Welcome . . . I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to our 20th Anniversary Year Celebrations by making a donation, organising or attending an event. Thank you also to our wonderful volunteers. It is your continued generosity and support which ensures that the Hospice is able to provide the best quality of care to our patients and their families when they need it the most. Hospices are traditionally viewed as providers of specialist care for patients with complex needs towards the end of their lives - and while that is still a major part of what we do, we also strive to make our expertise in care more widely available to those in need across the locality. Returning to patients with complex needs at the end of their lives; a recent national survey found that approximately 70% of adults in this category would prefer to be cared for at home at the end of life, with the appropriate specialist care, with dignity, in their familiar environment and surrounded by their loved ones. This is where the Mary Ann Evans Hospice concentrates it’s efforts and truly excels via it’s Hospice at Home Service. This is a wonderful service, greatly appreciated by patients and families alike, delivered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by highly experienced, dedicated staff. At present approximately 80% of our end of life patients are enabled to die in their own homes with their families around them. This is a wonderful achievement against a national level of only 25%. This service will continue to be the focus of our care strategy. The Hospice receives many, many letters of thanks from relatives and carers.One such relative said “You allowed Mum to maintain her dignity and pride right to the end of her life and we will always be eternally grateful for that. It was the little things you did that made all the difference and I can honestly say that to us, you became part of our family for the three months you cared for Mum”. It is this service along with the other services; Day Hospice, Bereavement and Lymphoedema that makes us all proud to be associated with the Mary Ann Evans Hospice and which makes the Hospice truly the local service for adult end of life care. In-patient hospice care will continue to be required for a small number of patients, when no alternative is available. As the Hospice at Home service continues to grow, hopefully this can be reduced even further. However, the Recession has finally hit the Mary Ann Evans Hospice which makes our ability to raise funds more and more challenging. Over 72% of our required funds must come from voluntary contributions, fund raising and our charity shops. Please remember the Mary Ann Evans Hospice and continue to support us in any way possible. Where your money goes and why we need it...There are a lot of people in the community who would be surprised to learn how much it actually costs to run certain aspects of the Hospice. Hopefully, the figures below will provide an insight into where the much needed funds that you raise are used. Without the generous donations, the Hospice could not provide enough care for it’s patients and their families.

In 2012 it will cost approx £730,000 to run the Mary Ann Evans Hospice services, which equates to £2,000 per day. Only 28% of this comes from the local Health Service, which is enough funding to support the Hospice for 102 days. We, therefore, appreciate the generosity of the communities we serve to raise the additional £1,500 every day for the remaining days. We are only able to continue providing the services because of your continued support. On behalf of our patients we would like to say a big, big THANK YOU!

Day Care for a day The Day Hospice provides care for up to 15 patients per day which is holistic and life enhancing, helping people to adjust to illness and increase their self-confidence. Patients who come to the Day Hospice are given care and support from a professional team and from other patients who may have had similar experiences. The team includes nursing and other health professionals, ambulance drivers, therapists and Chaplaincy.

Transport servicesfor a monthMany patients are brought to the Hospice by volunteer drivers. Volunteer Doreen said “It’s such a privelege to be able to help and know you are making a difference to a patients day.” Transport can also be provided by Hospice mini bus, the ambulance service and in some cases patient’s families and sometimes patients themselves.

Hospice at Home for a dayThis excellent and developing service provides respite and end of life support 365 days to both the patient and their carer/family. One family member said “ I think the work you do is phenomenal. You look death in the face every day yet manage to be cheerful and happy. We also felt your care extended to us, the family and we never felt that we were putting you out if we needed to talk or have a cry about the situation”.

Patients’ meals for a dayThe Catering team work to provide appetising and nutritious meals to suit patients needs and tastes, often serving up requested favourites to tempt the taste buds.

Lymphoedema care The Lymphoedema team provide specialist care and hosiery at the Day Hospice and at certain times to patients in their own homes. All the patients have developed Lymphoedema following cancer treatment. The care they receive provides great relief from very uncomfortable symptoms.

Sunflower Festival Fortnight

8th – 22nd September Once again in conjunction with the Nuneaton Town Centre Management, local businesses will be brightening up the Town Centre with a Shop Window Competition. The launch will take place on September 8th with judging taking place on Saturday 22nd by judges, Marcus Jones MP and Hospice Patrons, Kay Alexander & Rosie Goodwin.

We are also joining forces with ‘Art Alert’ for a Sunflower Competition (any medium) to be displayed and judged during Sunflower Festival Fortnight.

A ‘Spot the Sunflower Trail’ will also take place in August.

TAkE YOuR SINGING OuT OF THE SHOWERAND INTO OuR CHOIR.

We are looking for budding amateur singers to form a choir as part of an exciting new challenge!

You will receive 12 weeks of free tuition on Wednesday evenings, starting September 5th, 7.15 - 9.00pm at the Mary Ann Evans Hospice. In exchange for the tuition each person will be expected to raise £100 in sponsorship and sell tickets to the final concert performance at the Abbey Theatre, Nuneaton, Saturday 24th November. Along with your fellow choir members we hope you will be joined by a few well known voices.

