Marriotts Weekly News Aim high. Work hard. Be kind. 29 th March 2019 Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Families What a busy week it has been for our students. On Thursday 28 th we hosted the fantastic Healthy Living Festival organised and delivered by Marriotts and Lonsdale students. You can read the full report later within this newsletter. Many thanks to Miss Livingstone for her fantastic work in heading this up and particularly to our impressive student Champions for their amazing leadership. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings Year 11 put on their fantastic end of course concerts and we were really impressed by their talent and commitment. Thank you to Mr Waddell and his team for their brilliant leadership for these events and to Mr Etienne for his work as sound engineer. On Thursday night students took part in our Gym and Dance display. The event was a huge success and was very well supported by parents. The performances were really impressive and we will share photographs and reports about this event in next week’s Newsletter. Congratulations to Year 10 students this week who have had fantastic results in the PE BTECs and continued praise is due to Year 11, 12 and 13 to their diligent approach to learning at this stressful time. This week’s assemblies were led by Ms Slade and myself and were focused on British Values and specifically the value of tolerance. Ms Slade spoke to students about the recent events in Christchurch, New Zealand and the unity and love demonstrated by the community in its wake. I am sure our thoughts are with all those in New Zealand at this difficult time. Thank you for your continued care and support of our students. Have a restful weekend. Kind regards Ms B Honnor Headteacher Fundraising We are delighted to announce that the school has raised a fantastic £1,000 in total following last week’s fundraising activities. The money will be split equally between the Downs Syndrome Association and Comic Relief. We would like to thank everyone for their kind donations. Word of the Week As part of the school's drive to advance the reading skills of every student we are focusing on broadening vocabulary by teaching key academic words explicitly in class. To support this, we have introduced a 'Word of the Week' (WOW) that features key, high-frequency words used by all faculties across the school. The aim is to use these words as much as possible to ensure that the precise meaning is embedded to allow students to use these words accuracy in academic writing and talk in their subjects. Please support your child and the school by using this word at home and challenging your child to use it accurately. The WOW for w/c 1 st April is: symbol A thing that represents or stands for something else, especially a material object representing something abstract Example: A red light is a symbol that we should stop.

Healthy Lifestyle Festival – Marriotts School

On Thursday 28th March a Healthy Lifestyle Festival was held at Marriotts School for KS3 pupils from Marriotts and Barnwell Schools in order to raise engagement in sport and healthy living. The aim of the festival was to ll improve students’ behaviour, attitude to learning and personal traits such as self-esteem, confidence and commitment to sport and daily life. This festival incorporated a range of interactive events and was run and organised by Year 9 students from Marriotts and Lonsdale Schools. In November the students attended a conference in Birmingham with the Youth Sports Trust. The Conference informed students that our younger generation are estimated to have their lifespan cut short by 5 years due to the rise of inactivity and disengagement with physical activity. Students were trained to become ‘Healthy Lifestyle Champions’ and were tasked with organising the Healthy Lifestyle Festival to have an impact on reducing this risk for our local population. The festival was a massive success with 50 students attending from Marriotts and Barnwell, the Headteachers of Marriotts and Lonsdale, as well as the Mayor and Mayoress of Stevenage. Each individual participated in a range of events such as mindfulness, healthy eating and lifestyle, boxing, archery, speed stacking and hoola hooping. The Healthy Lifestyle Champions will now run extracurricular activities based on the events from the festival during the summer term at Marriotts and Barnwell Schools. “I was incredibly proud today to attend the Healthy Lifestyle Festival held at Marriotts School. Healthy lifestyles are so important in today’s, sometimes, stressful society and it’s great to see Marriotts and Lonsdale’s students leading on this area of work and acting as Healthy Lifestyles Champions. I was particularly proud of our Champions today, for the great initiative they have led and developed and the incredible quality of the workshops they have put on.” Ms Honnor

Hertfordshire Road Safety Partnership and Active and Safer Travel Most people do wear their seatbelts but still nearly ten per cent choose not to – help them make the right decision for themselves and others. If you have friends or family, who still do not realise how important it is to belt up, have that conversation and make sure they know how much you value their safety, and everyone else’s in the vehicle. Please make sure children are secured in the most appropriate car seat for their age and height. For more on seatbelts and car seats go to www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/seatbelts

The Hertfordshire Road Safety Partnership is supporting the seatbelt campaign run by Roads Policing, raising awareness about the importance of wearing your seatbelt. You can receive a fine of up to £500 if you are caught not wearing your seatbelt. We would be delighted if you were able to be involved and support the campaign – thank you.
