Il profumo delle Olimpiadi 2020 è già forte nell’aria. Dalla primavera all’autunno, passando per l’estate, in modo esponenziale è passato da fragranza a essenza.Tutti i grandi palcoscenici delle discipline del dressage, completo e salto ostacoli, le regine nel panorama dell’equitazione e, proprio perché tali, le uniche a far parte del programma a cinque cerchi, sono stati testimoni di emozionanti storie sportive vissute in chiave preolimpica.

Pochi mesi e la fiaccola olimpica tornerà in Giappone, 56 anni dopo l’edizione del ’64. Prepariamoci ad un 2020 che in un crescendo di gradi emozioni culminerà nell’appuntamento sportivo per eccellenza. L’emozione di questo clima così speciale la si percepisce chiaramente nel servizio di apertura dei nostro magazine dedicato agli Europei di Salto Ostacoli di Rotterdam.

Che il cavallo oltre che fonte di impegno, svago e di soddisfazione si confermi anche come modello di ispirazione della creatività lo confermano ad Equestrian Time le dichiarazioni di due firme illustri del mondo dell’arte: Mogol, autore dei più apprezzati cantautori che hanno fatto la storia della canzone italiana, e Toni Thorinbert, maestro della fotografia (tra moda e ritrattismo) insieme a quelle di brillanti operatori del settore quali Emanuele Fiorelli (EquiEffe) e Fabio Schiavolin (AD di Snaitech).

Forti del successo del nostro “numero zero”, usciamo alla vigilia di Fieracavalli Verona in occasione dei Grandi Premi di Autunno dell’Ippodromo di San Siro, perla dell’im-piantistica ippica nel nostro paese, trovando proprio nel racconto di alcuni aspetti di queste storiche realtà la conferma che il mondo del cavallo è vivo e attivo, crea cultura ed emozioni ed ha grande appeal anche per quei progetti di sostenibilità e studio di cui il mondo intero sembra si sia finalmente accorto.

There is already the powerful scent of the Olympic Games in the air,

and from spring to autumn, through summer, it has exponentially

changed from a fragrance to an essence.

All the great events held for dressage, eventing and show jumping,

the queens of the equestrian world and precisely because of this the

only equestrian disciplines included in the Olympic programme, have

witnessed exciting sports stories all experienced in a pre-Olympic

mood.

In just a few months the Olympic flame will return to Japan, fifty-six

years after the 1964 Games and we should prepare for a 2020 filled

with a crescendo of excitement, culminating in what is the world’s

sporting event par excellence.

The excitement felt in such a special atmosphere is clearly present

in the opening article of our magazine dedicated to the Rotterdam

European Show Jumping Championships.

The fact that horses are not just a source of commitment, recre-

ation and satisfaction, but also as models for creative inspiration,

was confirmed to Equestrian Time by the words of two very famous

members of the art world; Mogol, one of the most successful

songwriters who have made the history of Italian songs, and the ma-

estro of fashion photography and portraitism Toni Thorinbert, as well

as those of brilliant businessmen such as Emanuele Fiorelli (EquiEffe)

and Fabio Schiavolin (Snaitech’s CEO).

Encouraged by the success of our test issue, we are publishing this

one on the eve of Fieracavalli Verona during the Autumn Grand Prix

season at the San Siro Racetrack, the Italian racing world’s jewel in

the crown. It is in narrating some of the aspects of these historical

realities that one finds confirmation that the equestrian world is alive

and well, creating culture and emotions, with great appeal also for

the sustainability projects and studies that the whole world seems to

have at last become aware of.

