Nine Japanese led by the well-known Himalayan explorer, Tamotsu Ohnishi, made the first known attempt on Thulagi, a southwest- ern outlier of Manaslu (8,163m) that was opened for climbing by the Nepalese government in 2003. The team approached via the Marsyandi and Dudh Khola toward the Larkya La, as far as the entrance to the Khasontu Khola, where they established base camp at 3,280m.
