The Purpose

• To contain communism where it existed.

• To build stable democratic nations for a strong alliance.

• It was also an economic stimulant to the US economy.

Industry & Agriculture

• The US focused on industry and agriculture of selected countries.

• Industries were rebuilt using US steel, aluminum, and concrete.

• Farm equipment was supplied by the US and companies built factories there.

• The Missouri Mule became a hero to the Greek famers.

1948 Italian Elections• The CIA felt the elections may lead to a communist party victory overall and change the

Italian government to a communist government so they employed 4 tactics to note.

1. They then encouraged relatives living in the US to write back to Italy to influence them to vote democratic.

2. They involved the Catholic church to excommunicate members who were communist and those associated with communists.

3. Movies were shown in the rural areas that revealed churches being torn to the ground in communist countries.

4. They sent operatives to spend cash to inform voters through flyers, billboards on the downfalls of communism.