Giulio Rapetti Mogol was born in Milan on August 17th, 1936. He started his career as a song-writer in 1961 and immediately won the Sanremo Festival with “Beyond”.In 1965 he met the composer and guitar player Lucio Battisti and they began to work together. This marked the beginning of a cooperation that took this singer-songwriter to the top of the Italian charts and to be considered one of the most important national artists of the 70s and 80s. He has written songs for Battisti, Mina, Celentano, Morandi, Tony Renis, Bobby Solo, Mango, Cocciante, Equipe 84, Dick Dick, Vanoni, Lavezzi, Gianni Bella, Dalla, Tenco, David Bowie and many others. In 1970 he completed the legendary Milan to Rome cross-country ride with Lucio Battisti and then repeated this adventure in 2005 with his wife Daniela Gimmelli, this time reversing the route on a Rome-Milan ride organized by the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation. In 1981 he founded the Italian Singers Football Team. In 1992 he founded the CET (Centro Europeo Toscolano) in Umbria, the region he chose as a home because of its beauty and authenticity settling in the municipality of Avigliano Umbro (TR). According to recent figures published by SIAE, he has sold 523 million records worldwide.

Reporter, portraitist, fashion photographer and art director, able to continuously reinvent his relationship with photography and often ahead of the times and trends, Toni Thorim-bert began to take photographs at a very young age, documenting the social and political tensions of the seventies.During the 1980s his close cooperation with the most innovative periodicals of the time, such as Max, Amica, Moda and King, was fundamental in establishing new visual stan-dards of the period. In 1995 he was awarded the Art Director Club/AFIP prize for creativity in portrait photography. At the beginning of the 1900s she founded Equi-Equipe, a company providing editorial services connected to big equestrian events. The European Championships in Rotterdam were held with an eye on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. These Championships have been the most important event on the Old Continent’s calendar ever since they were created and held every other year between two edition of the Olympics and play a fundamental role for qualifying. Olympic qualification must in fact be earned in the arena. There are few opportunities and the objective is hard to achieve, especially since there are only ten spots available for European nations. These are won at the Tryon World Championships (the top six teams), at the Rotterdam European Championships (3 among those not already qualified) and at the finals of the FEI Nations Cup in Barcelona (the best team among those still battling for a pass).

In view of the dual importance of this event, a very exciting show was almost a given in Rotterdam. Expectations were not disappointed in the choreographic white siliceous sand arena, nor wwas there a lack of coups de theatre. The surprise was the tenacity shown by the Belgian team.The gold medal went to Belgium, on the podium for the very first time in a European Championship, with silver going to Germany and bronze to Great Britain. That was the ranking for the team event in which the high stakes were played for over three days and as many tests. It all started with a Table C class in which speed and preci-

Martin Fuchs is an example of professionalism and great management of his horse. Following in his family’s footsteps, a family with undisputed status in the equestrian world (his father Thomas and his uncle Markus … both formidable riders), has been riding as a champion ever since he was on ponies, even before playing an important role among juniors and young riders. They started off with a mediocre result (11th place) to then make a fantastic come-back on day two (6th) raising morale and allowing the team to hope for a much-wan-ted pass for Tokyo, to then end with the disappointment caused by losing ground and finishing 9th at the end of the championship. Three of the Italians qualified for the individual final reserved to the best 25 and that is certainly not a feat that can be considered routine. Fieracavalli has now reached its 121st year at the Fair of Verona, confirming that it is the most prestigious event organised for the national and European equestrian world. For over a century it has been a perfect combination of passion for the world of horses, tourism, sport, breeding and entertainment. Its numbers for 2018 are the best confirmation of this success with 160,000 visitors from 60 countries, 750 exhibitors from 25 different nations, an average of 200 events energizing the fair’s 128,000 square metres with top level sports competitions such as the only Italian leg of the Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM, morphological classes, western riding competitions and educational activities. Horses? Passion and emotions…This answer seems trivial, but it is without a shred of doubt the one that, nine times out of ten, you will hear from anyone you might want to address with a question about their relationship with these noble animals.Such people include Mogol, whose real name is Giulio Rapetti, the songwriter whose professional career has been inseparably linked to that of Lucio Battisti. Horses came into his life in Brianza when the maestro was already a grownup and 35 years old. This was not a chance encounter and he says that, “I had been looking for some time for a way to approach a dream I had been following since I was a child and one that did not start in an easy way. I found it difficult to overcome the fear resulting from my first falls, which were many, and certainly caused by a form of powerful recklessness that made me attempt things far beyond my ability as a beginner. I was very determined to learn, because the feelings I experienced in the saddle motivate me more than anything else and it helped that I met the right people.” Forty years later, passion and emotions remain unchanged for the maestro. His experience as a rider has taken place far from the maddening crowds as a means of communicating with his love of nature and devoting himself above all to travels on horseback. His first adventure, closely followed by the media, involved his friend Lucio Battisti and took place in June 1970. The two of them travelled alone from Milan to Rome on an adventure that lasted three weeks and that many described their new song as “the first environmentalist gesture”. It was yet another a gigantic success; emotions.

