Martial Defender

Role Traits

Titles: Fighter, Warrior, Soldier.

Role: Defender. You use your martial abilities to protect others in your group. You can stand firm in battle longer than other the other two roles. Your proficiency with weapons makes you a fair damage dealer as well.

Power Source: Martial. You rely on training to provide you will techniques that can be used to guard your allies and damage your enemies.

Key Abilities: Strength, Constitution, Dexterity

Armor Proficiencies: Cloth, Leather, Hide, Chainmail, Scale, Plate, Light Shield, Heavy Shield

Weapon Proficiencies: Simple Melee, Military Melee, Simple Ranged, Military Ranged

Bonus to Defense: +2 to Fortitude

Hit Points at First Level: 15 + Constitution

score

Hit Points per Level Gained: 6

Healing Surges per Day: 9 + Constitution

score

Trained Skills: From the class skills list

below, choose three trained skills at 1st level.

Class Skills: Athletics (Str), Endurance (Con), Heal (Wis), Intimidate (Cha), Streetwise (Cha)

Primary Role Bonuses

Combat Control: You may mark an enemy you attack. Regardless if the attack hits or misses the target suffers a -2 mark penalty to any attacks it makes that do not include you as a target. In addition, whenever a marked enemy that is adjacent to you shifts or makes an attack that does not include you, you can make a melee basic attack against that enemy as an immediate interrupt.

Combat Readiness: You gain a bonus to opportunity attacks equal to your Dexterity modifier. An enemy struck by your opportunity attack stops moving, if a move provoked the attack. If it still has actions remaining, it can use them to resume moving.

Weapon Talent: Choose either one-handed or two-handed weapons. When using a weapon of your chosen style, you gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls.

Inspiring Defense: Once per encounter, as an immediate reaction to being bloodied by an adjacent foe, a martial defender can make a basic attack against the enemy that bloodied him. In addition, all allies that can see the attack gain temporary hit points equal to your Constitution modifier.

Martial Defender Powers

Level 1 AT-WILL Powers

Slash MD Attack 1 You hit one enemy, then slash into another.

At-Will � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage, and an enemy adjacent to you takes damage equal to your Strength modifier. Increase damage to 2[W] + Strength modifier at 21st level. Rapid Strike MD Attack 1 You follow up your initial attack with swift cuts and stabs

ensuring something will get through their defenses.

At-Will � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage. Increase damage to 2[W] + Strength modifier at 21st level. Miss: Half Strength modifier damage. If you’re wielding a two-handed weapon, you deal damage equal to your Strength modifier.

Aimed Strike MD Attack 1 You make an aimed strike sacrificing brutal energy for

careful precision.

At-Will � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength + 2 vs. AC Hit: 1[W] damage. Increase damage to 2[W] at 21st level.

Shield Smash MD Attack 1 You follow up your attack with a devastating shield smash.

At-Will � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Requirement: You must be using a shield. Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage, and you push the target 1 square if it is your size, smaller than you, or size category larger. You can shift into the space the target occupied. Increase damage to 2[W] + Strength modifier at 21st level.

Level 1 ENCOUNTER Powers

Distracting Strike MD Attack 1 You strike a vulnerable location on your enemy drawing his

attention away from allies.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 2[W] + Strength modifier damage, and an ally adjacent to the target can shift 2 squares.

Shifting Strike MD Attack 1 You strike a vulnerable location on your enemy drawing his

attention away from allies.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage, and you can shift 1 square. Make a secondary attack. Secondary Target: One creature other than the primary target Secondary Attack: Strength + 2 vs. AC Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage.

Shifting Strike MD Attack 1 You make a strike that cuts from one foe on to another.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage and you can shift 1 square. Make a secondary attack. Secondary Target: One creature other than the primary target Secondary Attack: Strength + 2 vs. AC Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage.

Brutal Smash MD Attack 1 You make a brutal overhand smash that knocks your

opponent prone.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage, and you knock the target prone.

Maiming Blow MD Attack 1 You make a strike at the enemy’s vulnerable points on his

leg, such as the knee, shin, or hamstring.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 2[W] + Strength modifier damage, and the target is slowed and cannot shift until end of your next turn.

Sure Attack MD Attack 1 You use strong technique that can be repeated until you get

a devastating result.

Invigorating Cut MD Attack 1 You make an inspiring cut that fills you with resolve and

inspires allies.

Daily � Healing, Martial, Reliable, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 2[W] + Strength modifier damage, and you can spend a healing surge. Also, all allies that can see your attack gain temporary hit points equal to your Strength modifier.

Harrowing Slash MD Attack 1 You attack your foe with feints and rapid slashes that

confuse his attempts at defending against you for the rest of

the fight.

Daily � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 2[W] + Strength modifier damage, and you gain a+2 power bonus to attack rolls and a +4 power bonus to damage rolls against the target until the end of the encounter. Miss: Gain a +1 power bonus to attack rolls and a +2 power bonus to damage rolls against the target until the end of the encounter.