What a difference a day makes

It costs £2,000 per day to run the Hospice Services

Clinical Services Manager – Maggi provides leadership and support to the nursing staff in the care of patients and support to their families, both in the Day Hospice and with Hospice at Home and Lymphoedema.

Facilities – Dave is responsible for the Hospice site and the Hospice shops in terms of routine maintenance of the buildings and garden along with Karon for the housekeeping duties.

Chaplain – Gill works with patients, staff and volunteers offering support and a listening ear. The Bereavement Support Team led by Gill with a team of volunteers have one-to-one and group support, as well as monthly afternoon tea.

Volunteer Receptionists are often the first point of contact for patients and visitors when they telephone or visit the Hospice. Like all the volunteers, they bring a variety of expertise and experience to their roles, but all share a common enthusiasm and commitment to Hospice care.

Fundraising Manager – Janet and her team have strong links with local community groups and supporters and organise fundraising events and projects such as Santa’s Mile, Lights of Love and Strictly Learn to Dance. The Team must continually think up new and innovative ways to raise much needed funds for the Hospice to be able to continue the caring.

Patient Sylvia kindly agreed to be part of the photograph, as she says she really benefits from being part of the Mary Ann Evans Hospice story.

Lymphoedema Care – Kay, Nicky and Karen provide treatments to patients who have developed Lymphoedema as a result of cancer treatment. With specialist hosiery and gentle massage the patients can gain great relief from their symptoms.

Shops – we have 5 charity shops selling high quality clothes, toys, bric-a-brac, books and bedding. They are worth a visit to find a bargain or to donate any items which you no longer need.

At the Mary Ann Evans Hospice effective team working is vital to ensure the patient and their family remains at the centre of everything we do. The TEAM acronym for Together Everyone Achieves More highlights how we all need each other, even YOu. Your support adds to the success of the Mary Ann Evans Hospice.

What a difference a day makesChief Executive – Liz is responsible for the day-to-day running of all the charity’s activities and holds the delegated responsibility from the Board of Directors. She ensures that every penny received is used cost effectively.

Cook – Heather is responsible for planning the menus for day patients, adhering to Health & Safety and environmental standards. The Cook works with a team of volunteers in providing a high quality of delicious catering.

Chaplain – Gill works with patients, staff and volunteers offering support and a listening ear. The Bereavement Support Team led by Gill with a team of volunteers have one-to-one and group support, as well as monthly afternoon tea.

The Volunteer Drivers transport patients to and from the Day Hospice.

Activities Co-Ordinator – Teresa works directly with patients providing the opportunities to develop or extend creative skills. For many patients it is a time to learn new skills and for some to revisit past interests.

Volunteers - Provide invaluable support to the whole of the organisation every day of the year. Volunteers work in the Day Hospice, Fundraising Department, five Hospice shops, garden and driving patients to and from their homes.

Doctor – Julia Grant is a key member of the clinical staff who works across all clinical departments; Day Hospice, Hospice at Home, Lymphoedema and Community Palliative Care Team and also at the George Eliot Hospital. Palliative care is all about holistic care, caring for the person, working out what their priorities and concerns are and trying to address those needs to improve the quality of life for that individual and their family.

No one service can meet all of a patient’s needs or answer all of their questions. This is why the whole palliative care team which includes the Mary Ann Evans Hospice team and the North Warwickshire Community Palliative Care Team Nurse meet regularly to think about difficult issues for patients. We work closely with other professionals in the hospital and community including hospital consultants and hospital ward teams, GP’s and District Nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians, speech and language therapists, pharmacists, occupational therapists and benefits advisors.

Teamwork is essential if we are to ensure that our patients receive good palliative care, but central to that team is the patient and the people that are most important to them.Hospice at Home Team Leader Anita

coordinates care for patients in their own home, whether it is for respite care or end of life support. The service is available 7 days a week 7.00am -10.00pm and there is a limited night service from 10.00pm – 7.00am.

Yes, we had Cancer, we received treatment and fortunately we are now ‘Survivors’. We have set the group up with the support of the Mary Ann Evans Hospice staff. In the first instance it was to help people with physical and emotional

issues after Cancer treatment and everything else that follows. Now the aim of the group has extended to provide a support service in a warm and friendly environment, allowing people to share their experiences of living beyond diagnosis.

Group member Jane said “I am a surviving Cancer patient. At first when I was going through chemo and radiotherapy, my support network was great, but as time went on I felt very much on my own with fears and worries that this illness brings. Talking to other people, I have discovered that they have the same concerns and a worry shared is a worry halved”. We hold regular meeting at the Horseshoes Pub in Heath End Road, close to the Hospice. We meet on the last Tuesday of the month between 5 – 7pm. For further details ring Nurse Liz on 024 7686 5451

Every Penny Counts

Making a donation in memory of a loved one is a special way to honour their life and can be a wonderful way for friends and family to join you in celebration of their life. The donations in memory of loved ones also play a key role in supporting our work and whilst flowers fade, donations to the Hospice will be a lasting gift and will have a real impact on the lives of local people.