They planned the route together and, thanks to technical and organisational supervision provided by Albert Moyersoen, a great instructor and horseman as well as the owner of an equestrian centre close to Milan, they succeeded in a feat that, documented in a daily journal written by Battisti from start to finish and published by the weekly magazine Sorrisi e Canzoni, remained as a fixed point in both their lives. Lucio Battisti, who had no experience at all on horses, was literally dragged along by his enthusiasm. “The spirit,” explained the singer to the many journalists asking him why he was going on this unusual adventure, “is that of proving to ourselves that we can do it, and that of enjoying, with no worries, real contact with nature, to cure us of all the illnesses linked to our professional lives, to rushing, to the anxiety caused by racing against time.”

The idea seemed totally bizarre to Baron Moyersoen when Mogol discussed it with him. “I told him that I wanted to buy two horses in order to make this journey and get Lucio in the saddle – he remembers – and he told me I was insane. I will always be extremely grateful to him for having changed his mind. We trained intensely riding

up to 50 km a day together with his son Filippo. Our journey resulted in a continuous series of splendid encounters, gestures of affection, incredible natural beauty, long hours spent without coming across another human being, alone with our thoughts. It was an extraordinary experience. Every evening Moyersoen, who never left Milan, joined us and took care of the horses, checking every detail of the next stage, and then returned home.”

From Carpiano, south of Milan, towards Pavia, from Castel San Giovanni towards the sea off Sarzana, near to La Spezia. They used un-used roads to Versilia, travelling on dirt roads after Castiglioncello, Cecina, Grosseto, Urbino and Capalbio, parallel to the Via Aurelia. The itinerary was not entirely planned, leaving them free to choose along the way. Of course many of those roads had not all been destroyed, as they are now. As Lucio remembers, “Roads are different on horseback, everything is different in this mostly unknown Italy we slowly explored day by day. We followed paths in the woods, dusty lanes, mountain tracks and beaches. At times, but rarely, we would come across a strip of tarmac.”

After this epic journey, Lucio Battisti never rode again, unlike Mogol who has instead always shared his great passion with his wife Daniela. Music and nature merge on the estate called Tenuta dei Ciclamini, a nature-relais that belongs to the Repetti family and is situated on the hills of Todi. There are two recording studios, a theatre

and a school for young artists and pianos in 14 rooms, but there is also an equestrian centre. “We have had up to 28 horses in our stables. Now there are only about ten, but they are totally part of our daily lives.”

This life is one that saw Mogol become Assisi’s ambassador to the Holy Father. One of the most recent great trips organised, led Mogol to the Vatican in September 2013 to present an invitation from the mayor asking the Pope to return to the Franciscan city. “I wanted to go personally to take this invitation, and so, together with other riders from all over Italy, we decided to ride along the Via Francigena, the same road travelled by St. Francis when he went to Rome with Brother Elia” says Mogol. “It was a very difficult journey, above all because there were some places in which it turned out to be quite dangerous.”As his song says, if you like you could call these emotions…

The International Equestrian Federation has included Costanza among the nomi-nations for the “Rising Star” section of the 2019 Longines FEI Awards that will be presented in Moscow on November 19th. These are the Oscars of the equestrian world and are awarded in five different areas to those who have most distinguished themselves during the year. It is a choice that pays tribute to a real achievement....Costanza Laliscia, a student from Perugia aged just twenty and enrolled in the Faculty of Sport and Motor Sciences, was the winner of the Meydan FEI European Endurance Championship held at Euston Park, Great Britain, on August 18th.The success achieved by this young rider is an exciting accomplishment if one considers that her young age qualifies her as Under 21 while this championship was “absolute” (therefore open to all age groups) as well as the fact that Italy has only once celebrated an individual gold medal in the continental championship of this discipline, eighteen years ago with Fausto Fiorucci. Costanza, who made her debut in the world of endurance at the age of 14, as early as the rules allowed, in addition to being immediately seen as an “enfant prodige” has literally taken the world of endurance by storm collecting an incredible series of amazing results. Remaining on the subject of podiums and championships and taking into account events in Italy and abroad she has collected eight gold medals, five silver and one bronze.

