Introduction
Dear valued customer,
We are a family run business, where we all live and breathe martial arts and fitness.
We train, teach, compete and use the equipment ourselves, which has helped us develop a unique understanding
of what our customers require, and supply equipment we are happy to use and put our name to. Our business is
not all about the bottom line; it is about supplying the products and service we would want as a customer of
these products too!
Please email or freephone with any questions you have, as I have been bodybuilding since 1983, training myself
and my junior and adult students to become national champions and instructors in Jiu Jitsu & Judo since 1987,
manufacturing and supplying mats, sports hall, martial arts, boxing, free weights, strength & fitness equipment
since 1993, and am confident that we offer the best quality equipment at the best prices.
To see what some of our satisfied customers say about us, please read our testimonials at www.martialartmats.co.uk/testimonials

Quality - all our equipment is high quality and is for commercial use.
Our mats are manufactured and flame retardant to British Standards. Compared to others they have less surface
deflection - helping to prevent ankle roll and rotational injuries, absorb impact better – for more pleasurable use,
are less abrasive - reducing friction burns, outlast others - as they are more resistant to surface marking &
damage due to hard wearing top and bottom surfaces which are both securely bonded to avoid peeling.
Value
We are competitively priced with top quality equipment that lasts under commercial usage.
Service
We provide a friendly knowledgeable service and help our customer’s needs as much as possible, often
reducing delivery times when needed.
We help our customers choose the right equipment from a large range, as well as offering special sizes and
installation, so customers can focus on their core business, and what they are good at while we do what we are
good at!
All prices on the website, catalogue and price list are pre-vat.
Kind Regards
John Meltzer (Managing Director & Owner and Practicing Martial Artist, Instructor and former national champion)

Judo Mats – all 230kg/m3 (14lb) chipfoam unless stated otherwise
Judo Mats are ideal for all martial arts including, but not limited to: Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Aikido, Karate, Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Ju Jitsu, Jeet Kune Do, Kick boxing, Thai
Boxing, Muay Thai, Capoeira, Grappling, Wrestling, Kung Fu, Nin Jutsu, Tai Chi, Kendo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, BJJ, Gracie Jiu Jitsu,
Shorinji Kempo, Wing Chun, Iado, Ken Jutsu, Sumo, Tang Soo Do and many more martial arts as well as sports like Gymnastics.
However we strongly recommend that mats from our gymnastics mats range are not used for adult martial arts, particularly ones
involving throwing such as Judo and Jiu Jitsu. They are not thick enough and the foam is not of a high enough density to absorb the
impact from throws, resulting in bottoming out, which means the person thrown feels the floor as the mat has only partially absorbed
the impact.
Judo mats are from 3 variable parts, a top surface, a foam core - which absorbs the impact, and an anti-slip base.

JUDO MAT COMPARISONS, SPECIFICATIONS & TECHNICAL
Our Judo Mats are robust and very long lasting as well as enjoyable to train on for junior and adult advanced martial
artists as well as beginners. They are all designed for regular commercial use.
I have trained and taught on all of our different models of Judo Mats at my Jiu Jitsu & Judo club, as I have been live
testing them from 2000-2013! www.macc-jitsu.co.uk
They are the original ones I supplied to my club, and after13 years they still had a lot of life left in them, so I sold them on
I would class my club usage as light commercial, as we trained twice a week in bare feet and martial art suits (gis), and
used weapons. As well as throwing and ground work we used joint locks and strikes with hands and feet.
Light footwear can be worn on any of the mats, but it will wear them out quicker. Weapons can be used on any of the
mats, but heavy impacts with hard or sharp weapons will damage the top surface, so care needs to be taken,
If any of the following will take place at any time, heavy footwear like boots, riot training and where weapons will have
heavy contact with the mat, we only recommended mats from the Combat Judo Mat range which are designed for heavy
commercial use, heavy footwear, riot training and heavy impact with weapons.
Manufactured in the UK / EU in accordance with BS EN 12503 parts 3-7 (2001)
Sports Mats, Judo Mats, Safety Requirements, Shock Absorption, Base Friction, Top Friction, Static Stiffness.
Flame Retardant and independently tested to BS 1892-3: 2003 “HIGH HAZARD” Classification, ignition sources 0 & 5
composite.
Our models vary based on different top surfaces, and anti-slip bases, and for the Olympic Judo model, foam density.
The top surface pvc patterns are leather, tatami, smooth or very smooth, with either cotton or polyester backing.
Our range of Club Judo Mats have a leather look surface pattern which has the same excellent grip and wear resistance as
the cotton backed tatami pattern, but is cheaper due to this material being more commercially available. It is the same as
you see on gymnastic / PE mats / fitness equipment.
It is a cotton backed pvc, and is very durable for martial arts, gymnastics and general sports where bare feet are used.
Our range of Tatami Judo Mats have a tatami surface pattern which represents the traditional tatami that Japanese Judoka
trained on.
The tatami pattern comes with cotton backed or tougher polyester backed pvc for a longer life.
The cotton backed is used on the Deluxe Tatami Judo Mats and the polyester backed is used on all Contest and Olympic
Judo Mats.
Our contest judo mats (IJF type and IJF approved) have a tatami patterned pvc with a polyester backing as opposed to
a white cotton backing which other makes of mats have. The white cotton backing often shows through on older mats
as the pvc comes away from it before it actually wears through, which is due to it not being as strong as the polyester
backing.
Our range of Combat Judo Mats have a smooth surface pattern which is designed to be kinder to the skin than the leather
and tatami patterns and is made from an extra heavy duty pvc and is for high commercial use in tough environments
where equipment is used on the mats as well as heavy footwear e.g. riot training.
Our range of BJJ / MMA Judo Mats have a very smooth pattern which is geared towards BJJ & MMA and no gi fighting
as it has a very low friction surface which is great for reducing friction burns, but doesn’t offer as much grip as the tatami
surfaces, particularly when wet.
The smooth and very smooth are both polyester reinforced with pvc on both sides, the Olympic BJJ / MMA having a
special polyester backing for extra durability.

