Mary Ellen Sillcox, Editor November, 2016 On the evening of October 15, 2016, members and friends celebrated the 75 th Anniversary of the Greater Norristown Art League (1941-2016). The GNAL Diamond Jubilee Dinner Dance was held at the neighboring Norristown Cedar Club. After an hour of hors d’oeuvres, wine and cordial conversation, welcoming remarks were delivered by Marlene Serafine Gaudio- chairperson, and Arnold Winkler-president. A convocation by Glenn Haig was followed by a splendid dinner buffet served by John Davis Catering. The open wine bar was tended by Jessica Polsky. Esteemed members Jim McFarlane and Jim Brotzman could not be pre- sent, but offered their fondest GNAL memories via letters, read by Martin Wigg. Guest speakers were Stan Huskey, editor of The Times Herald and Kass Freeman, noted watercolorist. Stan offered congratulations for GNAL’s ongoing accomplishments and stressed the importance of art in our schools and communities. Kass’ inspir- ing message encouraged confident re- sponses to authentic creative urgings. Songstress JoAnne DeSimone, enter- tained with pop music from the 1940s to the present, and stirred many guests to the dance floor. Genial Arnold Winkler sere- naded with his rendi- tion of “Edelweiss”. The lovely door prizes were donated by GNAL and Kiwanis- Norriton Circle mem- bers. Gratitude and kudos to the talented Dinner Dance Com- mittee: Fran Barone, for her invaluable assistance, especially with the task of reservations; Mary Ellen Sillcox, for creating a wonderful slide show of archived photographs which were continuously projected on the stage; Ria Hyer, for designing the layout of the keepsake program; Jo Ann Cooksey-Bono, for securing the guest speakers; Jessie Mallory, for keenly assisting with the décor (special thanks to one of GNAL’s original members, Bill Bourne, chiefly responsible for the 9 foot novelty paint brushes); Phil and Carol Salter, for procuring and delivering the wines, which were generously donated by GNAL. After months of planning, preparation and collaboration for this very special occasion, it was person- ally gratifying to witness the merriment and camaraderie among members and guests, professional and amateur artists, past and present officers and board members, students and instructors…all GNAL enthusiasts! Thank you and congratulations to GNAL's "Art Night" artists who participated for the fourth year in this annual event, hosted by Mar-riott SpringHill Suites in Plymouth Meeting--Francesca Barone, Photography; Indira Cariappa, Graphics/Watercolor; Susan Klinger, Watercolor/Pastels; Jack Lloyd, Acrylics; Jill Hassall Rees, Watercolor; Alla Reznik, Oil; and Judy Stevens, Pastels. SpringHill Suites nationwide host this “Evening of Inspiration” as an annual signature customer event to celebrate the hotel’s element of style through art and design and to build local awareness. In addition to the outstanding artwork, artists and guests enjoyed wine and catering provided by Phil's Tavern of Blue Bell. Although the hotel provided all the necessary details for setup and a reception,

the effort by our artists in exhibiting an exceptional quality of artwork for this event and remaining for its duration made it a success. Their professionalism was repre-sentative of the high standards of our art organization, and the Marriott staff and guests were again greatly impressed with this year's artists and fine artwork that GNAL continues to provide for "Art Night." Carol Salter

On Tuesday, October 11, GNAL welcomed Julie Gannaway from the Wharton Esherick museum. Despite a minor computer glitch affecting the slide show, the meeting was very informative! Julie is the Director of Business and Development at the museum and is quite knowledge-able about the life of this amazing and prolific sculptor. Esherick, a Philadelphia native, started out as a painter but began a career in woodworking after making and carving his own frames for his art-work. He was influenced by a number of craftsmen, and applied art-istry to woodworking thus creating beautiful and unusual furniture. He was dubbed “Dean of the American Craft.” The museum was Esh-erick’s home (which he designed), is a National Historic Landmark for Architecture, and is listed on Historic Artists’ Homes & Studios. We are very fortunate to have the museum so close by to enjoy!

Opportunity to show your work at John James Audubon in Mill Grove

Page 5

The museum house at Mill Grove has been under renovation for an extended period of time. We are expecting to have a soft opening during the Sapsucker Festival of 2017. New changes to the museum include the opening of a previously walled over door, new exhibits on the first floor, a reference library, interpretation of the murals in the drawing room and TWO updated and improved changing galleries. We are looking for interested artists to display their work within the new galleries.

The plan is to have at least one artist, perhaps two, for each changing gallery time period. We are planning on three, three-and-a-half month rotations of art with a reception at each opening. Artwork would be for sale with the potential of having smaller pieces of the entrant’s work for sale within the gift shop. Advertising the art gallery will be at the front of the site and also online. Bird and nature art is the requirement as that is our focus here at Audubon. If interested, please email Stephanie Britten at [email protected] with contact information, online portfolio link or images of your work.
