2009. 240 pp. A comprehensive book of oboe technique, describing in detail all aspects of playing music on

the oboe. The book includes chapters on reed making, practicing, and professional deportment in addition to detailed descriptions of basic techniques. This is the first new book of its kind published in English in nearly fifty years. Issued in paperback and hardcover editions.

2008 Walsh, Linda. The Oboe Reed Making DVD. A two-hour instructional video by Australian oboist Linda Walsh, interviewing

international soloists and technical experts about their methods of oboe reed making. Martin Schuring describes the American style of reed making and the difference between that style and the international one. Players interviewed on the DVD include François Leleux, Nicholas Daniel, and David Walter, among others.

2007 and 2008 Recorded All-State and Regionals etudes for the ASU CMENC chapter. Any interested high school player can download these as a reference.

Festival Internacional de Flauta – Monterrey, Mexico. Taught daily master classes and performed as soloist at this week-long festival for flute,

Professional Service

Service to the International Double Reed Society The International Double Reed Society is the professional organization for oboe and

bassoon players worldwide. Membership is approximately 4,000 musicians around the world. The Society serves its membership with a quartely publication of about 200 pages (“The Double Reed”), a very substantial web page (idrs.org), and an annual international conference. In addition, we sponsor two competitions for young performers and have commissioned numerous works from composers such as Thea Musgrave, Libby Larsen, Jean Françaix, and others. I have served the Society in many capacities, listed below.

2011 Host of the 2011 International Double Reed Society Conference. ASU has been selected as the site for the 2011 annual Conference. This five-day event

will attract approximately 1,000 musicians from around the world to our campus. Dr. Albie Micklich and I are hosting this event. To my knowledge, this is the only time that the same institution has been selected to host the Conference twice (see 1998). For reference, the 2010 program may be viewed at http://idrs2010.org/.

2010 – present President, International Double Reed Society. Presidents serve two consecutive two-year terms, so my tenure will end in December, 2013. 2006 – 2009 First Vice President (President-elect). 2006 – 2009 Coordinator, Sponsor-a-member Program. IDRS matches needy musicians with members who sponsor their membership in the

Society. Approximately 50 people around the world receive free membership through this program.

2003 – 2009 Chair, Honorary Membership Committee. Honorary membership is the Society’s “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Each year, one

oboist and one bassoonist are selected from nominations received from the membership. 2001 – present Associate Editor (oboe), The Double Reed. The quarterly publication of the International Double Reed Society. I advise on content

and policy, ultimately succeeding to the editorship when the current editor chooses to retire. 2002 – 2005 Secretary. This is an elected, voting position on the executive committee of the Society. 2000 Member, Honorary Membership Committee. 1999 Judge for the Fernand Gillet Competition (preliminary round) The young artist competition of the International Double Reed Society with international

constestants and a (then) $5,000 first prize. With an age limit of 30, these are very highly skilled players.

1998 Host of the 1998 International Double Reed Society Conference The five-day annual conference of the 5,000-member IDRS. Events included more than

fifty performances, as well as exhibits, master classes and lectures at the ASU School of Music. Nearly 800 registrants, performers, and exhibitors attended.

Service to The Grand Teton Music Festival The Grand Teton Music Festival is a seven-week summer festival based in Teton Village,

WY and founded in 1962. I have been performing there since 1980. Current annual budget is approximately $4 million. The music director is Donald Runnicles, also music director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Chief Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. In addition to my many performances at the Festival, I have served in the following capacities:

2008 – present Member, Board of Directors. I was honored to be elected to the board of the Festival as a voting member participating in

all policy, planning, and budget discussions. 2009 – present Member, Long Range Planning Committee. 2006 – present Member, Artistic Committee. A sub-committee of the board with responsibility for advising on artistic questions relating to

repertoire, guest artists, scheduling, and future strategic planning fulfilling the Festival’s vision.

2006 – 2009 Chamber Music Coordinator. Duties included planning of programs, organization of personnel, musical liaison with music director Donald Runnicles, and overall production of a chamber music season of approximately 13 concerts in a seven–week festival.

2000 – 2006 Player’s Board (Chair, 2003-2006). The Player’s Board is elected by the musicians to represent them to the administration and

the board of directors. 1991 – 1993 Chamber Music Coordinator. Duties included planning of programs, organization of personnel, musical liaison with the

artistic director, and overall production of a chamber music season of approximately 25 concerts in an eight-week festival.