Bonding
Top surface and base are bonded to the foam core using environmentally friendly non solvent adhesive.
Corners
All corners are heat welded giving a more robust and longer lasting mat than sewn corners.
Foam Core
All our Judo Mats use specifically chosen 14lb/ft3 = 230kg/m3 medium hard, except for the OLYMPIC models 17lb/ft3
= 270kg/m3 very hard, and semi pro MMA Judo Mat 10lb/ft3 = 200kg/m3 , all high density, combustion modified,
recycled chipfoam that is made from the trim of bedding / seating foam which gives it the ideal combined properties of:
Except for the semi pro MMA Judo Mat 10lb/ft3 = 200kg/m3 where requirements are different:
Surface staying firm to allow faster movement across the mat and quick and easy turning into throws or kicks without feet
sinking into the mat, particularly for one legged throws like Hane Goshi where the weight of 2 people is on the ball of one
persons foot while they are rotating on it, avoiding potential rotational injuries of toes, ankles, knees, hips and spine.
Absorbing the heaviest of throws with the largest of martial artists, without bottoming out, minimising the potential of
sustaining impact injuries. The medium hard 14lb/ft3 = 230kg/m3 allows for junior beginners to enjoy breakfalling on a
mat that is not too hard, the very hard 17lb/ft3 = 280kg/m3 is designed as a fast mat for International Competitors.
We use high specification foam in all of them, and don’t use cheaper softer foams due increased potential for rotational
injury.
Anti-slip Bases
This can be either latex for good grip, IJF Type cellular rubber (waffle) for very good grip, Hi-Grip cellular for excellent
grip, or IJF approved cellular rubber (waffle), which offers world class levels of grip and is the most slip resistant.
The deluxe in each range of Club, Tatami & Combat Judo Mats have a latex anti-slip base which has good anti-slip
properties and is cheaper than the other bases.
Martial Arts Club , IJF Type Contest & Super Combat Judo Mats have an IJF Type cellular (waffle) base which has very
good anti-slip properties and is more slip resistant than latex.
The Hi-Grip Judo Mats in each range have a Hi-Grip cellular base which has excellent anti-slip properties and is more slip
resistant than the latex and IJF Type cellular (waffle) bases.
IJF APPROVED Judo Mats have IJF APPROVED Cellular Rubber (Waffle) Anti-Slip Base with hot melt sealing which
has world class anti-slip properties and is more slip resistant than the latex, IJF Type cellular (waffle) base, and Hi-Grip
cellular bases.
All bases are on a reinforced backing for extra strength and longevity.
Although the 3 types of cellular base looks the same the more slip resistant ones have a higher rubber content in
the anti-slip base material, making it more slip resistant.

Competition Areas
How many 2m x 1m mats do I need (double for 1m x 1m mats)?
Most competition areas are 8m x 8m with a safety surround.
If you want the main area to be green and an outer 1m safety border of red mats, then:
14m x 14m area requires 80 green mats and 18 red mats, giving an 8m x 8m centre area and an extra 2m safety
area beyond the red mats
12m x 12m area requires 54 green mats and 18 red mats, giving an 8m x 8m centre area and an extra 1m safety
area beyond the red mats
10m x 10m area requires 32 green mats and 18 red mats, giving an 8m x 8m centre area
8m x 8m area requires 22 green mats and 10 red mats, giving a 4m x 4m centre area (no drawing)
8m x 8m area with no safety border requires 32 green mats

RECOVERING OLD JUDO MATS
There are 3 options for recovering.
Generally the foam is good enough but replacement loose covers can be a hazard, sending to us + labour + return
delivery is too expensive and DIY recovering not feasible.
Option 1 is a loose cover i.e. a sewn cover like a crash mat cover, but to the size of the mat i.e. 2m x 1m x 40mm.
The down side of this is that all mats and covers are made to a tolerance, so if we make and send you a cover it is most
likely it won’t be a very tight fit, and as soon as you rotate on the ball of your foot, the loose material gathers (see
picture below), and once there is no more to gather your foot tends to stop moving, and if you still have rotation coming
from your hips, it can potentially lead to knee injuries.
A loosely fitting cover also restricts smooth sliding across the mat due to the loose material gathering, and forming a ridge which can also be a tripping hazard.
Option 2 is to either send / for us to collect the mat, clean the current top surface sufficiently so it can be bonded to
with a new one, apply the new one (which is most of the labour in making a mat), or make sewn covers to match your
mats exactly and deliver back to you, rather than just sending you the covers as very tight sewn covers need experience
and sometimes tools to fit.
This ends up being so expensive, as carriage is a fairly major cost, and there is collecting and delivering to account for,
most of the labour of a new mat, and the cost of the new top material that you might as well get a new one which will
outlast a repaired one and perform better as the anti-slip will be new on it as well.
It is more cost effective to buy less new ones if on a budget and look at a rolling program of replacement.
Option 3 We could supply you with the top surface material, but unless you are experienced at bonding, have a hand
held glue applicator, the correct glue, and know how to heat weld corners and have the correct type of heat gun to do it,
it’s a bit of a non starter.