And one should add that ‘blood will out’! Costanza’s father, Gianluca Laliscia, is one of the most important figures of this discipline, an important member of the Italian team. He is also a trainer and organizer of international events, as well as reference point in Italy for the endurance discipline led by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice-president and prime minister of the Arab Emirates, who in addition to having a passion for thoroughbreds also shares a passion for endurance , a sport he practices together with his children.

“It was a very difficult race,” comments Costanza, “with 63 riders representing 20 nations competing on what is one of the most famous tracks in world endurance. Every athlete in a championship dreams of going for medals and I have to say that this time I started with great confidence. Sacha El Kandhaar is a very experienced horse and I have to thank Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s F3 Stables for making him available to me. From the first to the last of the 160 kilometres ridden, he showed me he wanted this medal as much as I did.” Costanza is the spearhead of the Fucsia Team, an endurance stable created by the Laliscia family, with headquarters in Agello di Magione at the Italia Endurance Stable Academy. “We called it the Fuchsia Team in honour of women who are strong in the world of equestrian sports. In our facilities, designed to meet the needs of endurance, we have been working for some years on important projects for the dissemination of our discipline and training young talents. Summer is the most important season for training and, dedicating a lot of time to our athletic training between the pool and the gym, we spend all our time there. It’s a beautiful full immersion in the sport we love, impossible in winter when there is the pressure of study commitments. It’s hard, of course, but the satisfaction of results like that of Euston Park pays off in a great way.”

To mark Fieracavalli 2019, Veronafiere S.p.A. is inaugurating the Art&Horses exhibition, a contemporary art show with an equestrian theme aimed at enhancing the image of the horse and promoting a more ethical relationship with this splendid animal, which has always been the object of artistic inspiration. The exhibition was curated by the architect and artist Federica Crestani and the Fieracavalli team, who working in collaboration have focused further attention on the theme of ethics in the equestrian context, making the works of art in the collection, “Horses of Water, Earth, Air and Fire”, the protagonists of the Fieracavalli 2019 advertising campaigns.The horse is thus elected nature’s true work of art, and, as the undisputed protagonist manifests itself by opening the exhibition through the history of the four elements to then explore the interpretations of the various participating artists.

The theme of the four Elements, the common thread in the collection of equestrian art by Crestani, will open the first edition of Art&Horses, especially with works that will be created specifically to symbolize FIRE, the manifest element of this exhibition and an allegory of the innate drive that leads artists to exteriorize what they feel through their work . The exhibition will involve a journey through the free interpretation of the various participating artists.Art&Horses will be divided into 3 sections: painting, sculpture and graphics-photography. It is open to all artists, regardless of age, nationality, or other qualifications. The works of art in each section will be selected by the organization and Fieracavalli, taking into account the characteristics of contemporary international art according to quality criteria, research and technical innovation, but the main criterion of selection will be based on the theme of an ethical-emotional interpretation of the horse and our relationship with it.

A TATTOO OF THE HEAD OF A HORSE

There is always a significant story behind a tattoo, a story involving memories, love, dreams and passions that express personal aspects and experiences that in a way become our own psychological trademark. The one decorating toni thorinbert’s arm is not a generic tattoo, but one of “his” Giacomina, a mare with no famous breeding background and with which the master of portraits spent thirty years of his life, living what he described as “an extraordinary love story.”

“I have always loved horses,” he said, “every since i was a little boy, but i only started to ride regularly when i was eighteen. Mine was a difficult passion to nurture. This is sport reserved to just a few and therefore a million miles away from my ide-ology. Things changed during the 1980s at Capalbio, in a historical moment during which equestrian sports started to spread beyond clubs and so-called countryside riding started to develop.

