Is your student interested in

going to college or trade

school after high school?

TRIO Talent Search is a

federally funded program that began in the HEB ISD in September of 2006. The

Advisors help students prepare for college or trade/vocational school. They focus

on topics such as college information, career readiness, financial aid, financial

literacy, goals setting, time management and so much more.

They are here to help students with college enrollment, academic achievement,

and the financial aid process. Students meet in small groups once a month in the

library during their elective class. The Advisors take students on college campus

tours during the school year.

Students in Mrs. Nunez’s GT and Advanced Academic English classes are reading the iconic novel The Outsiders by S.E.

Hinton. They stepped into the novel and transformed themselves into Socs and Greasers for extra credit. Don't

worry; no rumbles transpired as a result.

Last week, French 1B students worked on improving their speaking skills by interviewing

Tex. They are working on interpersonal speaking skills and asking original questions. Students

had to respond spontaneously to interview questions. If a student got stuck, our respectful

audience members helped them answer questions in French. Madame Reynaud learned some

things about her bear. For example, he likes to stay up late to read

and goes to bed at 3:00 a.m.!

Attention Parents/Guardians of 7th Grade Girls and 8th Grade Boys:

The Texas Department of State Health Services requires screening for all 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys. Children will be screened for two types of spinal deformities: scoliosis and kyphosis. Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine is twisted, causing misalignment of the upper body or lower back. This condition can worsen and lead to much pain, as well as complications of the heart and lungs. Kyphosis is an exaggerated rounding of the spine. Progression of these two conditions can often be stopped if detected early. Girls may choose to wear a tight fitting tank top or sports bra if they wish during screening, and may want to keep one with them in their backpack so they can use it if called for screening. If your student has already been screened or is currently undergoing treatment for scoliosis, please provide a doctor’s note with screening results or a letter stating they are currently under treatment. If a note is not provided, the student will be screened. If you have any questions, you may contact the school nurse.

Hello! My name is Sarah Oldenburg, and I am excited to have joined the Harwood Junior High staff this year. I spent the last ten years teaching English at Travis Middle School in Irving ISD. As a Travis Bobcat, I was selected as the Teacher of the Year and lead teacher for eighth grade. I am so thankful to be part of the English department at Harwood and work with such incredible teachers. As a Blackhawk, I teach two advanced-level classes and four on-level English classes, all eighth grade.

In October, I will celebrate my eleventh wedding anniversary with my husband, Chris, a creative at How It Should Have Ended (a Youtube channel with 10.1 million subscribers). We have two boys who fill our days with laughter and Legos. Elijah is a second grader at Lakewood and Beau is in pre-K at Spring Garden. When I’m not teaching, I love to get swept away in a good book, watch movies with my family, and bake.

Harwood’s newest Campus Adopter, Ladies that Cater, dropped off a Monday morning treat for our staff. A giant, scrumptious grazing board full of baked goods, cheeses, crackers, fruit, breakfast casserole and juice! What an awesome way to start the 2nd six weeks! Thank you, Lades that Cater!

Be sure to visit their social media pages to see what’s cooking each week! Want to enjoy a home-cooked meal without all of the work? Let the Ladies that Cater make your weeknights easier. They offer dinner deliveries every Tuesday and Thursday.

Positive Office

Referrals

Positivity is a Superpower!

When teachers notice a student going above

and beyond, they can take that opportunity to

write a Positive Office Referral. Whether it’s for

demonstrating kindness, responsibility, respect

or optimism, these students should be

acknowledged. Dr. Givens calls the students

down to his office, congratulates them and

reads to them the teacher’s comments.

And, the student gets a gourmet lollipop!

What can you do to be the

next student to the office

for positivity?

Have you missed MakerSpace? We have missed YOU! HJH Library now has its own