SITE / ROOM SURVEY & INSTALLATION Our usual lead times allow for a site survey to be carried out within 1 week to 10 days, then a further 2 to 3 weeks for manufacturing and installation.
The following has been written based on our experience:
Suggestions or thoughts are welcome, as every installation is different and we continually strive to improve.
For us to manufacture and install a professional job, we need the room to have been completed of construction work and free of all equipment for us to be able to make a useful site survey.
We take measurements at numerous places along the length and width of the room, due to room sizes being made to a tolerance of architects drawings and also real world effects / natural shifting / settling over time.
If we are unable to take the required measurements due to incomplete construction work or equipment in the way, and a further site visit is needed, then it will have to be charged for.
Example of how rooms should not look when we turn up to take measurements.

Fitting of Wall Padding
If we are replacing wall padding, please remove the old wall padding before we come to install.
If this is going to be a new wall, then do not fit skirting boards as these are not needed and will make the padding bow out at the bottom, or will require a separate section needed to cover the skirting board. If skirting boards are already fitted then remove them. Make sure the wall is even after removal.
As well as the drawings detailing any protrusions like pillars etc , any pictures and video of the room exactly as it will be when we arrive to install, (or detail the changes that will be made before our arrival) are useful, phone quality is generally fine, showing all the floor area and all the walls, so we can help prevent any unexpected problems which from experience include people giving us wall to wall measurements and omitting that there are skirting boards, kick plates, lino from the floor going up the wall which is not cut flush with the wall, i.e. has a slight curve, this reduces flat floor dimensions enough to prevent the mats from fitting, as well as reducing the internal dimension of the room due to the thickness of the lino. Other obstructions are pipes, heaters, switches, sockets etc, and anything else we haven’t come across before but if seen in a photo would alert us to ask you questions to enable the smooth running and quality fit of the mats and pads. Please ensure all equipment is removed from the room before we come to measure up or / and install. Please confirm whether there are any handles or other protrusions or need for access on the doors such as keyholes, vision panels, windows, or whether just occasional use where pulling back the wall padding that is Velcro attached to the wall would be preferable.
Access to venue Security Any security procedures for entry need to be given to us in good time, with details of what is required and by what date or time period before arrival including whether police checks are required, what documentation is required to send and the time frame for checking, what is required by security on arrival. Are there any signing in procedures, security checks required, ID etc before the day of arrival, or on arrival.
Access Denied / Unable to Start Work Any cancelled visits due to security arrangements we have not been made aware of in writing will be charged for, as will a revisit to site if we cannot gain access for other reasons or if the site / room is not ready for us to start our work. Transporting Materials We have to account for the time it takes to transport materials i.e. mats, padding, tools etc from where the vehicle is parked to the area where the work is to take place. If the room where the installation is to take place is on the ground floor and has a door that is next to where our vehicle can park and unload, then unloading time is generally quite quick, but if we have to park a distance down the road and then once in the building walk upstairs with narrow stairwells and tight bends with 2m x 1m x 40mm mats that weigh 18kg each, they are heavy and not an easy size to manoeuvre. If 50 of these mats are required, that is nearly a tonne of large mats that need moving by hand, so can take many hours if access is not easy and close by.
Let us know where we can park and if there is any restriction on the size of the vehicle. Sometimes we drop materials off from an articulated lorry. If access is limited we will arrange another size of vehicle.
Supply Only
Walls are generally not exactly straight and building regulations allow for a tolerance due to real world circumstances. Buildings also settle a little over time as well.
For wall to wall fitting of mats, we need length and width measurements so we can taper edge mats to fit with any deviations of the wall, and details of any protrusion such as posts, pillars, heating or water pipes. We recommend taking a length and width measurement every 300mm so that we can account for any variation in taper.

Indicate where the door is so we can differentiate each wall and number smaller mats on the drawing and on the underside of the mat. If pads are required for the doors then a sketch is required for these as well showing where the handles are and any vision panels.
Please measure across the floor, as this will take into account where the mats will actually be, and avoids any differences not thought about such as skirting boards, which are fine to leave in place if just floor mats being installed, or other factors that will affect a measurement such as walls leaning in slightly if measured higher up the wall, lino that goes up the wall and curves where wall and floor meet, reducing floor dimensions.
Small variations over long lengths are accounted for by the mats themselves, as they do give a little, which allows for tolerances in measuring, taper variation, and manufacturing.
If there is a slight overlap, this can generally be overcome by lifting 2 mats off the ground a little so the two edges meet, leaving a V channel running the length of where they meet, and then pushing them down together.
If the overlap appears too big to allow the mats to touch the floor where they join then you will need to make the mats further down a tighter fit, by pushing them against each other more firmly.
If the opposite happens and gaps appear either due to different coefficients of expansion i.e. the room expands more than the mats when the temperature rises or the mats contract more than the room when the temperature drops, we can supply expansion / contraction strips. These operate on the same basis as bridge and other civil engineering projects, where the strips make up a gap but are also flexible enough to allow expansion of the adjoining material. When installing, if it makes the mats too big for the area, use the technique above for fitting. In most cases the main area of floor will have 2m x 1m mats and the remaining area between the mats and the wall can be completed in two different ways. Either the 2m x 1m mats are laid down starting from a corner, leaving one length and one width of the room to have specially made part mats, or the 2m x 1m mats are centred in the room leaving a border either on 2 sides or all the way around, which can be in red or another opposing colour to the main mats.
If you are cutting the mats to size on site yourself, we recommend cutting from the bottom to the top surface. DON’T cut through the top surface, only cut until the top surface pvc /vinyl layer. Scrape the foam away and refold and glue the vinyl to the exposed foam core.
If you want us to manufacture to size in the factory, then best for us to supply all the full size mats, and then for you to re-measure the remaining area, and we will make the bespoke ones to fit. We need to know this at the quote stage as we charge more for specials.