It was in Capalbio that i found Giacomina (Giaco). She was only six years old and when the owner of the stables started to let me ride her I became so jealous that I thought it would be a good idea to buy her.

Love at the first sight ... More than the model, I was struck by the character and sensations I felt while riding her. She was very bloody and galloped so easily that standing in the saddle she felt how happy she was in giving free rein to her natural predisposition. She was also very sweet and collaborative. Don’t ask me why, but that same day she became part of my life and left only when she died. After spen-ding a long time in the Maremma area, she followed me to milan and then found a permanent home in the country at a place owned by my brother, between parma and la spezia, where she stayed until the end of her days.”

Thorinbert was never remotely interested in the sports aspects of equestrianism, saying that, “for me horses are a specific link to nature and being able to go out hacking with Giacomina, was always a precious gift. Often, I ‘m used to ride although for many years not with her anymore and it is true that it is no longer the same thing.

He was instead really conquered by the relationship with horses. “Just like psycho-analysis, riding allowed me to gain a better understanding of myself. I believe that many of my students should take up riding for a very simple reason. When one takes a photograph of a person, the dynamics established between the subject and the photographer are similar to those between a horse and its rider. Horses force us to confront ourselves and our willpower.

Communication is at the basis of the relationship and in order to discover it one must establish the correct form. All this, however, always and only by starting to give so as to then receive. That is something that those who take photographs must be aware of and that is why during my courses i explain it clearly to my students. That too is something i learned from Giacomina”.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD AND STILL LOOKING GREAT.

The Snai San Siro racecourse was inaugurated in Milan in 1920. Designed by Paolo Vietti Violi, the architect who has created many racecourses, and not only in Italy, San Siro is about to celebrate a special anniversary in 2020. It will look perfect with its never-changing unmistakeable liberty style. On the other hand, it is no coincidence that it has been declared a monument of national interest and has been added to events organised by the Italian Environmental Foundation (FAI).The great flat races at Italian events no longer have the same enchantment, but San Siro’s charm and the selectivity of its tracks remain unchanged. It is a facility that covers over a total of about 610,000 square metres, within the far larger compound owned by Snaitech, measuring 1,500,000 square metres, an area that corresponds to about 1% of the entire Municipality of Milan. It is a real city park, a green oasis with over 2,700 trees, a small lake at the centre of the racetracks and many other attractions. It is a kingdom in which thoroughbreds do, however, reign supreme as the absolute protagonists of great races with an old tradition (to name just one, the Oaks, the Derby for fillies). It is a place to which, in recent years, attempts have been made to bring back the public of the good old racing days, when there was hardly enough room in the stands for the many fans of the “sport of kings” and the difficult finishing straight of San Siro launched the legendary Ribot towards his great wins all over Europe.The stables are always filled with important horses and trainers, the leading players in the spring, the summer and the autumn seasons of flat racing as well as steeple chasing. Snaitech, the group that owns the racetrack and the entire compound, has worked hard in recent years to re-launch racing and not only that, to ensure that San Siro returns to be a central attraction for Milan. Multi-functionality is the key word at the centre of many initiatives, combined with entertainment. Racing is at the centre of everything and with so much surrounding it so that people experience can this racetrack in a global manner.A great deal has been done and there is still much to do; San Siro is about to celebra-te its one hundredth anniversary, but what matters is that it does not look at all old.

ARTLeonardo’s Horse has become the trademark of the Snai San Siro Racetrack. Placed in the square outside the entrance to the secondary stands, it is one of the largest equestrian sculptures in the world, standing at 7.3 metres and weighing almost 10 tons. Created in bronze in 1999 by the American artist Nina Akamu, it was inspired by an equestrian monument designed by Leonardo da Vinci at the end of the 15th century. The great maestro only made one model in clay and the original drawings are preserved at Windsor Castle in England. The statue was presented to the city of Milan by the Leonardo da Vinci’s Horse Foundation.

