups (max. 30 participants).

Eat dinner at the panoramic restaurant Col Drusciè (1,778 m) The restaurant is located inside the Col Drusciè rifugio, a structure built with the greatest respect for the environment and in harmony with the unspoiled natural landscape around it. The simple and elegant wooden dining room is furnished in the typical Ampezzo mountain style. The service is impeccable and the gracious staff members are always attentive to their guests’ needs and special requests. Second Day – Morning

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO

Ride the Freccia nel Cielo cable car to the highest peak of Cortina d’Ampezzo, at 3,244 meters elevation. At Cima Tofana, a large terrace provides one of the most spectacular views in the Dolomites – a simply breathtaking panorama. Return by cable car to the first section of the Freccia nel Cielo cable car, Col Drusciè, the starting point for two interesting themed trails that are suitable for all ages. Sentiero dei Pianeti (Path of the Planets) An easy walk of about 1 kilometer between Piè Tofana and Col Drusciè that offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the solar system and its planets. Every step corresponds to

10 million kilometers in the solar system, and along the route are signboards with photos of the various planets and the sun, arranged to reflect the scale of their actual position in the sky. Time required: 30 minutes. Sentiero dell’Universo (Path of the Universe) A simple path in the woods, about 600 meters long, that allows visitors to symbolically travel through the entire universe, both in space and in time. Ten informational panels illustrate the key characteristics of stars, nebulae, clusters and galaxies along an imaginary journey from the Big Bang, the creation of the universe, to today, that is, the sun, located at the observatory. Free time to visit the town and shop in the center. Adventure Park – Adrenalin Center Cortina For the brave souls who want to feel the rush of adrenaline while suspended between trees. Routes are set up for adults, teenagers and children, with 84 different transfers between one tree and the next using pulleys, rope bridges, cables and nets, all in complete safety and with utmost respect for nature.

SOTTOGUDA (Rocca Pietore)

Travel by tourist train from Malga Ciapela through the famous Serrai di Sottoguda, a striking natural gorge about 2 kilometers long, carved into the limestone over the course of millennia by the water of the Pettorina stream. A unique sight. After about a 15-minute ride the train will arrive in the picturesque town of Sottoguda. Train tickets: Full price: one-way €3.50, round-trip €5.50 Children: one-way €2.00, round-trip €3.00 Discounts for groups of 10 or more persons.

Operating hours: 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Service is continuous during these times. Those who wish can reach Sottoguda on foot (30 minutes) or by car (2 minutes from Malga Ciapela).

Visit the artisan workshops of Sottoguda, where skilled hands transform iron and wood into truly unique objects. Guided tours and demonstrations by appointment. La Fosina Production and sale of handcrafted items in wrought iron. The art developed as craftsmen manufactured tools for woodsmen and farmers and then specialized in the production of ornamental objects and decor that are unique in their originality and detailing. Second Day – Morning

PASSO FALZAREGO Open Air Museum of the 5 Torri Visit the trenches in the 5 Torri area, where the mountain artillery unit had its headquarters during World War I. The batteries of cannons trained on the Austrian emplacements on Lagazuoi and the Tre Sassi fort were positioned here. The museum area is located among the green meadows at the base of the 5 Torri and can be reached on foot via easy trails accessible even to children or by chairlift. Various routes take visitors to the defensive trenches, faithfully reconstructed based on historical documents and sketches, and to the Italian command center. Museum displays have been set up at various points, with weapons and objects from the soldiers’ daily life, while informational signs describe the events of the Great War. Recommended routes: 1. Sentiero delle Postazioni (Emplacement Trail) The route follows the original walkways and trenches, leading visitors to the reconstructed artillery emplacement, to the observation posts overlooking the front and to the artillery command center. It is possible to complete the route in 30 minutes, walking on easy trails and enjoying an exceptional panorama. Time required: 30 minutes.

2. Giro delle Torri (Loop of the Towers) This trail continues the previous path, taking visitors to the lower trench, turning behind the Torri where the view to Cortina opens up. From here the walk continues to the Rifugio Cinque Torri, once the headquarters of the Reggio Brigade command and where Victor Emmanuel III stayed when visiting the front, and finally the anti-aircraft artillery position before returning to the chairlift station. Time required: 2 hours. Ample parking at the base of the chairlift. There are several options for lunch in the area.

Mountain lovers can immerse themselves in the magic of the Tofana with the Freccia nel Cielo cable car. The first section goes to Col Drusciè (1,778 m), the second to Ra Valles (2,470 m) and the third to Cima Tofana (3,244 m), the highest peak of Cortina d’Ampezzo.