Wall Padding for Dojos, Training Rooms, Safe Rooms etc.
2m x 1m panels with velcro backing to attach to the wall and leather look pvc finish are competitively priced and suit most environments. Exceptions are riot training and similar, where the wall is used as part of the training in which case we recommend 50mm thick and extra heavy duty pvc which the Combat Wall Pads use or if people / skin will make regular contact and slide across the surface then consider the BJJ / MMA Wall Pad / Mat
Heavy-duty lightweight panels for maximum protection . Bonded cover for neatness, and ease of wiping down / cleaning Large choice of colours, patterns and strengths of pvc cover: (others available as specials) Club Wall Pad/Mat: Blue / Red / Black - Leather Pattern PVC Tatami Wall Pad/Mat: Green / Red / Blue / Yellow - Tatami Pattern PVC Combat Wall Pad/Mat : Blue / Black / Red / Green / Orange / Yellow / Grey - Extra Tough Heavy Duty Smooth PVC BJJ / MMA Wall Pad/Mat - Blue / Black / Red / Green / Orange / Yellow / Grey – Very Smooth PVC Standard Thicknesses 30, 40, 50, 60mm Velcro bonded to the perimeter of the wall padding that allows easy fitting and removal to velcro that is self-adhesive and also stapled to 50mm x 6mm battens or direct on to the wall (dependant on wall surface). Walls can be ply lined so the receiving Velcro can be stapled to it. Special sizes and special fittings can be made to suit different environments. Hardboard backed Wall Padding can be fixed to the wall to prevent removal e.g. in special needs environments, or standard panels can be bonded direct to the wall. For new installations, we recommend that skirting boards are not put on the wall and the wall is not painted to save money during the construction of the wall and to enable a flush fit of the Wall Pads. Excellent impact properties, 30mm thick generally used in Dojos and Physical Intervention (control and restraint) training rooms where the Wall Padding is more for accidental falls into the wall. The more impact expected on the wall, the thicker the Wall Padding we recommend, especially if the Wall Padding is used as a training aid i.e. intentional impact with the wall.
Standard sizes or made-to-measure. Standard sizes 2m x 1m , 1.83m x 1.22m (6’ x 4’), 2.44m x 1.22m (8’ x 4’)
We can work from accurate and final drawings.
We can advise what type of fixing method would be best when you email photos of the walls and their intended use.
Photos also help with close ups for intricate detail, e.g. around light switches, handles etc.
Our Technicians can visit your site and advise accordingly if drawings and photos not sufficient, however there is a cost.
We also fit studded walls and undertake other construction work too.
Our outside corner panels are made as a folding unit – 2 half panel widths so there is no join and no risk of movement to expose the hard corner behind. Special sizes are made for in-fill panels, corner units and to go around objects like light switches, plug sockets etc.

Colour options for the different models of Wall Padding are shown at the top of this section. We recommend black, particularly for the floor as this doesn’t show scuff marks like colours do. It is quite popular to make the door padding in red, so people know where they are. Gymbox – London Urban Kings - London

Air Mats for Gymnasts, Cheerleading Training and Martial Arts.
The feeling of our new Air Mats needs to be felt to be believed. The Air Mat is unlike any other product available and will help
you and your cheerleaders / gymnasts push to that next level of training.
The Air Mats are designed to give more rebound off hands and feet, they increase air time whilst reducing the strain put on
joints whilst training. Air Mats work best when placed on top of a matted surface or sprung floor and this is how we recommend
you use them.
The Air Mats benefit from being light which makes them easy to move around the gym. Being inflatable the Air Mats can be
deflated easily and packed away at the end of each session this also makes them very easy to transport should you wish to use
them in different locations.
Helping develop moves such as round offs, back handsprings and flicks the Air Mats also help to increase confidence. Air Mats
are very versatile and a flexible piece of equipment which can be adjusted for small or large gymnasts.
Inflate the Air Mat once and it stays inflated use after use.
Covers are recommended for both protecting the Air Mat and they come with velcro attachments on all sides so Air Mats can be
joined together to create a tumble run which is perfect for demos or shows.
The Air Mats are fine to be used without a cover, but we have had some customers say that they had not been looked after when
in storage if left inflated, often due to other users of the storeroom carelessly putting other equipment away, and if punctured
they can’t be used!
Each Air Mat comes with a hand pump. i.e. buy 3 Air Mats and you receive 3 hand pumps, so you can use and store Air Mats in
different locations, without having to remember to take a pump with you.
All Air Mats are 1.5m wide and 70mm thick.

Bouldering Wall Matting - Custom Made for Your Climbing Wall
Constructed using a hard wearing, fire
retardant foam core, it has been designed
to last longer than standard foams that are
sometimes found in matting areas.
The recommended depth of the landing area
is usually 300mm but can be calculated
from the height of your climbing wall and
the mats will be specifically designed for
your requirements.
The technical details: ● Hard wearing foam core 35 density
● 200mm – 500mm deep
● Other foams/depths available on request
● All foams fire retardant to BS5852 Part 2
Ignition source 5
● Heavy duty FR PVC covers 900gm/m2
● All covers are flame resistant to BS5867
part 2 1980 type B and several other
standards.
R
Modules ready for the wear sheet
All matting is encased in heavy duty PVC
covers . For extra durability, we offer a
choice of either a heavy duty PVC or carpet
wearsheet. This gives a uniform finish
with no gaps and the carpet system can be
vacuum cleaned for easy cleaning. There is
a choice of colours available for both types
of wear sheets.
Our wearsheet system is now our best seller
and in use in many climbing centres across
the UK.
Our team provide a full measuring service
to produce accurate CAD drawings.
Installation can be quoted for if required.