NATUREA park within a park, the Snai San Siro racetrack hosts 55 botanical species and each one has been registered and tagged. This all began in the first half of the last century thanks to the passion of Counts Durini and Turati, who assigned various areas to precious rarities that were to be safeguarded. Furthermore, the racing world boasts a tradition of trees that have been given to racetracks by the owners of horses that have won the most important races. Rare ones in Milan include the century-old wisteria that climbs over the Palazzina del Peso [The Weighing Room] and the cherry tree in the saddling enclosure, a gift from the Japan Racing Association.

MUSICFor the third year in a row, Snai San Siro hosted the Milano Summer Festival. In July and August, months during which races are not held, the racetrack hosted impor-tant concerts that attracted thousands of fans of famous Italian and international musicians. The 2019 season’s main performers were Kiss, Metallica and Ben Harper as well as Calcutta and Carl Brave.

FOUR QUESTIONS FOR SNAITECH’S CEO FABIO SCHIAVOLIN

San Siro is about to celebrate its one hundredth anniversary, what are the expectations for 2020?“We will move forward with the projects implemented so far, improve the objectives achieved and pursue further improvements. The main objective remains that of attracting increasingly larger numbers of people to the racetrack, broadening our target race-goers. Racing and horses remain at the centre of Snaitech’s strategy, but the entire facility must also be an important reference for art, culture and entertainment.”

With horses always remaining its focus?“San Siro is a true model for re-launching racing and obviously flat racing in particular. It is a unique location in its genre, inimitable and appreciated at an international level with selective tracks, including steeplechase courses that made history in this sport. So horses are always at the centre of everything with races guaranteeing quality and entertainment. It is, however, essential that we re-launch interest in racing with betting reform so as to return competiveness to a long forgotten sector and recreate love lost through better knowledge of racing itself.”

What about the racecourse?“That is precisely the focus of our work; San Siro as a place to be fully experienced, at every moment, where the people of Milan and others from all over can enjoy the many areas available. We must also make sure we hang on to racing spectators who have never abandoned the racecourse and bring back those who may have become disenchanted as well as allowing newcomers to discover this location, paying particular attention to children and the new generations.”

What is the philosophy of the hashtag #ScopriSanSiro?“Three years ago we envisaged this itinerary organised as thematic areas, aimed at revealing San Siro’s historical and most enchanting places, starting with the Palazzina del Peso (The Weighing in House) and continuing with all the others. We also organised special events, artistic initiatives and partnerships above all with schools. Over three years 500,000 people were provided with a chance to discover and get to know our wonderful racecourse.”

Welcome back Dormello Olgiata! The most glorious and historical racing stable in Italian flat racing, that of the legendary Ribot and many other champions bred and owned first by Federico Tesio and then by the Incisa della Rocchetta family, had never really gone away. The numbers linked to the famous Bolgheri estate, however, indicated very heavy going; 42 years since their last win in the Italian Oaks (Zabarella in 1977), 39 years since the stables won their last classic (the Derby, with Garrido in 1980)and 22 since the last group race was won (Premio Città di Napoli, with Ravier in 1977. Numbers that really did not honour the most famous and oldest colours in Italian racing; white with the cross of St. Andrew and a red cap.On Sunday June 23rd, at the Milan San Siro racetrack, 3-year old Lamaire luckily ran in the Oaks and swept away all these very hard to digest numbers. She was trained by Riccardo Santini from Livorno, who in the peaceful atmosphere of Bolgheri is now at last the only man in command, and thanks to the significant expertise of Franca Vittadini, who for the past three years has been the manager of the red and white stud (the main base remains on Lake Maggiore in Piedmont at Dormelletto) and for the past six months has also been the fulltime manager of the stables.For a long time, for far too long, the efforts made by the Dormello Olgiata were lost amidst inadequate results compared to the never lacking efforts. This, in spite of the fact that for some time, as expected, it has been the production of the Sassicaia at the San Guido estate that has occupied the attention of 83-year old Marquis Niccolò, who likes to concentrate on his precious and famous red wine, “the Ribot of wines”. There had been signs of a revival over recent years, with Duchamp finishing second in the 2011 Parioli and a third place finish by Louise Aron in the 2012 Regina Elena. One of their horses, Rottmayer, entrusted in France to the trainer Pascal Bary, was even the favourite in the 2013 Derby, but was an unlucky protagonist at the Capan-nelle racetrack (tenth and last but one, due to a physical problem during the race). Time seemed wrapped in a great deal of anonymity for a stable that now, following an inevitable and necessary selection, only has a dozen brood mares and about thirty horses in training, half of them yearlings.Lamaire, just like Duchamp, Louise Aron and Rottmayer, is a born and bred Dormello Olgiata racehorse, representing one of their historical bloodlines, one dating back to the days of Laura Russell (that was in the 1970s. In the Oaks she was ridden by the “little magician” Fabio Branca, who after leaving the Incolinx stables now rides mainly for the Dormello Olgiata. Branca took an immense risk, coming from the outside first past the German runner Apadanah and then Call Me Love. But it clearly was really the right day for annulling all those numbers weighing on the Dormello Olgiata stables.Many foreign buyers showed interest in Lamaire after the Oaks, but the Dormello Olgiata is not a commercial stable; the Oaks winner will only leave Bolgheri to race and her future as a broodmare will remain with the Dormello Olgiata.

