Dear Friends,

As we get closer to our 60th anniversary (Ettie Lee was founded in 1950), more than ever we appreciate, you, our supporters. You have always made it possible for us to work with abused, neglected and abandoned youth in our communities. It has been our unwavering mission and we will always value your contributions, participation and feedback.

We are in a unique position to help our youth. We understand that children are growing up in increasingly dangerous communities. We understand that children need to be loved. We understand that children need to have positive role models. We understand that children need to learn new ways to manage their anger. We understand that children need to feel respected. With your help we are able to continually strive for each child to be safe, in school, out of trouble, and either in or working toward living in a permanent family environment.

We have been able to accomplish so much because of your help during this year. Some of the highlights of our busy year include:

•Forming an Individualized Education Program for at-risk youth in a contained environment designed so that each youth has the opportunity to catch up in school and graduate on time

•Reactivating our adoption license allowing us to finalize sevenadoptions

•Receiving full support of our evidence-based treatment program from the Los Angeles Probation Department

•Spending more time with youngsters due to the implementation of an efficient computerized record system

•Honoring home parents Kathy and Dean Binks for 40 years of service at Ettie Lee

As we conclude our year, we remain grateful to our families, partners and supporters for your continued commitment to help the youth in our communities. Together we are saving lives, changing lives and bringing hope for vulnerable children and their families.

Fondly,

Our adoption license was reactivated in late 2007. In the

months that followed the reactivation, we are proud to report that Ettie Lee finalized seven adoptions. Seven children were placed in their new homes! Congratulations to the new families.

In partnership with Opportunities for Learning, our new

Individualized Education Program was up and running on October 1, 2007. Although the staff and students experienced a natural learning curve, this self-contained school for our at-risk youth provides an opportunity for the young men to catch up in school and graduate on time. This fully accredited school, provides the Ettie Lee resident the opportunity to gain back lost credits because of poor attendance or not completing work in past years. In addition, since it is self contained, we are able to more closely monitor the young men and, as you might imagine, there are much less disturbances due to illegal substances.

Ettie Lee HighlightsEttie Lee Highlights

Our technology has been fully leveraged by automating

some of the previously duplicative processes and allowing our professional staff to spend more time enhancing services for children and families. This increased face-to-face time will result in saving lives, building hope and positively impacting future generations. Our research tells us the amount of time our professional staff spend with the children and their families directly correlates with their successful return to their own homes.

There is a direct correlation between mental health issues

and youth who become involved with the juvenile justice system. Our Evidence-based treatment program has received full support from the Los Angeles Probation Department. In an article by Mike O'Sullivan published in 2004, he states that “Police Urge Mental Health Treatment for Young Offenders.” Mr. Sullivan goes on to report that California police officials are asking that more money be spent on mental health care for young offenders as they recognize that counseling and treatment can dramatically reduce juvenile crime rates.

In addition, these officials say at least 80 percent of young offenders have identifiable mental health disorders, and that proper treatment can reduce juvenile arrests by as much as one third. Speaking at a news conference with other police officials, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca said mental health care is lacking for young offenders. "Those of us in law enforcement see this as a crime prevention tool, as a way of helping young people get back on their feet and not spiral down into the abyss of mental illness.”

Long-time home parents Dean and Kathy Binks celebrated

their 40th anniversary with Ettie Lee Youth & Family Services. Hired by Ms. Ettie Lee herself in the late 1960’s, Dean and Kathy are the last set of home parents employed at Ettie Lee. Dean and Kathy (they are known as Mom and Pop) have been Mom and Pop to more than 600 vulnerable young boys at their home in Fontana. Dean and Kathy’s four children and eleven grandchildren are also involved in helping out at the home.

“So many good things in my life happened because of the relationships, respect and over all training I was given while in the Ettie Lee boys home. They helped me to stand on my own two feet, always putting my best foot forward. I was taught to do a job to the best of my ability whether it was oral hygiene or school or even

cutting the grass. If it wasn't for Ettie Lee Youth & Family Services I would be dead, or in jail or at best would be a bag man living on the street. I owe Ettie Lee so much more than I could put into words.”

Dear Ettie Lee Youth & Family Services,

I thought I would drop you a letter to let you and your staff know how much Jennifer and I appreciate all of the help and support we received from you. All of you. It is not very often that we get to hear about success stories and know that we played such an important part in making it all happen.

Jorge, age 12 and Anita, age 13 are doing great. Jorge has become a well adjusted normal, fun-loving son, child, boy scout, student and brother. He is normal in most respects. The ones that are important. He has been off drugs for almost a year and a half. Jorge would have become a statistic without the help of you and your staff. Jorge and Anita are the best things that have ever come into my life, besides Jennifer, and I am grateful.

Life in Utah is really great. Very little crime and very little or no graffiti. Kind of what life was like back in the sixties! The kids both have over a 3.5 GPA in school and only a couple of calls from the principal! That’s normal. These two children have made my life really great. They keep me young. Jennifer keeps me young. I feel like I have a new lease on life and that this is my second life after business and such. I play a little less golf, less than I expected because I would rather be home serving my family in a way that they will be pleased.

I again stress to you that without your help and the help of your staff none of these things would have come to be. I want you to be proud of all you have accomplished in helping Jennifer, Jorge and Anita, and what a positive change this has made in my life. The greatest gift any of us can receive is knowing that we have changed or helped changed from bad to good someone else’s life. In our case it wasn’t just one person but four people. You are to be commended and I just wanted to take time to write you and let you know what a wonderful thing you have done in helping us to become a somewhat normal family.

I would just like you to let your staff know how successful they all were in helping us move forward. Ettie Lee has changed our lives forever in a positive way. Thank you and may God Bless you all, your family, staff and friends. Keep it up. What you are doing works!

Sincerely,

Jay A. & Jennifer Freeman