This foam is resilient enough to absorb shock from fall situations but has a high fatigue rating which means
longer life expectancy in service. Other foam core densities are available – please ask if you require a specific
grade.
The landing area will be made in modules using a superior heavy duty PVC at 900 kg /m2 which we
recommend, as this does not significantly add to the cost for the extra strength and life expectancy achieved
when compared to a 600 g/m2 product, which other manufacturers may offer. The cover is flame retardant to
BS5483 2A.
This modular system allows you to replace sections, which may be prone to more wear and tear and minimise
service costs down the line. The use of a wearsheet gives added longevity. All joints are reinforced welded
using state of the art equipment. We use a zip system within each PVC cover and enables the foam to be
replaced if the foam sags after prolonged use. The use of PVC covers also prevents water damage to the foam
core in the event of a flood.
Wearsheets can be produced from a heavy duty PVC or a hard wearing polyester carpet. As well as increasing
longevity of the area the use of a wearsheet ensures there are no gaps between modules and reduces the risk of
injury. However if you are working to a tight budget we can offer an area without a wearsheet, where the
modules will be linked with a Velcro bandage system.
We offer a 12 month guarantee on our climbing wall matting against faulty workmanship or materials, where
any defects will be repaired or replaced free of charge. This does not cover fair wear and tear or damaged
caused to the area.
You will need to provide drawings for the area you require from which we will produce our own drawings with
module size details. These will then need to be approved.
If you are interested we can organise for a complete measuring service using the latest laser technology which
links into a CAD system ensuring optimum design and an accurate fit along the contours of your climbing wall.
This reduces potential Health & Safety issues with poor fitting wall matting and minimises installation times.
This is an extra charge.
Approximate price (to be confirmed upon receipt of drawings and specification) – free delivery

Frequently Asked Questions
To help you decide what is the most suitable equipment for you, we have compiled the following list of questions and
answers.
What is the best Judo Mat for my purposes?
In most cases we recommend the 2m x 1m x 40mm Club Judo Mat because it is the same quality as the Tatami Judo Mat
but it is cheaper as it doesn’t have the more expensive tatami pattern on the surface.
Is the tatami patterned surface better than the other?
The tatami pattern offers more grip, but it can also be prone to giving more friction burn as it has more grip. This is the
reason we offer so many models, as they all have some advantage over each other, but also some drawback. It is a
matter of choosing what is best for your purposes and budget.
Why pay extra for the tatami top surface?
Some people prefer the look of it, as traditionally Japanese floors were covered with tatami mats that had a woven soft
rush straw surface, and this pattern is imprinted into the PVC top surface, as well as it giving more grip.
Why is the tatami surface more expensive than the leather look?
The material is not as commercially available as the leather look finish which is used in general upholstery too.
What about 1m x 1m mats?
They are only half as slip resistant as the 2m x 1m mats as they are only half the weight, but are more suitable for
children to put out. These aren’t recommended for adults to train on because they will slip on the floor too much unless
they are wall to wall, or have some means of preventing the edge mats from moving.
Do some areas need a single 1m x 1m x 40mm mat to complete the area?
Yes, certain areas will. You can draw this out on paper with rectangles to see if you will need one, or just email us
[email protected] and we’ll work it out for you.
Are Jigsaw Mats as good as Judo Mats?
There are pros and cons.
Pros
They are much lighter, so easier for kids to get the mats out.
You don’t get gaps between the mats as they fit together.
You have one colour one side and one colour the other, so can change the colour layout whenever it suits you.
If one side gets damaged, you can use the other side.

Cons
The surface of the Jigsaw mat is “slippier” and more abrasive (more prone to giving friction burns).
It won’t absorb the shock of heavy throws as well as the Judo Mats, and they will bottom out i.e. only absorb part of the
force of the person hitting the mat, when the foam doesn't compress anymore and the force remaining is transmitted
through the body of the person, it can potentially lead to injury.
How hard are your Judo Mats?
We combine cushioning with hardness to absorb impact, and make breakfalling enjoyable for novices and advanced
martial artists but firm enough to give the required support and not bottom out on heavy throws such as maki komis as
well as offering minimal surface deflection when turning preventing rotational wear and injuries on joints, ligaments and
tendons that softer mats may cause.
How is the top surface attached to the foam?
Our mats are bonded, with non solvent glue, to give a smooth surface to prevent tripping, and give a longer life.
The bonding laminator used reduces manual handling and uses a 2 part non solvent glue system giving a healthier work
environment for employees as well as it helping gain certification for ISO 14001.
Why do the mats have welded corners?
Welding the corners after they have been bonded gives them extra strength, enabling them to last longer.
Are the mats totally slip proof?
No mats from any supplier or manufacturer are slip proof unless permanently secured in place with a border. Some
small amount of movement is to be expected, depending on the “slippyness” of the floor, temperature - as cold
temperatures cause condensation on the floor, and how much the mats are being used.
It is the responsibility of the instructor and students to push the mats back together when a gap occurs. 2m x 1m x
40mm mats are twice as slip resistant as 1m x 1m x 40mm mats!
Can the mats be used for other activities?
They are ideal for all martial arts, gymnastics and many other sporting activities.
What’s does 14lb/ft3 (230kg/m3) foam mean?
It is the density of the foam that makes the core of the mat i.e. It is this that is covered with the PVC one side and anti-
slip another. For those of you who have seen different conversions, here is the calculation to prove 230 kg per cubic
metre equals 14lb per cubic foot - to convert kilograms into pounds 230 x 2.2 = 506 , to convert cubic metres into cubic
feet 1 foot = (12 x 25.4 / 1000) = 0.305 metres, 1 cubic foot = 0.305 x 0.305 x 0.305 = 0.028 cubic metres, so 506 x 0.028
= 14.17lb/ft3, which we just round down to 14lb/ft3 because it is easier to say.

