Dear Friends,

This past year has been a most successful and exciting period for both Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and Windemere Nursing & Re-habilitation Center. First , on the Hospital side, our Press Ganey pa-tient survey scores have been remarkable, placing us over the 90th percentile of 881 hospitals surveyed for patient satisfaction. Press Ganey Associates, a national firm in Indiana, specializes in quality care measurement and the improvement of health care institutions. A special thanks to the Medical Staff and our dedicated employees for their outstanding service to our community.

For the fourth year in a row, the Hospital showed a gain from op-erations (this year of just over $1.5 million), demonstrating solid fi-nancial performance. The positive financial results were driven by significant increases in patient volumes. The community’s renewed confidence in the Hospital and an aggressive physician recruitment program have helped stimulate this growth.

One of our goals this year was to increase primary care services available to the community. We were fortunate to add four new Pri-mary Care physicians during the year (Dr. Gail O’Brien, Dr. Julia Stun-kel, Dr. Judith Fisher, and Dr. John Lamb), and sorry to see Dr. Bill Tsikitas and Dr. Ilene Klein leave the Medical Staff.

As part of the new building program, we were able to begin the an-ticipated renovations of the existing Hospital (slated to be used for Administration and Physician Offices) by replacing the roof, install-ing a new boiler, and upgrading our back-up generators.

On the Windemere side of the campus, I’m happy to report that for the second year in a row, Windemere posted a modest profit from operations. This year the Massachusetts Department of Public Health conducted its first Resident Satisfaction Survey and Wind-mere scored in the top 13 per cent statewide. Congratulations to the staff for this notable achievement.

Finally, on behalf of everyone at both the Hospital and the Nurs-ing Home, I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks for your generosity and commitment over this past year.

Dear Friends,

This past year has seen many additions to the Medical Staff. I am delighted to be able to welcome Drs. Judith Fisher, John Lamb, Gail O’Brien, Marc Shapiro, Julia Stunkel, nurse practitioner Nancy Phillips and licensed acupuncturist , Nancy Gilfoy, who all joined the Medical Staff in the last year. We will miss Drs. Ilene Klein and Bill Tsikitas, who are both dedicated physicians and were stalwart members of our staff.

We now have 12 active staff physicians providing primary care at the Hospital, five internists, five family practitioners, and two pediatricians. The increased number of providers has made it much easier for patients to find a physician.

For the second year in a row, the Emergency Services Department has obtained patient satisfaction scores that are among the highest in the nation. Always looking to improve medical care on the Island, the depart-ment is also involved in training the first class of Island paramedics.

The Surgical Department has acquired new laparoscopic equipment and has expanded their colonoscopy services.

We look forward to the construction of the new hospital and I am pleased to report that there has been 100 per cent support from the active medical staff to the New Hospital Fund.

In closing I would like to say that none of the changes that occurred over the past several years would have been possible without the unprecedented cooperation and excellent working relationship between the Medical Staff and the hospital’s administration.

Dear Fellow Vineyarders,

Sometimes the impossible can happen. Islanders can all agree.

During the past year, we have been witness to the most unusual of Island events — the coming together of the entire Vineyard community behind a single idea. After many years of thoughtful planning and active debate, there is now almost total unanimity among all of us that call Martha’s Vineyard our home, or our home away from home, that the time has come for us to rebuild our Island hospital.

On July 4th one year ago we officially began our capital campaign to raise the needed $42 million. Thanks to the generosity of so many, we have already received over $32 million in gifts and pledges toward that goal. As heartening as it has been to see so many so willing to give, we are now faced with the very daunting task of raising the remaining $10 million by summer’s end. As we make our final push to our goal, we are asking for your help. If this new Hospital is to be, it will only happen because of the support and generosity of our entire Island community.

This is an incredibly important moment for the hospital and the Island. Together, we can create a health care institution that can set the standard for what community health care can and should be.

During the past year, we have been witness to the most unusual of Island events — the coming together of the entire Vineyard community behind a single idea. After many years of thoughtful planning and active debate, there is now almost total unanimity among all of us that call Martha’s Vineyard our home, or our home away from home, that the time has come for us to rebuild our island hospital.

On July 4th one year ago we offi cially began our capital campaign to raise the needed $42 million. Thanks to the generosity of so many, we have already received over $32 million in gifts and pledges toward that goal. As heartening as it has been to see so many so willing to give, we are now faced with the very daunting task of raising the remaining $10 million by summer’s end. As we make our fi nal push to our goal, we are asking for your help. If this new Hospital is to be, it will only happen because of the support and generosity of our entire Island community.

This is an incredibly important moment for the hospital and the island. Together, we can create a health care institution that can set the standard for what community health care can and should be.
