Introduction
Before you start making a study of the family register of Johannes Jurgen Bornman, I suggest you
first read the article of Lanie Farrelly (Bornman) on her website http://www.bornman.org. so that
you may know where our noble family Bornman comes from.
I would like to thank Lanie Farrelly for the wonderful work she had done on the Bornman family and
allowing me to publish Volume 3 of Johannes Jurgens Borman, 1813-1884, on her website.
This family register is not without its mistakes. If you do find any mistakes please let me know, and
if you do have any source documents to prove your point, even better.
Any labeled photos or documents are very welcome. Remember it is not my Family Register, it
belongs to all of us that can proudly call ourselves Borman’s.

MOST OF THE FAMILY HISTORY PLAYED OFF IN THE TOWN VOSBURG,
NORTHERN CAPE. Vosburg is a town 61 km west of Britstown, in the Northern Cape province of
South Africa. The town has relatively low crime rate and features many 18th century
buildings. Town 100 km north-north-west of Victoria West, 70 km west of
Britstown and 94 km north-east of Carnarvon.

Surrounded by Karoo koppies (hills) that form part of the Karee mountains, one finds
Carnarvon, an attractive and fascinating Karoo village in the Northern Cape province of
South Africa.

WHO WAS JOHANNES JURGENS BORMAN?
Johannes was born as an illegitimate child on 13 January 1813 to Johan
Christiaan Bornman, age 24 and his step sister in law the 17 year old
Dorothea Adriana du Preez.
We must not confuse Johannes Jurgens Borman with his brother
Johannis Jürgen Bornman, six months younger and the legitimate son of
Johan Christiaan Bornman and his wife Cornelia Carolina du Preez, half
siste of Dorothea Adriana du Preez.
What the result was of his actions is not known, but one can guess.
Where Johannes grew up I also do not know.
I however do not think that he had a close relationship with his father
Johan. I say this for the following reasons.
• I could not trace a single one of his offspring that bears his fathers
names, which was a common practice those days.
• His surname was changed from BORNMAN to BORMAN.
• When Johan left for the Free State, his whole family accompanied
him except Johannes Jurgens his illegitimate son.