Is the density of foam an accurate description of its quality?
It is essential to have the correct blend of density, hardness and impact absorbing properties as ours do for the correct
deflection of the surface when standing, moving, throwing or falling on to the mat.
When the surface deflects too much you can’t slide across the mat as easily, and when you are turning your toes can dig
into the mat more, potentially causing twisting injuries to toes, ankles, knees, hips and up into the spine. Some of these
are accumulative injuries that will cause more wear and tear on joints, ligaments and tendons; some will be more instant
injuries.
How does your foam create the right blend of surface hardness for minimal deflection but gives the correct cushioning
to absorb heavy breakfalling as well as being suitable for beginners?
Our polyurethane chipfoam with a density of 14lb/ft3 (230kg/m3) is only half the story, since it is made from the “trim”
of seat and bedding foam it gives the ultimate performance with better shock absorption as well as less surface
deflection than our competitors mats, and it is combustion modified to BS 1892-3: 2003
The foam is deep enough and firm enough to give the required support and not bottom out on heavy throws as well as
offering minimal surface deflection when turning preventing rotational wear and injuries on joints and surrounding
areas that softer mats can cause, particularly knee injuries due to your foot being stopped by the mat, but still having
momentum from your hips!
Why don’t other suppliers use the same foam?
It is more expensive, and just quoting the density makes it look the same, but it doesn’t perform as well or last as long
and has potential for rotational injuries.
Are your mats environmentally friendly?
Yes, the foam we use is 100% reconstituted. It is made from the trim (the left over bits) from bedding foam. We also use
a non solvent adhesive for bonding the surface cover to the foam which helped our manufacturing gain certification for
ISO 14001.
How do you sell mats that are cheaper than everyone else’s, when they are better?
We keep our costs down by having an online store, and manufacturing to order, so we have no expensive office and
warehouse costs.
What are your delivery times?
Due to us manufacturing to order as well as stocking, our delivery times vary from next day delivery to 3 weeks
depending on the products and quantities. We can generally improve our lead times if you require sooner, please ask.
Who uses these mats and what for?
These mats are used by everyone from complete beginners to international martial artists. They are used at club,
regional, national and international training and competitions as well as for control and restraint purposes as used by
the Police, Prison and Special National Health Services, Schools, Colleges, Universities, Leisure Centres, Sports Centres,
Private Clubs and many more.

What else affects the mat performance?
The surface and the undercarriage.
A slippier surface, like a highly polished one will cause more slippage and we recommend our Contest Judo Mats with
the more anti-slip base.
The composition of the floor i.e. what lies beneath the surface: A floor with a semi sprung or fully sprung undercarriage
will give more support to uki when he is thrown onto the mat as the springs under the floor will absorb some of the
shock.
How much does each mat / trolley weigh? (Weights given are approximate)
2m x 1m x 40mm Judo Mat weighs 18kg
1m x 1m x 40mm Judo Mat weighs 9kg

Can I pay by bank transfer or cheque?
Yes, please email [email protected] and we will email you back with bank transfer details. Or make a cheque
out to Martial Art Mats, and post to 10 South View, Lower Withington, Macclesfield, Cheshire, SK11 9DZ.
Do you have a continuous improvement policy?
Yes, please email [email protected] with any comments you have, good or bad!
Do you supply other sizes of mats and replacement covers and foam for crash mats?
Yes. We supply many other sizes, our website just shows a small selection. Email [email protected] with your
requirements.
Does bending the mats affect them?
Yes, this affects all mats that have surfaces bonded to foam, whether they are ours or any other make. It causes
delamination, which means the glue that is holding the top and bottom surface to the foam core is weakened and
eventually the surfaces will not be fully stuck to the foam core, resulting in the top surface becoming loose.
When taking mats from the lorry to the dojo/gym, please avoid bending them as much as possible. Carry them side on like
a sheet of timber, so they don't flex in the middle. If you need to get around corners, then better to have the mat with the
2m length vertical. If you need to bend mats at all, keep the pvc side on the outside of the bend, i.e. so it is the side with
the larger diameter / curve. If the pvc side is on the inside of a curve it can crease the pvc.

Mat Trolleys help increase the life of mats as it reduces the amount of handling, where there will always be some
bending and flexing of the mat, and it reduces the amount of distance they might be dragged along the floor.
Expansion of mats under their own weight when low down a big pile
Since the mats lower down the pile will have the weight of the other mats that are above them compressing them causing
them to increase in length and width slightly, which over a number of mats adds up. A 2m x 1m x 40mm judo mat weighs
18kg, so 55 mats weigh a tonne.
If your mats have been delivered before we arrive to install and they have been stacked on top of each other in transit for
a day or more, then when you put them in the dojo / gym please put in small piles to avoid compression from heavy
weights on the bottom mats for a prolonged period. This is only applicable for wall to wall /wall to plinth installations, in
open areas it is okay if mats have expanded slightly as they are not made to measure to fit between set distances.
Do our Judo Mats carry the CE quality mark?
No, judo mats are not a product group which needs to comply with CE marking and is not applicable by insurance companies. Not one judo mat manufacturer worldwide has a CE mark!!! For that reason the EN12503-3 regulation is applicable, and has been recognized as the only quality label by the I.J.F. To guarantee buyers and users a premium quality judo mat, different tests must be executed on: - size tolerances - homogeneous hardness - shock absorption - antiskid resistance of top and bottom Our IJF approved Judo Mats receive a visit from CRITT every year, which is an independent test lab appointed by the IJF. Our Judo Mats do comply with the most severe safety regulations. Below is an excerpt of the EC directives, defining which product groups are affected by the CE marking i.e. which they will test for. _ Active implantable medical devices
_ Appliances burning gaseous fuels
_ Cableway installations designed to carry persons
_ Eco-design of energy related products
_ Electromagnetic compatibility
_ Equipment and protective systems intended for use potentially explosive atmospheres
_ Explosives for civil uses
_ Hot-water boilers

