Parish Mission StatementParish Mission StatementParish Mission StatementParish Mission Statement
“What then is a parish? It is the smallest section of the one universal flock which has been entrusted to Peter by the Lord.
Under the authority of a responsible priest who has received the care of souls from his
bishop, the parish is, within the Church of Jesus Christ, the first community of Christian life; it is a
community cut to human dimensions, in which the shepherd can know his flock and the flock can know
their shepherd … At the heart of this area, we find the parish church with its bell-tower, its baptistery, its
confessional, its altar and tabernacle, a symbol of unity and the centre of community life.”

We are invited by Christ Himself to make prayer of petition boldly: “Whatever you ask in My name I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son; if you ask anything in My name I will do it.” (John 14:13-14)
In our prayers of petition to God then we have to have the ease with Him to ask for what seems best to us in any given situation. Of course we have to ask with some humility. We don’t see what God sees so how can we be sure exactly how things should play out in earthly human situations? We do well to remember St. Therese’s ironical observation: There are more tears shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones.
I think an important element to our prayer ought to be the repeating of acts of faith in the Divine Goodness, as a rebuke to our doubt and our fear. When we pray for something, and things don’t see to be going at all well, there is often a temptation to fall away from prayer—It’s no use! God’s not listening! Far better is to keep on praying, asking for light and courage, and affirming over and over our faith in God’s goodness, of which we have received already abundant proofs.

CONFIDENCE
IN PRAYER
PPPPrayer of petition is very much in the forefront of these liturgical days. The three Rogation days leading up to Ascension Thursday
directly appeal to God’s goodness in time of trial. The Collect prayer of the Rogation Mass (1962 Missal) addresses God thus:
Grant us, we pray, almighty God, that we, who in our affliction trust in Your goodness, may be always defended by Your protection against all adversities: through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
In the Collect of the Vigil of the Ascension (which is also the Collect for the Fifth Sunday after Easter, 1962 Missal) we likewise make appeal to God’s goodness:
O God, from whom all good things proceed, be generous to Your petitioners; so that by Your inspiration we may think what is right and by Your guidance may perform it: through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

ST. LUKE CHAPTER 19:11-27
The parable of the ten gold coins takes place at the banquet at Zacchaeus' house in Jericho (cf. 19:1-10). St. Luke introduces the parable with this contextual description: "While they were listening to Him [Jesus] speak, He pro-ceeded to tell a parable because He was near
Jerusalem and they thought that the kingdom of God would appear there immediately” (v. 11). We know from several previous passages that Jesus is approaching Jerusalem for His Passion, but that the disciples utterly fail to comprehend this (cf. 9:22, 31, 43-45, 51; 18:31-34). St. Luke's introduction to this parable reiterates the fact that the disciples are not expecting the Passion. Instead, they are anticipating a glorious restoration of Israel, i.e., a definitive religious-political victory. Jesus' parable help to correct this misunderstanding, especially in view of His later return as Judge, as a few of the Fathers indicate in their commentary on this passage. Jesus introduces the parable in vv. 12-13: "A nobleman went off to a distant country to obtain the kingship for himself and then to return. He called ten of his servants and gave them ten gold coins and told them, 'Engage in trade with these until I return.'" Unfortunately, the majority of the populace rejects the man's rule over them (v. 14). As St. Cyril indicates in his commentary, this detail foreshadows the Jerusalem populace's imminent rejection of and resistance to Jesus, their Messiah. When the nobleman returns, He summons his servants for an account of their stewardship (v. 15). The first and second servants report substantial increases in the assets, for which the master rewards them with stewardship over several cities (vv. 16-19). The third servant, however, confesses to hiding the money in the ground and doing nothing with it out of fear (vv. 20-21).
SCRIPTURE STUDY After hearing this confession, the master is inflamed with wrath, and issues the following condemnations in vv. 22-27, first of the servant, and then of the rebellious people: "'With your own words I shall condemn you, you wicked servant. You knew I was a demanding person, taking up what I did not lay down and harvesting what I did not plant; why did you not put my money in a bank? Then on my return I would have collected it with interest.' And to those standing by he said, 'Take the gold coin from him and give it to the servant who has ten.' But they said to him, 'Sir, he has ten gold coins.' 'I tell you, to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. Now as for those enemies of mine who did not want me as their king, bring them here and slay them before me.'" To understand properly the severity of the master's judgment, we need to consider what an honor it was for the master to have entrusted his gold to his servants, and thus, what an insult it was for the disobedient servant to have failed in carrying out his master's orders. In view of the Last Judgment, we do well to consider the magnitude of the gifts God has given us, both temporal and spiritual, as several of the Fathers again note in their commentary on this passage. The most precious gift we have, of course, is Jesus Himself in the Holy Eucharist. God forbid that we appear before His dread judgment seat with little or no fruit to show Him, after having been given all the sufficient graces needed for salvation. Like the good servants, let us cultivate obedience to God and be honorable stewards of the beloved parish He has given us.

LATIN MASS PROPERS: SUNDAY AFTER ASCENSION
INTROIT: Psalm 26: 7, 8, 9 Hear, O Lord, my voice with which I have cried to Thee, alleluia; my heart hath said to Thee, I have sought Thy face, Thy face, O Lord, I will seek: turn not away Thy face from me, alleluia, alleluia. Psalm 26: 1 The Lord is my light and my salvation: whom shall I fear? V. Glory be to the Father.
COLLECT Almighty and eternal God, grant us ever to have a will devoted to Thee, and with a sincere heart to serve Thy majesty. Through our Lord.
EPISTLE: 1 Peter 4: 7-11 Dearly beloved, be prudent and watch in prayers. But before all things have a constant mutual charity among yourselves: for charity covereth a multitude of sins. Using hospitality one towards another, without murmuring: as every man hath received grace, ministering the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak, as the words of God: if any minister, let him do it, as of the power which God administereth: that in all things God may be honoured through Jesus Christ our Lord.
FIRST ALLELUIA: Psalm 46: 9 Alleluia, alleluia V. The Lord hath reigned over all the nations; God sitteth on His holy throne. SECOND ALLELUIA: John 14: 18 Alleluia. V. I will not leave you orphans: I go away, and I come unto you, and your heart shall rejoice. Alleluia.
GOSPEL: John 15: 26-27; 16: 1-4 AAAAt that time, Jesus said to His disciples: When the Paraclete cometh, whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceedeth from the Father, He shall give testimony of Me: and you shall give testimony, because you are with Me from the beginning. These things have I spoken to you, that you may not be scandalized. They will put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doth a service to God. And these things will they do to you, because they have not known the Father, nor Me. But these things I have told you, that when the hour shall come, you may remember that I told you of them.
OFFERTORY: Psalm 46: 6 God is ascended with jubilee, and the Lord with the sound of a trumpet, alleluia.
SECRET May this spotless sacrifice cleanse us, O Lord, and instill into our souls the strength of Thy heavenly grace. Through our Lord.
Preface of the Ascension
COMMUNION: John 17: 12-13, 15 Father, while I was with them, I kept them whom Thou gavest Me, alleluia; but now I come to Thee: I pray not that Thou shouldst take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldst keep them from evil, alleluia, alleluia.
POSTCOMMUNION Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord, that being replenished with holy gifts, we may ever remain in thanksgiving. Through our Lord.
