University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration Study: Restoring Social Bonds in Survivors of Torture and Severe Violence

In collaboration with the Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) in Jordan, this multi-phase, mixed methods study explores the impact of war and exile on social relationships and the role of social connection in rehabilitation from conflict and develops measures to assess these phenomena among Syrian refugees living in Jordan. Develop study protocol, IRB proposal, and interview guide. Conduct more than 45 in-depth interviews with Syrian refugees in Jordan and psychosocial service providers. Manage a team of research assistants based in Jordan and lead data analysis and measurement pilot testing process.

San Diego State University, School of Social Work Study: Investigating the Effects of Torture on Survivors in Thailand

In collaboration with human rights organization in Thailand, collaborate with the PI to document and investigate the long-term consequences of torture and detention for survivors in Thailand. This includes qualitative and quantitative analyses to identify psychological and functional consequences of torture experiences and identify culturally-specific idioms of distress.

Study: Understanding Perceptions of Mental Health and Treatment Engagement and Participation among Asian American Immigrant Communities

Collaborate with the PI on a qualitative research study focused on culturally-specific definitions of mental health and access and engagement in mental health services among Asian immigrant and refugee communities. Work with the research team to develop a qualitative code book, code focus group data, develop survey items and analyze data. Additional responsibilities include extension review of the literature and development of clinical case vignettes.

The course utilizes feminist perspectives of trauma, concepts of historical trauma, indigenous perspectives on illness and health and resilience and posttraumatic growth and examine their usefulness in framing and informing global mental health practice issues and intervention approaches.

Spring, 2017 Course Mentor University of Chicago, Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy Course: Capstone course • This is a graduate-level, final course for students in the Graduate

Program for Health Administration and Policy (GPHAP) program focused on developing team-based solutions to complex global health issues. In this role, I provided five weeks of mentorship and technical expertise to a team of final year social work, policy, and medical students who were researching mental health needs of Syrian refugees in Jordan.