Where can I dispose of my old mats?
We use national carriers and they don’t do collection at the same time as delivery, and would charge us for delivering
back to us and we have commercial scrappage charges for having our works skips emptied, it will be cheaper for you to
take to your local tip where there is no charge for personal waste.
Transport could be an issue as most cars can’t fit a 2m x 1m mat in them. A sharp “Stanley” type knife would cut through
them and once cut in half will fit in a car to take to the skip.
If you do cut through a mat, make sure you have one of the other old ones underneath so you don’t cut through into a
sport hall floor.
Sometimes what some people consider rubbish is useful to other people like a start-up club or charity with no funds, as
long as they are not competition to you, and the mats are not dangerous to use.
Would be useful to any martial arts, gymnastics, children’s groups, scouts, girl guides, community clubs etc.
If you do advertise second hand mats for sale or free, consider who is asking to see them. Criminally minded people
could say yes, just so they get to know where new mats are to steal. Be careful.
You could keep the mats and use them to extend your mat area wall to wall, using the old ones around the edge. They
can be cut to size, or other clubs who want spare mats for around the edge / to extend to make wall to wall might
appreciate them.
Ask the venue where you are if they have a skip / large wheelie bins you can use? If big wheelie bins, then maybe just a
few at a time, might still need to cut in half, so they still have plenty of room.
If not too many mats, then they could be cut into smaller pieces and put in ordinary bins.
How long does it take to lay jigsaw mats?
1200 would require 4 to 6 people and would take about 3 hrs depending on how fast or slow people are.
Make as one area, do not make several and try and join them, as they flex enough to adapt when one row at a time, but
when offering one area to another, they won’t match exactly and you won’t be able to flex a whole area to make it fit
another one.
If 4 people you can do row by row, start in the middle of the row and work out to the edge, or you can do an L shape,
start where column and row meet and work away.
If 6 people you can make an L shape and have people doing a row and a column at the same time.
Have people working in 2’s, one to put the mat in place the other kneeling pushing all the teeth in flush.
Can pull them all up in about 1 hour, just use your own people for this at the end of the competition, just like people
putting mats away at the end of a training session. It is what we do at the end of our nationals, and it takes us about 1
hour for 1200 mats.

How can I Secure Funding for a Business or Non profit Club (11 pages)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________
Business: whether sole trader or limited company, we have a couple of finance companies that we recommend are
worth a try for leasing.
See https://www.martialartsmats.co.uk/leasing/ for more details on the benefits of leasing.
For Limited Companies 01827 68939 [email protected] www.shireleasing.co.uk Largest independent
funding house in the UK for equipment leasing and asset finance.
For Sole Traders: Tony Mate 07506 538997 [email protected] www.clearaf.com
Non-Profit Club:
There is a lot of information below gathered from several sources, so there might be some repetition and discontinuity,
and some details might be out of date, but it has been compiled to give information that might be useful, so good luck.
If you don’t receive funding first time around, don’t give up, like anything else it is a learning curve. Only a small number
will be successful, so don’t take it personally if you don’t succeed.
The person reading your grant application will possibly see hundreds a week, see only take a quick look at them to get
through the volume, so you need to make your application clear, easy to read and appealling, so a quick scan over it by a
busy person who makes the decisions puts your application on the pile to consider.
Learn how to be part of the small number of successful ones by reading the information below, learn what helps to
increase your chance of success and what mistakes to avoid. Below gives you an insight into what the funding bodies are
looking, and what the decision maker wants to see or not, try and think what you would want to see on a form if you were
the decision make and only had a limited amount of money to give out and loads of applications.
Get knocked down 7 times, get up 8.
All great inventors fail many times before success, just like successful people in all walks of life.
The worst that can happen is that you don’t receive funding, but you will gain experience and improve your chances of
securing funding next time as you can ask why you weren’t successful and ask for advice on how to improve your
chances next time. Ask them if there is a specific person in their organisation or anyone else who can give you help.
If you have any ideas or information that will help secure funding that I can add to this, then please email me
[email protected] so we can help others.
• Do your research - find out as much as you can about the funder before approaching the organisation. Look at the
funder’s website. Find out the name of the person responsible for grant administration.
• Be familiar with the grants criteria of the funding organisation
- Only apply if your project falls within the criteria.

• Personal contact can be very helpful, saving time and averting simple mistakes - don’t be afraid to call the funder to
ask questions.
• Be concise - generally, funders do not have time to read a lot of information about each applicant. Brevity can often be
more effective than bombarding the funder with information
which they will not have time to read.
• Be focused - explain what the grant would be spent on and who would benefit - ensure that the funder clearly
understands what you are asking for.
• Be contactable - the grant-maker may need to contact you for further details. If possible, provide an alternative contact
at your organisation (and ensure that he or she is familiar
with the application) in case you are unavailable.
• Read the application requirements carefully and enclose all requested documentation - find out whether you need
to complete a standard application form or simply submit a
request by way of letter.
• Sign the application form if this is required - some grantmakers require a senior employee or trustee to sign the
application form.
• Enclose only the requested information and vital supporting documents - avoid the temptation to submit reams of
information which will confuse, rather than aid, the grant-maker.
• Be organised - find out whether there is a deadline and plan around this. Do not submit your application on the last day
of the deadline - otherwise, if anything is wrong with your
application, there may be no time to rectify the error, and you may miss out.
• Be helpful - after you have submitted your application, don’t forget about it. Send the grant-maker updates about the
project and the results of other fundraising applications to
ensure that the trustees have the full picture when they consider your application.
• Be honest - if there are problems with the project or with your organisation it is better to raise them at the outset and
describe how they are being dealt with.
• Follow up - if you are successful in securing funding, stay in touch with the grant-maker - provide them with feedback on
how the grant has been applied, and send them copies of