Level 2 UTILITY Powers

Indomitable Will MD Utility 2 You are able to shrug off wounds and continue on fighting

with even more resolve than before.

Daily � Healing, Martial, Stance Minor Action Personal Effect: You gain regeneration 2 + your Constitution modifier when you are bloodied.

Combat Control MD Utility 2 You are able to shrug off wounds and continue on fighting

with even more resolve than before.

Encounter � Martial Move Action Melee 1 Target: One willing adjacent ally Effect: You slide the target 2 squares to a square that is adjacent to you.

Iron Defense MD Utility 2 Working your shield or weapon into a stunning blur of

defense you negate an enemy’s advantage.

Encounter � Martial Immediate Interrupt Personal Trigger: An enemy attacks you and has combat advantage against you Effect: Cancel the combat advantage you were about to grant to the attack.

Defiant Roar MD Utility 2 With a motivating shout you bolster yourself and your allies

for the coming battle.

Daily � Healing, Martial Minor Action Personal Effect: You gain temporary hit points equal to 2d6 + your Constitution modifier, and all allies that can hear you gain temporary hit points equal to your Constitution modifier.

Level 3 ENCOUNTER Powers

Puncture Armor MD Attack 3 With a savage thrust you pierce your enemy’s armor.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. Reflex Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage. Weapon: If you’re wielding a light blade or a spear, you gain a bonus to the damage roll equal to your Dexterity modifier.

Shatter Bone MD Attack 3 You make a powerful, ringing smash on your foe.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 2[W] + Strength modifier damage. Weapon: If you’re wielding an axe, a hammer, or a mace, you gain a bonus to the damage roll equal to your Constitution modifier.

Impeding Slash MD Attack 3 You slash at your enemy hindering their movement.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 2[W] + Strength modifier damage. Weapon: If you’re wielding a polearm or a heavy blade, the target is slowed until the end of your next turn

Accurate Slash MD Attack 3 You make a slash at your enemy trading power for accuracy.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength + 4 vs. AC Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage.

Rebounding Strike MD Attack 3 You strike your enemy and then immediately rebound your

weapon into them again, or another nearby foe.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC, Two Attacks Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage. Weapon: If you’re wielding a light blade, a spear, or a flail and have Dexterity 15 or higher, make a secondary attack. Secondary Target: The same or a different target Secondary Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage.

Cyclone of Steel MD Attack 3 You attack like a furious wind, buffeting all foes around you

with a spinning slash.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Close Burst 1 Target: Each enemy in burst you can see. Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage. Weapon: If you’re wielding an axe, a flail, a heavy blade, or a pick, you gain a bonus to the attack roll equal to one-half your Strength modifier. If your weapon is also two-handed add your full Strength Modifier.

Level 5 DAILY Powers

Rupture Artery MD Attack 5 You make a deep slash on your enemy that results in a gout

of blood.

Daily � Martial, Reliable, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 2[W] + Strength modifier damage, and the target takes ongoing 5 damage and a –2 penalty to AC (save ends both).

Brain Bash MD Attack 5 You smash you opponent in the head hard enough to cause

their knees to buckle.

Daily � Martial, Reliable, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 3[W] + Strength modifier damage, and the target is immobilized (save ends).

Open Opportunity MD Attack 5 This technique trains you to be aware of every possible

chance to exploit your enemy’s mistakes.

Daily � Martial, Stance, Weapon Minor Action Personal Effect: Any enemy that starts its turn adjacent to you takes 1[W] damage, as long as you are able to make opportunity attacks.

Ever Vigilant MD Attack 5 You sense a battle like a shark senses blood.

Daily � Martial No Action Personal Effect: You gain a +10 bonus to your initiative check. Use this power after rolling your initiative.

Measured Response MD Attack 5 You asses the threat and steel yourself in response.

Daily � Martial, Stance Minor Action Personal Effect: Gain a +2 power bonus to your Fortitude, Reflex, or Will defense.

Transcend Pain MD Attack 5 You are able to ignore a certain amount of pain.

Encounter � Martial Immediate Reaction Personal Trigger: You are hit by an attack. Effect: Reduce the damage from the attack by 5 + your Constitution modifier.

Level 7 ENCOUNTER Powers

Black Hole Crush MD Attack 7 You trick and feint all the enemies near you into all rushing

you at once only to face your spinning smash attack.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Close Burst 3 Target: Each enemy in burst you can see. Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage. Effect: Each target must shift 2 and end adjacent to you, if possible. A target that can’t end adjacent to you doesn’t move. You can then attack any targets that are adjacent to you (close burst 1).

Defense Overload MD Attack 7 You make a number of light strikes at your foe each doing a

small amount of cumulative damage, and overloading the

enemy’s defenses.

Encounter � Martial, Weapon Standard Action Melee Weapon Target: One Creature. Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 2[W] + Strength modifier damage, and the target takes a –2 penalty to AC until the end of your next turn.