The Dormello Olgiata stables are the most famous in Italian racing with over a century of history, started by Federico Tesio and his wife Lydia they then became the property of the Marquises Incisa della Rocchetta. With their jockeys wearing their famous red and white colours, the stables produced champions such as Cavaliere d’Arpino, Donatello and Nearco, but above all Ribot, a name that remains a legend. Born in 1952, sired by Tenerani and whose dam was Romanella, Ribot was unbeaten during his racing career, winning all 16 races he ran in between the ages of two and four. His extraordinary achievements include victories in two Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp (1955 and 1956) as well as the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot (1956). His name was chosen by Tesio, in honour of the French artist Thèodule Augustin Ribot.

The Gorla Minore EquiEffe Equestrian Centre presents an important programme with forty weeks of show jumping events every year. Even this first piece of information should be enough to arose curiosity and amazement, indicating even to those with no expertise at all as far as horses and shows are concerned, that an immense amount of work is required to support such intense activity and one that has increased year after year.This programme is wide ranging, because it involves the entire world of show jum-ping, from horses and ponies ridden by the very young, especially those in northern Italy excitedly making their debut in the world of competitive sport, to the cham-pions riding in the top circuit who, constantly touring the world, find it hard when programming their year to choose from the ever growing list of events and circuits on the international calendar. Confirmation that this centre has prerogatives of true excellence is confirmed by the fact that one regularly comes across the names of legendary riders and coaches such as Steve Guerdat, Martin Fuchs, John Whitaker, Roger Yves Bost, or Michel Robert in the lists of those competing at EquiEffe.

Emanuele Fiorelli, born in 1966 in the Marche Region, but a Lombard by adoption since he was five years old, is the owner of this equestrian centre, but is above all its Deus ex machina. Professionalism, hard work, a profound knowledge of the technical and organisational skills linked to the world of show jumping, have always been his hallmark and the appreciation expressed by his most important foreign colleagues is the reward that interests him most. “Their compliments and loyalty are what fuels our work. I was a top level international rider for fifteen years [between the age of twenty and thirty-five he rode in 24 Nations Cups also at important venues such as Rome, Hickstead, Rotterdam and La Baule, 12 times at the Rome Piazza di Siena CSIO and various shows in the FEI World Cup, Editor’s Note] but when I realised that my best horses had come to the end of their careers and how difficult it was to stay at that level, I chose to hang up my boots and devote myself to a different professio-nal project in the show jumping world. That marked the beginning of EquiEffe. This equestrian centre was built at the beginning of the 1990s by the Sozzi family and called La Pamina in honour of Valerio’s top horse. I bought it in 2011 after it had been closed for some time.”

Fiorelli has implemented very specific guidelines in the planning of the centre and above all in its management. “I have always only reasoned more as a rider than as an event organiser, setting quality rather than quantity as my priority. I obviously knew what criteria were applied by those who are the main actors rather than entre-preneurs in this sport and I immediately chose to lower the number of participants at the shows so as to guarantee better services and provide them with a lifestyle with less pressure. We ensured that daily life was comfortable thanks to a logistical and sporting organisation that was studied in every detail to guarantee the wellbeing of the horses, the riders and everyone involved. All the jumping here takes place indo-ors and obviously that is a great advantage, especially during the winter season.