We have created Hospice Gift envelopes which can be used when people make their donations. The envelopes make it easy for your friends and family to make their donation and also to Gift Aid it, making it worth even more to the Hospice without costing a penny.

If you choose to nominate the Mary Ann Evans Hospice to receive donations in memory of your loved one in lieu of flowers, please contact us if you wish to use Gift Aid envelopes. Once we have received the donations from family and friends we will inform you of the total amount of donations collected.

‘Ribbons of Love’ is a bright and positive way of celebrating a special person in your life.

There will be an area in the Hospice garden splashed with colour throughout the summer, with each length of colourful ribbon meaning something special to someone. In return for a donation to the ‘Ribbons of Love’ appeal, you will receive a length of brightly coloured ribbon for you to write your own special personal message for someone who has brought colour to your life.

The ‘Ribbons of Love’ will remain on display throughout the summer months, bringing brightness and colour for everyone visiting our garden.

Donations inlieu of flowers Those immortal words “how time flies” are very true as I look back on my first year at the Hospice. I have the privilege of wearing two

hats which encompass Chaplaincy and Bereavement.

My role as Chaplain at the Hospice is to be the listening ear for the patients; their families, staff and volunteers. As you can imagine this makes my day very varied. At times it may involve me ‘bridging the gap’ for when our patients are not physically able to be at the Hospice for a period of time. Recently a small number of volunteers have joined the Chaplaincy team to help with hospital visits and taking informal services.

The Bereavement Department has undergone a number of changes in the past six months and we are now able to offer the following services:

One to one sessions - some people appreciate being offered quality time on a regular basis, with one of the Bereavement volunteers. The volunteers offer a listening ear, on a weekly or fortnightly basis.

ZIG-ZAG Group - is for people who prefer to meet up in a group environment. This helps them to share similar experiences and begin to get to know others. This group meets at the Hospice on the last Tuesday of the month from 10.00 – 11.30am.

JIGSAW Group - is for people who prefer some social support. They are invited to the Hospice on the last Tuesday of the month from 2 - 3.30pm for afternoon tea and an opportunity for a more informal chat in small groups.

Someone who has benefitted from the changes made to the Bereavement service thanked us for “providing the candle to light my way over the past few months and most of all thank you for just being there.”

We also offer the larger Bereavement services twice a year as you see below. This year both events will be held in the Hospice grounds and you are welcome to join us.

Highs and Lows of Fundraising this year‘Strictly’ FunA real high in the fundraising calendar and for many would be ‘dancers’ was the return of ‘Strictly Learn to Dance’ when 12 couples pledged their support to 12 weeks of dancing lessons provided free by the Nuneaton Dance Centre. The training had its highs and lows but the finale was a glamour filled competition performed to a capacity audience at the Civic Hall in Bedworth. Tess Daley aka Jacqueline Leake said “What an amazing night it was, a fabulous experience and to raise the wonderful sum of £17,000 was just a tremendous effort from all involved.”

What a Drag!A new event proved a real wow with ‘glamorous girls’ pledging nearly £4,000. Our special thanks to everyone who took part. The good will and fun on the day was exceptional and our thanks to all especially to Nuneaton Town Football Club for hosting the event.

The Woofs needed Wellies on our first ever sponsored Dog Walk. It was the wettest, windiest, coldest Sunday in March but the stalwart owners dragged their pooches out all in aid of a good cause and pledged £1,884.

The Group Parachute Day in May also suffered because of the weather and the brave ‘skydivers’ could only watch the sky as the cloud base got lower and lower and the sun did not even peek out from behind the clouds! However, all the jumpers have rearranged and will get to jump out of a plane in the near future.

Jaguar Employees General Charities Fund supports the Hospice in a variety of ways. Every Hospice Golden Bond runner in the London Marathon is funded by Jaguar and hence ALL the monies raised by the runners is used to provide Hospice care.

Also, the Secondary Schools Enterprise project is sponsored by Jaguar, an event which raises thousands of pounds from an entrepreneurial project investment of £250

Jaguar Employees also gave their time to clean the new Hospice Bookshop in Coleshill. The Team got dirty and had great fun in the process.

Hinckley & Rugby Building Society has joined forces with the Hospice movement in Leicestershire & Warwickshire to create a very special savings account. One ‘Saver’ said “This account is great because I can give a little bit back to help others whilst my money is still growing.”

Denise Bradshaw Manager said “Each year on 1st December 1% of the average balances held in the account during the previous year will be donated to local Hospice care. I am pleased to say we donated £2,335 to the Mary Ann Evans Hospice to help this much needed facility in North Warwickshire. Evans Hospice is an invaluable group of supporters who work alongside the fundraising team to help us achieve the charitable funds that need to be raised every year.

Anyone can become a ‘friend’. There are many ways in which you can represent the Hospice in your community. By inviting you to become a ‘friend’ we are asking you to give time, as little or as much as you wish. No experience is necessary as training will be given which could also enhance your future career prospects.