your new annual accounts and newsletters.
• Keep an eye on the terms of the grant - if conditions are attached to the grant, ensure that these have all been met.
• Be gracious in defeat - if your application is not successful you will be disappointed, but you may be able to reapply in
the future. Don’t take the failure personally - very good
applications can fail simply because grant-makers do not have an endless pot of money and can only make a limited
number of awards in any one period.
Fundraising is a time-consuming business for both the applicant and the grant-maker, but by thinking about the points set
out above you can go some way towards ensuring that you have optimised your charity’s chances of success.
Generally 3 requirements
1) A set of accounts. Don’t panic if accounts are not your strong point, these only need to be very basic, and if you
don’t know where to start either ask someone else to do them for you or get help.
2) A bank account with 2 signatories that is held in the name of the club, preferably the signatories will not be
related and live at different addresses. The reason for this is to help prevent fraud. However if you are a
husband and wife team or similar, then if necessary you can just explain this.
3) What you are looking to do with the funding will determine who you apply to, as different funding bodies, tend
to fund for different requirements e.g. equipment, team travel to competitions etc.
Grants sometimes fall into specific value categories e.g. below £1000, £5000 , £10,000 etc. The requirements for a lower
value category might be easy to secure funding, so if you know what you want and it is just above a band category, it
might be worth trying to reduce the value to under the band category.
The value you are applying for needs to include the cost of delivery and VAT for equipment. If it is being installed, then
you need to include the cost of that too including VAT, unless either the grant doesn’t include for installation or you
prefer to use club funds for that to keep the grant application value below a certain amount.
A constitution
A safe from harm policy – child protection policy if you have children at the club.

Sport England, JustGiving and CCPR have joined forces to make it easier for clubs to raise money and claim Gift
Aid online, enabling volunteers to spend more time on sport and less time on administration.
JustGiving, the largest online fundraising community in the world, is now able to offer the same tools to Community
Amateur Sports Clubs ( CASCs ) that it provides to the biggest charities in the UK.
JustGiving has dropped its subscription fees – worth £180 per year - for all CASCs , meaning that your club can join
JustGiving today, and start fundraising for all the important things you help raise money for, like a new set of nets or a
changing room revamp.
There are many benefits to using JustGiving to raise money for your club online
You can raise money more easily, quickly and efficiently
JustGiving makes claiming Gift Aid easy, as they do all the administration for you, saving you time and money. Through Gift Aid, the Government will give you up to 28p for every £1 you raise
Payments through JustGiving are weekly, so you know when they are coming, and can plan ahead
Real people are on hand to give you and your supporters help and advice 7 days a week.
Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs ( HMRC ) has estimated that only 10% of CASCs are utilising their ability to claim
Gift Aid, meaning that grassroots clubs are missing out on vital funds that they are fully entitled to claim. JustGiving makes
claiming this money easy.
How to sign up for your free JustGiving account
If you are already a CASC then you can sign up now at www.justgiving.com/sportsclubs
You will receive:
Step-by-step registration help
A JustGiving webpage for your club and unlimited JustGiving pages for your club’s members to raise money through
Expert fundraising guidance and expertise
Help from a person at the other end of a phone if you need it, for both your club and your members
Not a CASC ?
There are many thousands of sports clubs in the UK that could benefit from joining the CASC scheme.
Both property and non-property-owning clubs can gain substantial benefits from the CASC scheme by receiving 80%
mandatory business rate relief and the ability to reclaim up to £28 in Gift Aid for every £100 donated.

Carnegie UK Trust’s Young People’s Grants
The Carnegie UK Trust's Young People's Grants Programme aims to support and promote young people's participation in
decision-making. Its focus is on involvement that is meaningful, benefits all participants and leads to sustainable
developments in young people's participation.
Carnegie YPI aims to promote the involvement of young people aged 10-25 in the key decisions that affect their lives by
influencing policy and practice throughout the UK and Ireland. Carnegie YPI has worked closely with government
departments, voluntary services and other organisations to increase policy commitment to young people's participation.
Through its strategic work and action research it helps organisations to put these policies into practice.
There are three main priorities.
Participation - projects that demonstrate a substantial involvement of young people in their planning, design, and
delivery. Projects that are initiated and run by young people will be looked on favourably;

Social and Educational Development -projects that support young people's knowledge, skills and confidence to help them
take an active part in decision-making and enable them to see how their involvement impacts on decision-making;
Empowerment -projects that enable young people to take an active and informed part in shaping decisions in their
community and society;
Inclusion - projects that demonstrate how they are supporting engagement of young people with restricted opportunities.
Sustainability - projects that aim to deliver better outcomes over the longer term and demonstrate how organisations will
continue to involve young people.
Innovation - projects that experiment and break new ground and benefit young people.
Grants will usually be up to £30,000 in total, for a maximum of three years. Grants are not available for buildings, for
recreational or sports facilities, for individuals or for schemes where there is no evidence of involving young people.

Barclays Spaces for Sports
focuses on regeneration and sports, creating sustainable sports sites for people to engage in sport and physical activities
in areas without such facilities.
They'll help local communities transform neglected land into the sporting facilities they want - from a skateboard park to a
football pitch or multi use games area. They'll also provide initial revenue funds, supply equipment and offer expert
assistance to groups to establish sporting activity on these sites..
But it's not just about creating new facilities. they will continue our help to the young teams in most need of our support
across the country by providing them with a Barclays Spaces for Sports coaching kit worth £750. This kit has everything a
team needs for coaching, from t-shirts and fleeces to cones and whistles.
Together with The Football Foundation and Groundwork, they're already working with communities to identify areas and
projects that can benefit from Barclays Spaces for Sports.
Their charity partners will identify and select all the spaces for sports.