There are 570 stables for shows, two arenas (100 metres x 60 metres and 130 metres x 100 metres), one indoor arena (70 metres x 40 metres) also used as the collecting ring in the summer season. In addition to these, there is a 100 metre x 40 metre collecting ring for the main arena, a tensile structure measuring 60 metres x 40 metres for lunging horses and a second slightly smaller indoor arena.”Obviously EquiEffe’s success has been ongoing. Fiorelli ideas are clear but he is certainly not the sort of person who rushes matters unless there are very specific reasons. “I started by organising small 2* and 3* shows and then only in the past two years did we start to organise a circuit that inaugurated the season with the Milano Jumping Challenge, lasting five weeks between March and April, and one early in the autumn, the three-week long EquiEffe Classic. The calendar also includes a two-we-ek long indoor show in November and a CSIO Youth.”

The equestrian centre and show planning has evolved continuously and there are increasingly qualified and ambitious short term plans. “Next year will mark the debut of our new grass arena. It is going to be wonderful and was built with the greatest possible attention. There are great expectations and I am sure that it will turn out to be a great surprise for everyone. It is very large (200 m x 180 m) and we will use it carefully.”

CHARITY AND THE ROMA POLO CLUB: A SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIP

The spotlight has repeatedly been focused on polo and charity this year at the Roma Polo Club. The Italian capital’s ancient club, the cradle of this sport in Italy, proved to be the ideal setting for two events that organised fundraising for Sentebale and for Operation Smile. Sport, glamour, sophistication and a location with particular charm were the winning elements of two days worth remembering...

On May 24th, His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex, known to most as Prince Har-ry and always very committed to charity work, was an exceptional testimonial in the annual ISPS Handa Polo Cup game organized by Sentebale, the charity he created with Prince Seeiso Breng Seeiso of Lesotho to fight HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. Wea-ring the St. Regis colours, Prince Harry’s team beat the U.S. Polo Association, in front of the very elegant guests who crowded the Roman club for an occasion involving serious security to protect players and members from curious crows and the many television crews. In 1951, as shown by the splendid period photographs on display in the club house, the Roma Polo Club had the honour of hosting Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip who captained the British team on the pitch at Acqua Acetosa. At the end of September, the second event attended by hundreds of guests was with the seventh edition of ‘Polo del Sorriso’ (Smile Pole) supporting Operation Smile, the organization that raises funds for operating on children with facial deformities all over the world.

This was a great event, perfectly organized by a committee of efficient volunteers chaired by Flaminia Elser, and included a Carabinieri fanfare, two opera singers, the Police dog group, exhibition stands, and a prize for the best dressed lady, as the backdrop for two exciting matches. Guests of honour of included the President of Roma Polo Club, Cataldo D’Andria, the founders of Operation Smile, Bill Magee and his wife Kathy, who were visiting Rome from Virginia Beach, and the President of Fondazione Smile Italia Onlus, Carlo Salvatori.

POLO IN ITALY: A BIT OF HISTORY.

The history of polo in Italy dates back to the 1920s, when Carlo Kupelwieser foun-ded the first polo club with two playing fields on the island of Brijuni, now Croatia. It was instead His Royal Highness the Duke of Spoleto who created the first Polo Club in Rome in 1930. In Rome there was already a group of players who had atten-ded the club of the island of Brioni. There were players who owned their own horses but there was no field.

The ‘Società Corse al Trotto’ solved the problem by making available the racetrack at Villa Glori which, during the 1960 Rome Olympics, gave way to the construction of the Olympic village. the intervention of a specialized technician was required To transform the lawn of the racecourse into a polo field,. Polo made its debut there on May 10, 1930 with a series of spectacular high-level matches. Later on, the ‘Roma Polo Club’ obtained a piece of land not far from there, at Acqua Acetosa where the current club stands, now incorporated in the centre of the capital.
