Dear Member Welcome to another season of patrolling at Maroubra Beach. This patrol handbook will provide you with all of the significant dates for the upcoming season. Included in this handbook is the patrol roster and proficiency calendar. The roster will also be posted on maroubraslsc.com.au along with education courses and other club events. The club is aware of the shortened period between patrols during the Christmas holiday period so please make sure if you are going away that you find a substitute for any patrol that you may miss. We encourage all members when finding a substitute for a patrol that you ensure a patrol contract is signed by both parties. Alternatively, ensure you have a screen shot or are able to provide evidence for any swap agreement via message or Facebook and that the intentions of both individuals are clear. This will protect your attendance record if your substitute does not turn up.

The club recognises that members often have many conflicting commitments for their time and may find themselves unable to get a substitute on short notice. The Lifesaving Committee has added rule 6 below. Members who wish to check their patrol record can log into Lifesaving Online via the SLSA Members Portal https://portal.sls.com.au/wps/portal/member/public/login

- Surf Rescue Certificate holders are not required to attend patrols during the months of September and April. In lieu of this, SRC holders may be requested to assist with Nipper activities by their patrol captains if rostered on Sunday mornings.

- All members also have the ability to up-skill by obtaining more awards through our education

programs that we provide. These awards available to club members will not only help you on the beach but also further your qualifications on your resume and in the workplace. If you are interested please contact our CTO Paul O’Donohue on [email protected]

- Skills maintenance (proficiency) is required to be done each year for most awards obtained. The

skill maintenance schedule is contained within this handbook. It is the member’s duty to arrange a time to do their skills maintenance. All skills maintenance must be completed by the 31st December. No skills maintenance will be done after this date.

- Keep an eye out for the latest club news and events in the monthly newsletter. We ask all members

to regularly read this to ensure you are kept up to date with events being planned around the club, which include training, social and everything in between. The club also has a private Facebook page, “Maroubra SLSC”, which members can request access to. Here members arrange patrol swaps and redistribute information that is in club newsletter and emails. Members are encouraged to use the Facebook page for obtaining patrol swaps.

We thank you for your continued commitment to the surf club and the local community. If you have any questions or if you would like to gain any more information on the areas of lifesaving, competition or education please do not hesitate to contact one of the Club officers whose names and numbers are located within this handbook. Yours sincerely, Mathew Harper Mark Richardson Club Captain Vice-Club Captain

IMPORTANT PATROL OBLIGATIONS AND INFORMATION

The following information outlines some aspects of patrol duty of which you are to be aware as well as the protocols for patrol swaps and obtaining proficiency.

1. Patrolling the beach to safeguard the public from the dangers of surf and performing any required rescues is the main function of the surf club and the reason for it being in existence.

2. After being allocated to a particular patrol, it is your duty and responsibility to attend that

patrol each and every time the patrol is rostered. Consequently you must look up the patrol roster regularly to find out when you are next on duty. Pay particular attention during December and January.

3. If prior to a rostered patrol, you know you are unable to attend (due to illness, holidays,

competition, work, etc.) you must:

- Arrange a substitute person with somebody of equal lifesaving standard to yourself (e.g. Bronze for Bronze) and sign a patrol contract before both of the patrols you are swapping need to be completed. You will then become fully responsible for the new patrol and the other person responsible for your old patrol. Patrol contracts can be found in the surf club office and when completed left in the sign on book. Patrol contracts agreed to online (eg Facebook) must be screen shotted for your own records.

4. If for some unforeseen circumstance (illness or accident, etc.) you are unable to attend your

patrol or arrange a substitute, you should attempt to notify your patrol captain or the club captain, before the start time of the patrol.

5. Subject to rule 6; if you miss a patrol (called a “no show”) you must do a “make up” patrol

and a “penalty” patrol.

6. For the first “no show” recorded in a season a member will not be required to complete a penalty patrol. The member will still be required to complete the “make up patrol” (preferably prior to the no-show) and to notify the patrol captain prior of their non-attendance.

7. If you miss 2 rostered patrols and you have not done a “make up” and a “penalty” patrol you

are automatically suspended from using all Club facilities and equipment. Your swipe key will be turned off and you are not to enter the Clubhouse.

8. If you miss 4 patrols (“no shows”) in a season (even if you do make ups and penalties) you

are automatically suspended from using the Clubhouse, facilities and equipment. Your entry swipe will be turned off. You can appeal to the Life Saving Committee to use the Clubhouse again.

9. If you are suspended for missing two patrols you have the right of appeal to the Life Saving Committee, at their monthly meeting.

10. At all times whilst you are on patrol, you must obey any direction given to you by your patrol

captain or the club captain (or any member whom authority has been given)

Page 5: MAROUBRASLSC 1 … · need to be completed. You will then become fully responsible for the new patrol and the other person responsible for your old patrol. Patrol contracts can be

MAROUBRASLSC 5

11. At all times whilst on patrol, a patrol uniform must be worn. This includes patrol cap (secured), shorts and shirt.

12. Any person who deliberately misses a patrol or misses a patrol whilst competing for a club,

will automatically be suspended until a “make up” and a “penalty” patrol have been done and the person has appeared before the Life Saving Committee.

13. Patrol members are required to report to their patrol captain 10 minutes prior to the

commencement of the patrol and are required to stay until dismissed by the captain.

14. All patrolling members must personally sign on.

15. If you have any questions regarding patrols you should contact the club captain.

16. To receive a Patrol Efficiency Award for the season a member must sign on to the patrol ON TIME (not late) for each rostered patrol and repay all Arranged Substitute patrols that have been done for them by other members by the end of the season. If it is not possible to repay the patrol then do a Voluntary patrol.

17. No member can arrange a substitute to be done for them by another member for a ‘make up’ or ‘penalty’ patrol.

18. Active Reserve: to be eligible to apply for active reserve status you must complete the

equivalent of 8 years of full patrol

19. Surf Rescue Certificate holders are not required to attend patrols during the months of September and April.

20. Note: To all cadets/active members that wish to compete this season. You must complete

25hrs during the calendar year (from 1st January to 31 December) and be proficient.

21. Patrol Records can be checked online at any time by logging into your members portal.
